Title: Reservoir Dogs: Greatest independent movie ever?
Post by: TVC15 on November 29, 2006, 03:47:13 AM
NOTE: Before any niggling arguments about definitions start, let's consider "Independent Movie" to mean a movie made, post-late 70s, without the help of a major studio.
The plotting may be ripped off, but the script is not only inspired, but highly original. Reminiscent of caper movies while establishing a unique identity of its own. Bushemi's role is the best he'll ever have in his career. Same goes for Roth and Madsen. Maybe even Tierney and Penn, although it'd be debatable for those two. The movie contains multiple scenes that have had homages and parodies based off of them. Some of the dialogue in the movie is downright classic. The movie is eminently rewatchable, and the out-of-order storytelling has only been done better in one movie -- and Tarantino made that one, too.
It's hilarious and dramatic, it's got acting chops and clever shooting behind it, it's probably Tarantino's best movie from a punchy perspective. How can it not be the best independent movie?

I'd probably say yes. I can't think of a better independent film off the top of my head. But I'll post in here again tomorrow when I'm sober.
I have the Mr. Blonde special edition DVD. :heart

I'm trying to think of ones that would come close.
Heathers Welcome to the Dollhouse Meet the Feebles (haha) Memento American History X Fargo The Big Lebowski
I would put Memento and The Big Lebowski above Reservoir Dogs.

Swingers is pretty great, as is The Big Lebowski. And I didn't realize American History X was independent.
But I'd still give it to Reservoir Dogs, out of what I've seen and know.

I've said it before: Happiness is kinda like what American Beauty would be like if a similiar yet different awful scenario happened here on planet earth. Philip Seymour Hoffman is a god amongsty actors.
