Title: I am about to watch The Crow
Post by: TVC15 on November 14, 2008, 12:55:17 AM
Thanks to Netflix I can fill the gaps in my shit cinema knowledge base.  What the fuck am I in for here?  Is this better or worse than The Craft?  I had to eat a whole box of NyQuil pills and drink like a half bottle of Johnnie to get through that shit without picking out my eyes with my toenail clippers, little clip by little clip.

EDIT:  OOoooo, Winston!

Well, Jandek wins on any scale.  Since they both aren't talented at music or brevity or lyrics, Jandek wins simply because he has like 10 times as much material.

Why must every thread here turn into a discussion about Jandek?  We all know he's one of the masters.

Read about him, PD:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jandek

Actually, this site is better:  http://tisue.net/jandek/discussion.html

Isn't there a rape scene?  That should be enough to make it somewhat enjoyable for you.

the movie is crap.  seriously.  It's not even fun in a shitty way.  I can at least appreciate The Craft in that manner.  It's pretentiously bad

It wasn't a very explicit rape scene.  I'd probably give it a D or maybe a C-.

Mupepe, you only liked The Craft because you wanted to fuck those slutty whore witches.

the rape scene is definitely subpar.  i couldn't even tug it to the rape scene as a teenager.

What makes a rape scene B or A worthy?  I'm curious about your grading rubric for rape.

There wasn't a bare booby in sight, even.

What about Straw Dogs?

A good rape scene should show titties in a torn shirt/blouse.  panties stretched aside to allow penetration.  sweaty grunting from a manbeast.  some blood if appropriate, perhaps from a bop on the nose.  and crying of course

Straw Dogs is a great one.  genre defining, even.  Irreversible, too.  I'd say A Clockwork Orange gets a B for being suitably intense.  Basically, to be a quality rape scene, it has to make you actually feel some sort of pity for the woman.  The Crow fails at that.  Go ahead, rape her.  I don't even care.  It's not about the nudity or penetration as much as it is about palpable emotion.

Also, Straw Dogs gets bonus points because it throws the curve ball of the chick actually enjoying the rape.  Most people think the Japanese invented that flavor of rape plot twist, but no, not at all.  Straw Dogs did it first by a long shot.

yeah, if yer gonna have a transgressive scene, make it actually transgressive, not just quick-cut pseudo-porn

otherwise why film it and try to call it legitimate cinema

The Girl Next Door has a very brief but rather effective rape scene.  It was like a 12-14 year old raping a 16 year old girl tied to a mattress as a bunch of other kids and an older woman watched.  It would have been more effective if child actors didn't suck dick.  Afterward, the woman even insulted the girl and implied she had all sorts of STDs.  It's pretty awesome.

are there any legitimately good child actors?

yeah, i really couldn't stand the scene in irreversible -- i had to leave the room. rape, when filmed with any emotion, is hard as hell to watch. i really don't like it in the movies i watch, but i'll endure it if it has a point.

You see, Mupepe, this is why I'm decent with the chicks.  I know chicks aren't into the boobies and the perverted exaggerated thrusting and the bodily fluids.  Chicks care about emotions and feelings and shit, and maybe a little about the sexy rape moaning and grunting.  You need to take a few plays out of my book.

Now paintings, gash and boobies are appreciated equally by all genders there.

The Hills Have Eyes remake has a rape scene that was pretty horrifying when I watched it the first time. Deformed mutants deflowering a teenage girl is disturbing no matter what kind of mettle you're made of.

I actually totally forgot about this.  And it was made even worse by the fact that it was Claire from Lost.  That part made me cringe.

And irreversible's rape scene is probably the only one i've ever seen that has actually made me feel bad.

I've never seen it.

I wonder what happened to the footage of Brandon Lee's death.

You know, I like this movie.  It's kinda mediocre, but it has its charms.  Watching it, it really is a bummer about Brandon Lee.  He's really the best part of the movie, and the way he carries himself and moves is rather impressive in a way I can't quite describe.

Yeah, if I saw this when I was 13, I'd probably think it was the most awesome thing ever.  Seeing it today, I think it's pretty decent.

for some reason that made me laugh.  :lol

I saw this in the theater, it's a fun movie.  The only shame is that it should have been better, you could really tell some scenes were incomplete or changed because of Lee's death.  I'd be interested to see how the special effects hold up, but I have fond memories of this flick.

The fact that it was immediately compared to The Craft makes me sad.  It must be the fact that Sting (the wrestler) took the Crow gimmick and ran it into the ground.  When The Crow burst onto the scene, it was a pretty striking look (think The Matrix when that launched.)  Sting (the wrestler) and Scary Movie (the ghost mask) kind of diluted the stark look that The Crow was known for.  He really looked like an angel of death, and his revenge story worked into that image.

Also, the 15 direct-to-video sequels diluted the original movie as well.  If you like grunge, The Crow had one of the best soundtracks of the 90s.  That STP song was overplayed but is one of their catchiest tunes.
