Title: I'mma build a MAME cabinet (tips?)
Post by: Arbys Roast Beef Sandwich on November 24, 2008, 10:23:29 PM
As the topic says. I'm bored as crap and it might be good for a weekend project. Has anyone done anything similar?

I haven't, but I know people who have. Best tip is: don't go for cheap parts. It's worth spending the money, cause you can tell the difference once you start putting some pressure on them.

it's hard as hell to find good cabs here where I live though. Best I could find was an old Neo-Geo beater that was going for 150.

I wish I had a high-res version of that, I'd totally do it :'(

Anyway some guy wanted 300 for an Astro City cabinet, just the monitor and cabinet, no game. Will prolly pass because the cabinet looked pretty dirty.

So dcharlie, if I get an Astro City, it should normally be prewired and all that?

dcharlie, since you seem to know a fair bit about this stuff, what's a good idea for a monitor for one of these? I have two old arcade cabinets that I'm quite sure the monitors are fried in, but I've been kicking around the idea of making a MAME cabinet because of this thread. Should I just shell out and replace a monitor, or is there another route (trying to shoehorn a pc monitor in there) that I should be looking at?

I've never gotten MAME to work without some crappy ass frontend that refuses to work with any game I want to play :'(

if you don't care about trying to get native resolutions etc out of the setup, it's a lot easier to do. In that case, you are really just looking at getting a 4:3 monitor that fits the gap. A rotatable one would be nice too (hello cave shooters :))

It's only really if you want to use the old legacy monitor that it becomes a pain. Getting a "proper" replacement monitor for the arcades i'd assume is pretty expensive these days too.

Cool. Yeah, these are old. They're a Double Dragon and 1942 machine.
