It looks okay, but it plays like an XBox game. Actually, it sort of looks like one, too. I only logged about 90 minutes so far, but I've never felt so compelled to play an evil character. I just wanna smash everyone under my boots. Tell me this gets better.

Fallout 3 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Fable 2 BUT, Fable 2 makes good on many promises made before Fable 1, so kudos for that. I like Fable 2, and ill put more time into it eventually, but its not super compelling

I liked Fable 2, but it was a failure as an RPG and unless you played it as a life sim, it got boring fast. There was no reward to anything you did. Just watch the Zero Punctuation review for the most honest review of this game.
and yeah, Fallout 3 is so much better than Fable 2. Fallout 3 is the best western RPG since the Witcher, and if you exclude PC games from the list, then maybe the best western rpg on consoles in forever if not a much longer period of time with less hyperbole attached to it.

All I wanted from Fable 2 was another distinctly European-looking dark fairytale, but with a better (stronger) story than the first. What I get is a game with more incredible little pointless things smothering a core story that may or may not be good. I can understand why people with a lot of time to spare and with a passion for doing random things would love this, but it's pretty obviously not for me these days.

Fallout 3 and Fable 2 aren't even in the same class. That's like going, "Which is the finer film? 8 1/2 or Under Siege?". One is a master piece, the other is a fuckin' goofy maybe fun waste of time.

Same here. After Fallout 3 Fable 2 feels shallow in a lot of things. I played it till the end and put around 30 hours into it but the longer I played it the more abstract all this fluffy stuff appeared to me. Buying houses ended up being little more than clicking a sign. The combat is great, except for the way they make you use magic, making it difficult to freely use your full potential and variety of magic capabilities. The story was decent and it had some genuinly interesting dilemma, usually causing an effect on the appearance of your character, which was neat.
The limited/gimped map functionality blocked you from getting a cohesive mental image of the entire world.
Anyway, it was all a bit too 'simple' for me. I'm more into Bethesda's RPGs like Oblivion and Fallout 3, or something like Mass Effect.
I was satisfied, I didn't hate it but I wasn't wild either and didn't see myself ever coming back to it so I sold it. I do think it can be a good game for people not accustomed to RPGs or games in general, it's very easy and straightforward and has lots of neat stuff to dazzle the inexperienced gamer. A gateway RPG if you will.

It's pretty boring but the orbs are such a cool idea. I like how you can get all the achievements by just leeching off someone else too. I threw it on eBay and got $40 for it.

I also traded it in for Fallout 3, which is a real rpg. Fable II is too arcadey, but I kept my save and I'll finish it one of these days.

I'm staying away from Fallout 3 until I'm done in Fable. I do like all the little things you can do, and the side quest where you have to sacrifice your wife is awesome. But the main story is garbage (I've started skipping the conversations) and the combat is pretty shallow.
I love the atmosphere though and the dog is great. I sort of like that you can murder a bunch of people and then do a dance so they like you again, it lets you play around with the world more than if it had dire consequences. Still a great game but I'm not going to risk having it ruined by playing the superior Fallout 3 more.

I don't get the hype. As an RPG, it's just bad-- the combat is too simple and unbalanced and the game's dungeons are roughly 30 seconds long each, and as a sim it's even worse.
Butttt the side quests were nice and the game has a certain charm to it.
But it's not a great RPG and I just don't get it.

I'm impressed with fallout's general balance given beth's challenge in oblivion, so I think increasing the leveling bands might have been the solution they needed.

yeah, that was the main spell I used. Combat broke down to "hold melee, point to next guy, hold melee" and every once in a while mash Y to use my uzi pistol or press B to knock enemies away.

It's not. Fable 2 is definitely fun, but a fun rental. It doesn't have a lot of longevity and outside of the fun and sick life sim elements, almost everything about it is poor to mediocre. It excels at virtually nothing.

I started playing this and it's been a long time since I flip flopped on a game so fast like I did with Fable II. At first I thought the game was pretty awesome: exploring the world was very enjoyable and there was just a fuckton to do quest wise. It felt like a Zelda somehow. But the more I played it, the more I realized how much pointless shit there is in the game. The expressions are useless and just no fun once you messed around with them for a bit. The morality stuff has no weight to it.
Just an example: I was doing a quest and I forgot to dismiss my wife so she tagged along. Suddenly 'your wife is dead and your kid has been put into a home' pops up. I just didn't care. You can marry anyone, there's no characterization so it's hard to actually care for your family. Seeing hearts above every npc in the game ultimately means jack shit in the game. They're all empty shells that you can please or piss off by farting in their face. What's the point, it's no fun.
I haven't finished it yet, but the way I see it Fable II is a decent at best action/adventure with a fuckton of useless morality bullshit tacked on to it. It just never turns out well when games try to do it. Or I just need to play Fallout 3, maybe it's better there.

Fable II is an absolute masterpiece. I was going to make this an epic post breaking down why but I need to rub one out before class so there's not enough time.

I had this argument over at GAF and I was partially wrong-- there are a few encounters/decisions that do have long term implications...but most of them are cosmetic and the sim stuff is so broken that it doesn't matter. But some people LIKE that the world is malleable to the point where the consequences of choice don't matter.
I tried describing the game as "zelda-like" to duckroll but I remembered it's missing ALL of the dungeon-crawling puzzle-solving goodness of Zelda. I'm not really sure WHAT fable is like. It honestly is a cross between the Sims and like My First Dungeon Crawler.

yeah the dungeons are terrible... I think it gives off that vibe because of the overworld.
long term implications: aside from the choices you make in your childhood (person you give the warrants to, destroy the stock or not) I haven't seen anything significant. Note that I'm probably not that far into the game, I need to get on a boat now with Hammer.
Maybe I should've gone all out evil. Could be that's more fun. Now I'm a saint with an aureola above his head

Masterpiece? Look, it's fun and cute. But the combat is shallow, the BIG MORAL CHOICES hold no consequence and it's padded with about twenty tons of useless life-sim bullshit. This is a fun game, but in a season stuffed with genuine masterpieces and genre defining titles it just doesn't stand up.

I'm not really hating the game, though. Dunno why you group me with them. I played through and got all 1000. I just thought it got a bit boring, and the ending was just "what". I already mentioned that I think the orbs are a great idea, and I loved how you could piggyback achievements. I did NOT like how you HAD to buy Pub Games to get "Completionist" achievement, but this is resolved by piggybacking off someone.

I'm not "hating" on it either. I just don't think it's a 10, and I certainly don't think the best things about it are achievement piggybacking.
It is a solid adventure game with some interesting quests and some fun characters.

I'm still interested in finishing it but the game won't let me. Every time I load up my save the game freezes at the load screen. I'm probably screwed since I got a DRE while the game was loading/saving. Goddamn constant DRE's, good thing NXE is out tomorrow.
