I'm looking at the responsible older dudes around here: ToxicAdam, Wobe et al.
I just got a dick up my butt for plumbing fixes that HAD I KNOWN WHAT THE FUCK IT WAS I coulda done myself. Anyone of you have a book to recommend or a few tips? I see a leaky pipe or a busted faucet and I shit my drawers. This has to stop!

well, I had a gasket rot in the hot water valve behind the washing machine. All I knew was water was spraying every where from some source between the valve and the hose. I tried caulking it, but that just made the water come out of the valve.
The plumber dude just eyeballed and knew EXACTLY what to do. I couldn't tell the water was coming from the valve itself; it was all over the place! A new gasket and a few turns of the ol' crescent wrench later, and I was out $388 for "the house call". (What the fuck other kinds of plumbing calls ARE THERE??? I asked but since I signed the papers in advance I was fucked.)

Find the control for that valve and shut it off. The first thing you would need to do is obviously replace the gasket. Easy right there. There are even instructions on the box. lolz. Just take your old one and get the same size and gauge. Then, you need to turn the valve back on and see if water is still coming out. If it is, then the pressure busted a pipe or loosened the joint. It should be controlled enough at this point to see where it's coming from. If it's a joint, try to tighten it. That should work. If it's a pipe, swap it out for another.
Plumbing is really a lot of common sense unless your bust something below your floor or in your walls.

Thanks for the advice!! That said, I think I freak out too quickly and assume it *is* coming from behind the floor/walls. I'll follow that procedure if this happens again.

No prob. If you think it's coming from the floor or walls, an easy thing to do is throw a rag over the the pipe/valve and you'll be able to easily see which direction the water is coming from.

you can also shoot me and get straight to a plumber for free. My dad has worked as a plumber for the past 30 years. And like Mupepe said its all common sense. Except when it comes to electronics and plumbing. But if its leaky faucets, busted pipes, loose joints, and other shit its easy as hell to fix.
I'd suggest you get some basic tools if you dont already have some. Not many books that i'd know about. Just use your head dude.
I just had a backflow problem with my toilets and shower in my master, god was that a disaster. But i knew it was easy to fix. Rented a snake got some soft salt and a few minutes later i fixed the backflow. The hardest part was turning off the water and undoing the pipe to remove excess air from the line.
