So I let my hair grow a bit and now I have to comb it :-\ Thing is, the reason I always cut it short is because I find it a bitch to comb. I have limited control over it and after it's dry it looks rather big as it doesn't fall neatly but has a tendency to 'stand up' and curl a bit, making my head look even bigger. I found that when I don't wash my hair with soap for a few days the natural oils that come free make it more mendable and the hair stays closer to my skull...but not washing my hair with soap for days on end is not ideal either, I think.
Are there certain kinds of products that can help me in my stryggle? I don't want to release tons of hairspray chemicals on my hair either though.

get a shampoo that works for your hair and take a shower daily.

Next time I'm at a store I'll see if there's some kind of 'conditioner' that doesn't dry out my hair, cause it's dry enough already.

I shower every day!

Conditioner will make your hair softer, to the point where you don't have to comb. But in any case, you should brush it everyday (with a brush) to keep your scalp healthy and get rid of dead skin.
If you don't use conditioner and just use shampoo it won't soften your hair so much and you might find it easier to get a "messed up hair" look if you're after it. But conditioner is what moisturises your hair so it's better to use it than not.
You should only wash hair every three days or so anyway, which will mean your natural oils help get the look you want. Aside form that, get some good wax or whatever from a hairdresser if your hair's not doing what you want.
I mostly don't abide by these rules, but I used to go out with a hairdresser and occasionally I listened to what she said.

I've been growing my hair out since January and I have naturally wavy hair. It's always a struggle. :'(

I bet you my hair is wavier than yours!

If you're growing your hair long, and it's at that "in between" stage, the only real solution is a hat. :tophat

I always feel like a dipshit, a poser, a wannabe when I wear a hat or sunglasses.

I've heard this before and I'm sure it's true, but damn is that still gross. I feel nasty if I don't wash my hair during a shower.

I feel the same way, but it's one of the only ways to truly hide unruly "wings" when growing your hair out.
Though I do rock sunglasses pretty well.

Same here, I feel scuzzy if I skip a day washing my hair.

I used to wash my hair every day too, but admittedly if you wash your hair a bit less frequently after a while it balances out and stays good between washes. I still rinse my hair with water every time I'm in the shower of course, I just only use shampoo every few days.

Found a cheap solution: olive oil. Read on howstuffworks that this is a good homemade remedy for people who suffer from dry hair.
Did it and it works great.
I love olives! Is there anything they can't do?

If you're not into conditioner, use a shampoo + conditioner in one. That'll make things better I think.

That's gonna be my brother. Poor kid is screwed from all sides: dad is bald, and so are both of my mom's brothers. They all lost their hair in their twenties, too.
-
Well he's 18 and he hasn't started losing yet, but our dad started right out of high school, so maybe it would be a good idea for him. I doubt he'd do it, but it's worth telling him about I think. He loves his hair. :)

What are you going to do?
Be a slave to propecia for the next decade in a futile attempt to keep some wispy, sad looking hair strings?
Disgusting. Go to the barber, ask for a buzz, try 4 all around, and start going shorter from there until you find your look.

Women will know.
They'll sense your insecurity and that it drives you to pathetic acts.
Man up, before it's too late.
