But it's not beating when it's just a sort of hard push.  Rough tapping is probably the right word.

i'm guessing the answer ot the first question is ''yes''

Oh yeah you can hug guys as much as you want, and strangely you can walk with your male friend holding hands and people won't think it's weird :lol

something worth noting, there are five prayers a day. dawn, noon, afternoon, dusk, and evening.

during those times all stores and shops closes as a way to prompt people to perform them and allow the shop keepers to do so too.

But it's not like prayer is long.

How long are the prayers in Saudi Arabia?

Yes, both male and female "should" be virgins around marriage. I know it seems hard, but that's why people encourage marriage at an early age. (a couple of guys from my highschool got married during second year)

It's one of the very few things I disagree with in Islam.

A lot of comes from culture more so than the actual religion though. What the religion teaches is totally different from what some people do, and I just try to ignore what they do. Like the people who split up prayer rooms in mosque's by sex. I just don't get that. But when you read about Muhammad, women and men prayed side by side.

Jinfash where did these cultural things start to emerge? Where did they go from every one praying together to separating by sex, or is the separation by sex thing just an American Muslim thing?

I'm almost sure though that men and women shouldn't mix together while praying, first lines go to the men then followed by women only to prevent men from staring at the women's asses when bending

I just think this is wrong. Have more self restraint;etc.

A good amount of the stories I read make it seem like these dudes don't appreciate the beauty of the female body or the beauty of sex period. You can appreciate without being a perverted freak.

There's nothing wrong with being aroused. That's natural. Some of these dudes take that too far and act like being aroused itself is a sin. Lighten up.

Title: Re: Jinfash: tell me about being a muslim and living in Saudi Arabia

I know what you do in Saudi Arabia doesn't represent all of Islam, but a lot of the culture that has come from immigrant Muslims has carried over to Muslim life over here in the states. So when I go to a mosque I find it incredibly insensitive that women must pray in a separate room - often in considerably worse shape - just because some dude is scared of getting a woody.

But like I said, these issues related to sex seem to be more cultural than having any relation to the religion itself which some have actually seen to be as if it is tied to the religion.

When I read about Muhammad I'm like,"That's how you do it."

As I read through the Qur'an I've just had a totally different interpretation than some others, which from what I know, is good because you're supposed to have your own interpretations and not rely on anyone else.

Have you read about the American Muslim women? At mosques they often have to deal with being put in the attic for their praying, with no place to put their children so they often pray in uncomfortable areas full of crying and doo doo slingin'. It's just not right.

Ijtihad is strong.

You'd be surprised if I told you my personal theory. I think what most of these teachings do is force you to get aroused by anything femininely related, they want you to be like that and to them that's the norm. They consider others who don't "enjoy" this trait to be desensitized less of men, but that's just my view.

I feel that isolation only brews curiosity, curiosity brews things people wouldn't normally do if they were already viewed as socially acceptable.

in iran, to my understanding, this is quite common.  transsexuals, rather than transvestism and it's socially acceptable.

In Iran, women can drive.  My Iranian-raised friends say that fornication and abortion is also allowed.  It's a male-dominated society still though with the scarf law sporadically enforced and the unfair divorce laws.
So Muhammad squeezed out a salty tear while stoning a woman. What a softie.
Jesus > Mohammed
bored atheist thoughts on divinity:
spoiler (click to show/hide)
I think the point of the story is that he was a humanitarian compared to back then.  Mohammad also at least made up an entire book so you have to give him the creative edge.  What did Jesus do directly for to society?  It's interesting that pretty much the entire religion was made 300 years later by Constantine and the Council of Nicaea.  There's very little christian dogma from christ so you have to consider in a divinity show-off.

I've never read a hadith. Jinfash tell me what you think about this. I have only read the Qur'an.

Last night I read like 4 surahs
Title: Re: Jinfash: tell me about being a muslim and living in Saudi Arabia
Post by: Himu on November 17, 2008, 12:19:46 PM
I like the first half of the Qur'an and the last third. They're so damn different. But my favorite parts of the Qur'an are the retellings of the things you read about in the bible and the torah, because I prefer the way the Qur'an tells the stories more, even if my translation kinda blows.

I read stuff like the surah on Joseph (a favorite of mine), Abraham, Hud, The Rock (as it is called in my translation), and I did the beginning of The Honey Bee. Quite honestly, I love the middle part of the Qur'an.

I want a new Qur'an. I have two Qurans and I'm not satisfied with either translation.

