Heh, Wipeout was the reason I even owned a Playstation. I was godlike at Wip3out. I doubt my old fart self can claim any records with this one, but it's hot. Now if we could only get some remakes of courses from the first 3 games.

Wipeout HD custom soundtrack support is unmatched

And while not a solo effort, HD and the two PSP games made me switch from being someone who really liked Wipeout games while preferring F-Zero to the complete opposite.  Wipeout > F-Zero

If it's any help, I'm having trouble getting a handle on freaking Flash class right now. But hey, I'm handicapped. I thought it'd make me sick, but it actually makes the experience even crazier.  :hyper

I'm getting closer and closer to wanting a PS3; the team interviews I've seen with the Wipeout HD crew made me want to support them, and less than USD20 is a great price for the crazy stuff they appear to have put in.

Also, they basically poo-poo'd the idea of "user created content" (i.e. user created tracks) because they rightfully think the increase in horseshit-to-quality ratio would bottom out, considering they've "spent days working on getting a single curve to work how (they) want it."
Title: Re: Wipeout HD
Post by: duckman2000 on November 22, 2008, 12:23:18 AM
The price is the craziest thing. This is like a ton better than any full priced game released this year.

As for content, I'd be happy with some remakes from earlier games. There's so much to be collected there that I don't think they will ever need to design new tracks.

^ I actually have some Blu Mar Ten on my custom playlist (the song "Black Water", which I bought on a Beatport buying binge a while back). Duckman do you know of the Brookes Brothers? Their song F-Zero is the PERFECT song for this game, ironically.

Nope, where can that be listened to? Right now, my playlist is filled with BMT, EZ Rollers, some old Biosphere, early Lekebusch and the Xpander tune (Wip3out)

I don't mind the music, or at least not the earlier things; listening to new stuff, it all sounds like Reason sample template 1 through 15. I really don't like the terminology, though. Techno, trance, house, what was wrong with that trinity to warrant further distinctions?

i got to say though - i do love the game, but it doesn't offer anything new for wipeout nuts. It's simply the perfect execution that makes it so good - i do still want the REAL next Wipeout so if that's what he was getting at in the review then i can dig that.

It's still something we haven't had, you know. It's a beautiful, smooth running Wipeout and it's running on the PS3, as opposed to a PSP. As said, we haven't had a genuinely good Wipeout on a console since Wip3out, and I'm certain that Wipeout fans are the last ones to feel jilted.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
My opinion on the righteousness of this format is likely dependent on whether or not the inevitable DLC is reasonably priced

I am curious to see if they will make a real, new Wipeout for the PS3 in the future.  I remember that SOCOM was another Sony series that got it's 'classic' verison on the PS3 with Confrontation with a real full game coming in the future (whether it's MAG or not, I don't know), so maybe Wipeout will get the same treatment?  And I really want Twisted Metal Head-On HD.

I know we've heard different things on the development of the "real" Wipeout PS3, but it's been a while now since I heard anything new. Not sure if that's good or bad. But they obviously have a good base there now with WOHD, so they would really just have to focus on implementing features and porting tracks over, preferably from Wip3out. Of course, we don't know yet what the extent of DLC will be for WOHD, do we?

Maybe Sony has smartened up and isn't showing games 1 to 2+ years before release.
Title: Re: Wipeout HD
Post by: duckman2000 on November 24, 2008, 02:35:51 PM
Or, perhaps they are showing it right now, in "Prologue" form. Add a map pack of past efforts and maybe some new designer ones, a patch adding persistent online team alliances, and you'd have a full blown sequel. I don't see how they could or would even need to make it look better than it already does, so it will be all about adding features. Well, hopefully.
Title: Re: Wipeout HD
Post by: cool breeze on November 24, 2008, 02:47:57 PM
I don't know if that would be the best solution since Wipeout HD is really more Wipeout Pure HD.  The improvements found in Wipeout Pulse would be appreciated if they did make a 'new' Wipeout game.  I do think that graphically the game is pretty much everything I would want it to be at.

as gorgeous as wipeout hd is, its psp roots kind of show in the scale of the backdrops. they feel kind of dinky, though on some tracks they've added touches like air traffic. i think an original ps3 wipeout could look better, though maybe they'd have to drop the resolution

If there is one critical flaw of this game, it'd be that there is no way to set infinite laps in Time Trial. Or just a free ride option.

