Ok, so this 24 nonsense is on at 8 and the Colbert Christmas special is on at 10.  I will watch this now, but if it continues to suck like the last season I'm mailing Bloodwake a box of poop.

Crow?  Bitch please.  This is merely adequate so far.  It's like S4 levels of OK.  Nothing to jizz over.

I will probably give it another shot on Mondays since Heroes got so bad in S2 that I didn't even bother with S3.

There were like 5 or 6 really good episodes in Season 6.  The problem is that four of them happened at the beginning of the season and the rest of it was pretty much like having to spend an hour in TVC's rape dumpster every week.

so, i made a secret prediction that most everyone would get all excited about this until they actually watched it and were disappointed to find out it's exactly like every other season of 24 past the first season

also, 24 has never been jingoistic about the us government, there have been varying levels of governmental corruption all the way back to season one

they made the president the main villain in season 5, for fuck's sake

Oh wow, who can possibly guess where this season is going?

-The First Son's gf is a sleeper/mole.
-Jack comes back to face justice (lol) until they figure out that OMG JACK IS THE ONLY ONE WHO CAN HELP US IN THIS PREDICAMENT!
-The explanation for Tony not being dead and being involved with the bad guys will be dumber than dirt.
-Chloe or Morris will get killed.
-Somebody else will get killed.
-Jack will partner up with the First Son at one point.
-Powers Boothe will be involved.

I bet I bat 100%.

Title: Re: 24: Redemption tonight
Post by: Boogie on November 23, 2008, 11:12:58 PM
I thought it was a damn good entry for 24.  A good self-contained story, but also setting up the new season.  It was predictable in parts (the end-deal of Jack answering the subpoena in return for the kids getting through), and hilariously absurd in parts (the over-the-top cowardice of the UN dude)

I'm not sure 24 is "back" (Triumph's list of predictions is probably going to be accurate.  And of course whatever explanation they come up with for Tony's return is going to be distinguished mentally-challenged), but I enjoyed tonight.

In fact, I almost think at this point a shorter timespan benefits 24.  Ditch the "one-day" aspect and just fit the "season" or "movie" to the story you're telling.

Ditch the "one-day" aspect

No.

Every.  Single.  Season.  has had issues with losing focus and steam sometime after the midseason mark.  Season 1?  Amnesia subplot.  The Drazens, however, made for an awesome plot B.

The second half of season 2 was far weaker than the first half.

Season 3, possibly less so.

Season 4 had Marwan's incredible plans B, C, D, E, etc.

And do I really need to say anything about season 6?
Title: Re: 24: Redemption tonight
Post by: fistfulofmetal on November 23, 2008, 11:41:35 PM
Don't care. Remove the real time and 24 hour aspect and it's not 24. Period.

If the ratings are as bad as Season 7: definitely.

This is season 7.

And the ratings the past 3 seasons have been pretty much the same. All of which are better than the first three seasons.
Title: Re: 24: Redemption tonight
Post by: littlemathletics on November 24, 2008, 01:52:11 AM
I meant season 6. I'm just vaguely distinguished mentally-challenged.

Didn't know that about the ratings though - I thought they'd been declining over the last few seasons, and that the last half of season 6 was terribly, terribly bad?
Title: Re: 24: Redemption tonight
Post by: Solo on November 24, 2008, 05:27:46 AM
Not even going to waste my time. S6 burned that motherfucking bridge. Its not even fun on a "so bad its good!" level anymore.

THAT WAS ONE MEDIOCRE SEASON JESUS SHUT THE FUCK UP. EVERY SHOW HAS LULLS.

ONE mediocre season? Keep dreaming. Try the last 4 seasons, pal. Difference is, at least 3-5 had SOME redeeming qualities, enough to keep me interested. 6 was just a pile of wank, and hence, Ive chosen to step off the 24 train. Ill always love S1, and hold S2 in very high regard though.
Title: Re: 24: Redemption tonight
Post by: The Fake Shemp on November 24, 2008, 07:51:48 AM
Yeah, 24 has been in a downward spiral for years.  Last season was so bad it was like watching yourself suck knob for a bad crack habit - rock bottom, baby.  Some of you need to kick the habit.  I imagine that Keifer Sutherland incapacitating and murdering people sends endorphins flowing in your brain, but it's just a chemical addiction and no amount of asskickery can disguise the fact that show is a pale imitation of itself.
Title: Re: 24: Redemption tonight
Post by: Bloodwake on November 24, 2008, 11:45:16 AM
The funny thing is that people hold Season 2 in such high regard and they forget that Kim got chased around by a fucking cougar half the season, whereas much more interesting shit happened in the following seasons. Let's also not forget the Palmer 25th amendment bullshit.

I'm not going to deny the suckiness of Season 6, but Season 1-5 are close enough in overall quality.

Honestly, I prefer Season 4-5 over Season 2-3.