Jinfash: he says this because I wish to convert. He thinks I should study more uh spiritual things and not use a religion. He's an atheist though.

On the issue of polygamy, I disagree with it heavily but I can see why it was useful back in Muhammad's time. The husband was a provider for women who had been left without a protector.

I'm with them.  This is very informative.

So you were born in Texas, would you ever consider moving back to the states?

Also, is alcohol completely illegal there or is just that muslims can't drink?

I don't think I'll ever move back permanently, not with the crappy economy and lack of jobs :P

I'm not sure how much this applies to the medical field, but in the U.S. right now being educated + able to speak arabic and English = $$$$.  For a doctor, that probably applies more to Europe than the U.S. though.  In the U.S. you could probably get an amazing job with the U.S. Army.  But as we all know, that's a trap!  If you do decide to move back to the U.S., please be my sugar daddy.  :-*

Quote
and as for alcohol, in Saudi Arabia it's illegal to drink it in public places period. If you're a foreigner though, you can drink in your own place or your compound, in fact most of your country's rules can be applied in those places as they try to make you as comfortable as they can.

It's worth noting that Alcohol is legal in some neighboring countries like Bahrain and the UAE, so most of the people go there to get drunk if they feel like it (Bahrain is like 20 mins away from where I live).

In that case, do people commonly go over the border to get drunk on weekends?  Bar culture is such an integral part to European and American young adult lives, it's hard to imagine a place where life doesn't revolve around that.

Regarding the 72 virgins thing: Shias don't believe it and I'm pretty sure that most Sunnis question it.  The number 72 was used in old Arabic as a figure of speech for a "a shitload".

Jinfash, my Iranian relatives say that x-parties are big over there.  What do Saudi kids do for fun?

I'm supposed to have a 10 page paper on Islam done by tomorrow, so I just started a couple minutes ago and am reading up on it.  It's almost scary how much lines up with how I live my life.  I'm starting to think that my parents had subliminal cues around the house that made me act like this so I would be muslim or something without being direct with it.

C'mon, they had you at 72 virgins. Seventy fucking 2.

Who the fuck would want to have sex with virgins? Having sex with virgins is AWFUL.

Weird, the chick that dated you said the same thing...

That doesn't even exist and is a myth. Who the fuck would want to have sex with virgins? Having sex with virgins is AWFUL.
what

no no no no

you dont understand

sex with a virgin, as long as 1. the virgin is hot, and 2. you don't really give a shit about the virgin beyond sex, is an expereince beyond few others.  It is the mindblowing pleasure of contaminating that which is pure.  It is the manner of penetrating that which is adolescent.  It is the FEELING of impregnating that which is vulnerable, and feminine.  It is the ecstaasy of SHEER JOY OF SEX for the male at the explicit expense and pain  of the lady - a pain that is oh so deliciously visible and prominent - all the while without raping.

Man I wish i was a muslim.  Atheism suxxxxx :piss2

Serious question my fellow A-rab: what's with the shooting guns in the air on every manifestation. Don't you waste too much ammo that way?

Yeah it is, and it's stupid.
I don't know why they do it, prolly to show their courage or something. It's a tradition mostly done by Arabic nomads (Bedwins), and leads to accidents:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yako9oo-0Wk

:lol

smh

holy shit.

I've heard of weddings being abruptly terminated when a falling bullet hits someone in the party. Or in the village down the road. What goes up must come down. Only a grade A douche would fire live ammo like that.

mythbusters did a test and found out that when a bullet is coming straight down after being shot up, it has too little mass to hit with lethal force.  it's still a stupid way to have fun as that video shows.

It's a number of things, really.  Keep in mind that I am Persian and my parents are Muslim (both are from Iran), it's just that they never pushed religion on me.  In fact, I went to a Christian church for preschool where they all thought I was Jewish because I didn't know if I was Christian or not.  The most direct influence of Islam my parents had one me was no pork in my house, and even today I don't eat pork because I never got the taste for it.

At least in my experience there are two tells of being Persian (don't know about Arabs):

1) Hairy
2) Wears and obnoxious amount of black

I honestly never understood that.  All the guys were wearing black suits with black shirts and black ties.

You're missing out! I was the same, also grew up in a Muslim household (I'm Moroccan) but my parents are hardly what you'd call strict muslims and the only implemented rule was no pork in the house. So I never ate it until I turned 16 and godamn that bacon in a fry up was heavenly!
