I saw a new course came out last night on JPN PSN so I downloaded it.
Then I turned on the game and it had to download 790 update files and install them, which is taking over an hour so far and is only like 25% done.
Japanese developers + PS3 = smh :-\
Guess I'll be playing X360 today!

is HSG5 worth getting if you have HS: Open Tee for psp
-
it depends if you like nice graphics or not
I thought buying HSG5 was a mistake for me since I have Open Tee if I ever want to play it would be on the PSP.

There are a large faction of haters like DCharlie who think it pales in comparison to the PSP games and therefore it's not any good.
Me, OTOH, I thought it was excellent and I played the hell out of it when it came out for 30-50 hours probably. One of the best PS3 games and my favorite HSG even if it's lacking in courses and characters compared to the PSP ones. I think the visuals and presentation really added a lot. Loved all the courses. Had tons of fun online with gaffers doing all kinds of tournaments and messing around in the cool lobbies. Definitely was 9/10ish back in the day IMO.
BUT, the patching stuff is INSANE and terrible and cannot be forgiven at all.
413/790 patches installed...

I'm no hater of the game, I'm just saying that the graphics are the only real plus over the PSP games. The new shooting system is cool looking at first, but it isn't nearly as good in action as the regular style. It does look really good tho.

I'm a huge fan of the new shooting system. I used to hate it and think it was inaccurate, but back in the day all the good HSG gaffers like Astroboy went exclusive to the new system and kept singing praises about how much better it was, so I forced myself to really learn it. Once I got good at the new system I could never go back. I do fantastic with the new shot system and it's a lot more fun IMO.

I might give it another shot in the future. Did they ever patch in voice chat?
And of the three console golf games I own, this is waaaaay above the rest.
Super Swing Golf Panya :-\
We Love Golf :piss2
I should have traded in We Love golf already. Shitty Wii controls ruin another game.

No idea. Haven't played it for a year, which is why I'm downloading 790 patch files :(

The new course Jurassic Island is cool but freakishly difficult.
I got +17 and ummm...I'm not that bad :-\ The greens are insane and there's a lot of trees and bunker/water hazards along the way.
On the plus side there are meteors flaming down from the sky crashing into the ground, volcanos erupting, huge crators, t-rexs chasing raptors, various dinos fighting each other and just running through the course, lava, etc... not bad at all. I wish this had been one of the original courses at launch as I think this would've been a fun one to play a lot with friends and against the cpu. I ran around the lobbies a little after playing it and they put dinos in the lobbies to advertise the course, lol. Also noticed that the majority of Japanese players online are women. Guess golf is really popular with the ladies.

either that or online transvestism is popular with hsg fans
i imported hsg5 and never played it much -- i was thinking of giving it another go, but i think that patch story scared me off :-\

Yeah, if you put it in expect 2 hours worth of patching. :\
My only real complaint is that the online servers aren't global. Once the US version came out all the gaffers who were playing the import sold their copies and got the US version and everyone played on the US servers. I don't play enough online to justify rebuying the game. So I just stopped playing online since I had no one to play with outside of random Japanese players who birdy every single hole wtf

Long patch processes are more substantial than those 10-second X360 title updates
-
I love the game. I played in a couple gaf tournaments on Saturdays. Then non members lost their ability to PM so I couldn't contact Astrolad anymore. He was very helpful to me even though I wasn't a gaf member.
-
My only real complaint is the Prize system sucks balls
-
Yes they added voice chat recently.
There have likely been multiple updates to the game since last time you checked.

wooah there tiger.
It pales in comparison to the PSP -and- previous PS2 and that is my biggest complaint and given Mingol (HSG4 ?) is one of my top 5 games of all time, i had big expectations for the new console version i think "hater" is a bit harsh.... I expect progress, and i don't think we got it.
I don't think it's not any good, i just think it's massively disappointing - probably still the biggest disappointment of this gen. I STILL put in about 20-30 hours on the damn thing, but it's a step backwards from the PSP version AND they STILL didn't implement a better online solution which people moaned about from Mingol (at least we don't have to friggin PAY for it now, which i guess was a step in the right direction) unless of course they got around to patching it so you aren't applying to get into a tournament in particular time slots (smh assbackwards japanese online)
I agree though but with a caveat : if i'd NEVER played a Mingol game, i'd give it a decent mark - 8 ? maybe push a 9?
but that's the problem - i have played Mingol - to death.
And Mingol 5 not only offers little of note for people who played the series - it is, in many ways, a step backwards.
Well I'd played 1-4 and the first PSP title and I still loved it. I think a big thing for me was the online play felt like a huge step forward. I know it was in 4, but I didn't try it because you had to pay, so this was my first HSG online experience and outside of a few iffy things, I thought the online play was great. Your biggest complaint, that you had to book a spot for a later game, was fixed really early on when they added the ability to make your own rooms and start a game whenever you want. Now I guess they even have voice chat support. It might have taken some work, but it seems like the online play is just how HSG online should be.
Even offline I liked it quite a bit. It might have had less courses, characters, modes than the previous games, but the graphics were a nice improvement and all the little graphical details brought the courses to life and made them more enjoyable to golf on IMO. I felt the trade for better visuals at the expenses of less content was acceptable as that's what's been happening to most franchises entering the HD generation where more of the development time is taken up by the visuals.

I was just happy that HSG 5 was in HD and had online play. I wasn't really expecting as much except keeping the core game play I was used to from the past games.
I was surprised how much better people were than me using advanced shot while I stuck with traditional.