Speed Laps in Racebox  :duh
Title: Re: Wipeout HD
Post by: AdmiralViscen on November 24, 2008, 10:02:32 PM
Am I crazy or did the new patch make it so that when you play Speed Lap you are forced to do all 7 laps even if you get a Gold? I know it was like that on PSP, but I coulda sworn that when I first got Wipeout HD they would nix the challenge as soon as you clinched a gold time.
Title: Re: Wipeout HD

Post by: cool breeze on January 22, 2009, 01:39:23 AM
I actually got back to playing this.  I'm so bad at making U corners that I can't understand what I'm doing wrong.  I lean into it all the way, I do the turn, and maybe I need to balance my acceleration around 50 or so, but I can never get a smooth turn.

Playing it again also reminded me about how amazing the custom soundtrack support is for this game.  I hope more game in the future have as much care for custom soundtracks as Wipeout HD.  It's on such a whole other level than any game on any current console.  Last game that had custom soundtrack this important was NFL 2k5.
Title: Re: Wipeout HD
Post by: duckman2000 on January 22, 2009, 01:41:16 AM
Lean heavy on the airbrake, and cut the corners as tight as possible, but not so much that you lose momentum. Due to the speed and floating nature of the crafts, you have to basically make the whole turn right as you hit the beginning of it.

Adam Beyer's earlier stuff is more preferable, some good banging Swedish techno. His newer stuff is definitely much more minimal, like most techno nowadays. "China Girl" was huuuuuge in the mnml scene last year though.
Title: Re: Wipeout HD
Post by: duckman2000 on January 23, 2009, 01:15:29 AM
I used to love early Adam Beyer (particularly when teamed up with Lekebusch), but I'm not sure heavy techno would mesh well with the slick presentation of Wipeout. It's a trance game through and through.

Then again, I guess I just recommended Amon Tobin as part of the soundtrack.  Not techno, but damned heavy.

I played some Wipeout today and man, the sound design is amazing.  This is probably tied with MGS4 for best sound IMO.  The way they make the music/sound effects fade in and out depending on shields/explosions/etc... is AWESOME.  And the music is so good and basey.  I love playing Wipeout HD with the sound system way up.

Are they still going to do DLC expansions for this?

If we only have 4 or less people, maybe we'll just do a mini-tourney with like 4-6 tracks instead of a full 12 run.  If it goes well maybe we'll get more people next week and do a 12er.

Lobby will be made approximately 10 hours from now.

Alright, so I'll create a lobby in about an hour and if you can join in, jump in.  Will keep it open for 10 mins or so until 10pm PST and then just start with whoever is there.

I've never created a lobby in Wipeout HD so no idea on how inviting will work.  Hopefully I can setup a private room and just invite people.  I think I have most people here on my friendlist?  If I'm not on your list and you want to play add bebpojp I'll check my friend invites before I start the game.

Ok, room is up.  6 track tourney.  I don't see any way to invite people in-game so I guess you just have to join?

It is now 10pm PST and I am in a lobby all by myself.

If we can't even get a 4 player game going in the next 20 mins I'm hitting the failure button and calling it off.  :-\

I'm not sure.  I'm guessing if you have me on your friendlist and you hit join game you can search for friend lobbies?

PS3 owners are all flakes except duckman :(

I'm going to add some bots cause 1 on 1 kinda sucks if the skill level is far apart.

Yeah, EB dudes suck. My kid just started coughing, so I have to bail for a bit.

Oh yeah, and getting nothing but brutal weapons when you're in the lead, and nothing but shields when you're in second? Crash Team Racing flashbacks total.

Heh, I had to leave the game because of the kid, so hey. Probably for the best, Bepbo probably needed to scrape himself off the floor after the sound asskicking he got.  :japancry

we should re-attempt this at a more reasonable time frame, you know... when people are home.
