Title: Super Mario Galaxy
Post by: Oblivion on December 06, 2008, 04:11:27 PM
89 stars in, bitches! I played the game a long time ago, but didn't get particularly far. However, the little I played (prolly around 25 stars I think) I was fairly confident that this indeed was the best Nintendo game in a decade. Now after beating the main game, I'm pleased to say I was indeed correct.

Unfortunately, some of the motion control mini games are awful, such as the ball rolling and manta ray skiing thing. And the swimming controls are quite possibly the worst I've ever encountered in a game oddly enough (unless you're using the shell).

But thank god these annoyances make up a tiny fraction of the game. The low points suck, but the high points more than make up for it. My fav galaxies:

-Freezeflame
-Dreadnought
-Battlerock
-Bowser's Lava reactor
-Bowser's Galaxy reactor
-Dusty Dune

Hopefully after I beat the game, it won't be too aggravating using Luigi.

Nah, the purple coin stars provided a decent challenge, especially if you wanted to go for 242 stars.

Eh, I'll admit I might not be as 'hardcore' as some people here, but 3 hit kills seems more than adequate for such a game.

The most fun I had with Galaxy was doing the one-hit challenges, especially the Melty Molten Galaxy one-hit challenge.

Wonderful game, I've been thinking of picking it back up and playing through it again with Luigi.  The only Wii game I've played that's made me feel (while playing it) that the Wii wasn't a total waste of money... though I would've been just as happy playing it on the Gamecube.

Brilliant game, although I agree with Guybrush about the difficulty.

The best galaxies are:

Beach Bowl Galaxy
Ghostly Galaxy
Buoy Base Galaxy
Deep Dark Galaxy
Toy Time Galaxy
Grand Finale Galaxy

One of my tops games from last year. It perfectly captured the pure fun of playing the old Mario games with some new twists, plus the music was absolutely amazing throughout.

Nintendo needs to do this kind of thing more often.

There's a lot of very good reasons to be a Nintendo hater, this isn't one of them.  Which, by default, is the best platformer of this generation and is of itself a pretty large improvement over Mario Sunshine.

it also proved valuable as a keeping-girlfriend-busy device, which I endorse.

The EAD Tokyo staff would have to more than double their staff to do a good Zelda. Unless you want another Wind Waker/wait another 6 years.

But either way, a non-Aonuma Zelda would be nice.

The best galaxies are:

Beach Bowl Galaxy
Deep Dark Galaxy

 :-X :-X

Any galaxy that has mandatory swimming levels automatically sucks. I mean really, Deep Dark Galaxy wtf?

Buoy base I'm slightly willing to forgive because of the awesome theme.

Ah, see, I think Aonuma has a great handle on the series, but I think they need to toss around some of the development teams to match him with a more talented team.  Take some of the team from EAD Zelda and combine it with select members from the Mario Galaxy team.

I actually like Aonuma quite a bit even though I rib him sometimes (it's honestly so hard to stay mad at the guy when he does interviews :teehee). I just feel that he has flashes of brilliance but can't seem to have a consistent vision throughout the games. That plus adding non-fun gameplay mechanics  :yuck  Still, at the very least he's probably the best dungeon designer in the industry (or among the best at least) so I guess that's slight reason to keep him on board if nothing else.

And that's the weird thing. Mario 64's water levels controlled a helluva lot better than Galaxy's, buy a huge fucking margin. I don't understand how that's possible after 10 fricken years!

Purple Coin Challenge?

How I beat it is essentially map out what you intend to do.  What I did was basically hug the edge of the map and then slowly work inwards.  That way you have a way to get back to the starting point.  Also, in that lava area (is it?  I forget but you should know what I'm talking about), you have to make some well done long jumps to pick up a lot of the coins there.  If you do that, you should be just fine because you should have that untouched area to the right of the starting point.

Sorry for the vagueness but that is how I did it.

Post by: cool breeze on December 18, 2008, 08:12:04 PM
is that the one where the ground disappears? my biggest problem when I did it was thinking I had to get every single coin.  Just go wild and jump all over the place and don't worry about missing a coin here or there.

and the game looks great, but no where near a 360, PS3, or PC game.

So I just beat the trial galaxies, which has some of the most sadistic game design ever. Just curious, but I can't be the only one that thought the ball rolling shit was WAY too sensitive, right? I barely tilt the fucking controller an inch and Mario goes to mach 5. It's difficult as hell to keep him steady too.

Also, did I mention this looks like a 360 game?

Whether Galaxy is "better looking" than HD games or not has nothing to do with polygon countz or whatever.

I think this looks better than the vast majority of HD games released today:

Whooo! So I FINALLY beat the game with all 120 stars. It's so uncanny how awesome this game is designed, I mean there's a shitload of stars to collect, but I found that aside from a few, the rest don't take that long to collect. It's so elegant. I really like the way Luigi controls, and imo, it SHOULD have been the way Mario controlled. Awesome game overall. 9.5/10

Not memorable? I'm gonna have to disagree. Good Egg, Buoy Base, Battlerock, Gusty Garden, Bowser's Galaxy reactor, Bowser Jr.'s Robot reactor, Chase the bunnies, and some others. That's more tracks than I can remember for something like say, Sunshine or Zelda: TP.

Quote
there's like 50+ tracks in the game.

here's the amount of remixes: 2.

yeah.

Actually, might be a slight bit more than that.

Toy Time Galaxy (remix of Super Mario Bros. overworld theme)
Sweet Sweet Galaxy (remix of SMB3 overworld level)
Bowser's Star/Lava/Dark Matter reactor (remix of Bowser levels from SM64)
Evil Mario music (remix of SMB theme)
Dusty Dune galaxy (remix of dry dry desert from SM64)

But yeah, the original stuff greatly exceeds the remixes.

I dunno.... I just couldn't hum any SMG music like I could hum Starlight Zone from Sonic 1*

the best part about that statement is that the crew behind Galaxy went on record stating that they had to sneak things by Miyamoto so he wouldn't harm the game

Erm...you're probably referring to this (http://blog.wired.com/games/2007/12/interview-super.html), which if that's the case, I think most would agree Miyamoto wasn't "harmful" ENOUGH.

Also, I wasn't sure at first, but now it's indeed true that SMG looks better than Crysis: Warhead.