There's no denying that Season one is the best, but seriously, what the fuck is everyone bitching about in these other seasons? I still haven't gotten any reasoning behind any season 4 or 5 hatred besides "they suck" and "fuck you, they suck pretty bad" and "omg downward spiral"
Title: Re: 24: Redemption tonight
Post by: Human Snorenado on November 24, 2008, 11:59:24 AM
Are you kidding me?  Season 4 was basically a wacky keystone kops kind of thing, except that it was trying to come off as OMG SO SERIOUS!  Marwais was the wacky villain who kept getting away to initiate OMG HIS NEXT VILE AND NEFARIOUS PLAN!  Come on.  S4 was crap.

Season 5 was pretty good for the most part, although it did stretch credulity with the "President is the villain" reveal.  However, I will admit that that jumping the shark moment DID allow S5 to not have the typical mis-season lull.

There ya go. Season 5 was pretty constant.

And I can see that complaint for Season 4, although I thought that bringing in the Season 3 cast slower and throughout the season helped keep the plot more interesting then the villain.

It was pretty good. I will probably respect it more on Tuesday when I see it without commercials.

The Season 7 preview just keeps looking better and better.

Honestly, it's been so freaking long since I've seen any of Season 3 that I don't remember much of it.  Which probably proves that it wasn't that great, but my reasons for remembering Season 4 are all BAD reasons.  If it's a choice between forgettable and insulting my intelligence, I guess forgettable wins out.

And Fistfullofmetal, I'd rank 'em like this:

Season 1- Great
Season 2- Great at times
Season 3- Good
Season 4- Laughably dumb but still compelling television
Season 5- Pretty awesome at times but you could tell they were reaching the bottom of the "Bag o' Ideas"
Season 6- First four episodes were great- after that it was like getting fisted with a razored gauntlet and no lube

I guess my main problems with the show is that it really, really looks like they haven't learned anything about just recycling the same dumb old plots over and over again.

-Looks like there will be a power struggle and intrigue with the new President.  Where have we seen that before?
-Looks like there will be moles within the power structures.  Where have we seen that before?
-Looks like anyone Jack is close to will have bad things happen to them, except for maybe Chloe.  But then again maybe her too.  Where have we seen that before?
-Looks like someone close to Jack in the past will end up being central to the bad guys.  Where have we seen that before?

It's like they don't even bother thinking up new ways to tell a story.

Wow, that hand to hand fight sucked!

It was like something out of the 90s.

I'll never understand why people act like S1 was godly, and S2 was great but S3 and S4 are meh. S1 had the laughably stupid amnesia plot as well as Bauer's wife and kid constantly being kidnapped. S2 was more of the same in terms of annoying subplots, but managed to make things worse with the cougar shit. Obviously they were great seasons as a whole, but why exclude S3? Episode for episode it shits on S2, in fact the thing that ruins the season if the finale; the whole baby arc was dumb too but it wasn't shockingly so. I'm not done with S4 but the action SO FAR has reached Olympian heights, Palmer's back, it features some interesting foreshadowing with the Chinese, etc. Just like S3, the second half of S4 drops most of the distinguished mentally-challenged subplot shit and focuses solely on the mission at hand. New, dumb people constantly wander into the way of the plot, forcing Jack to save them, but other than that it's ace

Yeah, Season 4 is pretty awesome.

And even Paul Raines and his contribution to the plot gets good. I don't want to spoil it for PD because I can't remember exactly when it occurs but

JESUS CHRIST WHENEVER PAUL FUCKING DIES HOLY SHIT ONE OF THE BEST 24 MOMENTS
[close]

The only season that really sucked for me was 6. It just got too stupid, and honestly they started to really fuck things up whenever the fans started bitching how bad it was and you could just tell the writers were trying to make the plot worth something. Of course, they never did.

But yeah, there's been some stupid shit in all of the seasons of 24. That's not really a way to criticize the later seasons. For those who do (except for six of course) you are having some nostalgia bouts.

One more thing: I thought Season 3 started lagging after the Salazar plot ended, but whenever Chappelle's death happened, it really changed how amazing 24 was. Also: I was one of the few fans who managed to watch the episode on its first run. I almost cried. One of the most unforgettable moments of television in my lifetime.

I didn't expect Chappelle's death to be that emotional; I didn't cry or anything but I had really begun to like the character. Although I did lol @

Jack: Do you have any friends or family you want to call?
Chappelle: My family hates me...the only friends I have are at the office (CTU)
*Jack gives a "yeah right lol" look*
 :lol

Paul's death was indeed sad. I gave him a lot of shit initially for being a bitch but he went out like a total hero. I expected him to live

Season 4 is good for one reason, if not more: Jack Bauer holds up a fucking gas station to delay the terrorists. My favorite Jack Bauer ownage moment in 24.
