Title: MLB thread - '08 Offseason Edition
Post by: ToxicAdam on December 10, 2008, 01:14:31 AM

K-rod signing with the Mets is glorious. It's like a gift from the baseball gods. Watching K-rod and the Mets fail on the same TV screen is almost too much joy to bear.

I am biased, but I think the Indians will get the steal of the closers. Wood has marginally better stats than K-rod, gets paid less money and less years. Wood's velocity has been getting better the past few years .. K-rod's has been getting worse. Hope that trend continues.

The traded for a catcher (named Laird). Look up his gamepic for some lols.

They are rumored to be after Putz from Seattle.

Tigers were also rumored to be after Wood, but it looks like he's going to the Indians.

The Braves... are apparently going to trade for Rick Ankiel and sign AJ Burnett.  That's probably the best case scenario that could happen in reality, and I guess I'm fine with it.  Of course, the fact that I said that I'm fine with it shows how crappy the Braves are gonna be, haha.

I can't believe that the Padres were such dicks about the Jake Peavy deal.  Supposedly the Braves put up a package of Escobar, Gorkys Hernandez or Jordan Schaefer, and Charlie Morton plus another lower pitching prospect.  That would be far superior to any deal the Cubs can put together- either of our CF prospects will be better than Felix Pie, none of their pitching prospects are better than Charlie Morton, and they'd be getting Yunel freaking Escobar right after they just traded away their own SS.  Kevin Towers has to be the dumbest fucking GM in all of baseball, other than whoever is running the Orioles, Pirates and Mariners these days.

In all seriousness, I don't think it's an AWFUL deal. I'm just going by baseball-reference, but he's a great, young hitter. Signing young players through their arbitration years seems to be the thing to do nowadays. Still, it's hard not to look at those numbers and be like "WHAT?"

Am I the only Braves fan here that is absolutely terrified of their new starting pitching staff?

Am I the only Braves fan here that is wondering why they still don't have a first baseman?

The Braves are dead to me until they get a non-corporate owner.

If only Arthur Blank's Home Depot stock was worth more...

According to fangraphs, he's worth $24.3 million a season. Doubles machine.

The Indians are awesome. Shapiro is a genius.

We still have Skinner as our 3b coach. :(

I meant to read their pitcher win values blog posts where they describe their method last night. I'll probably do it tonight. Whatever it is, it's wrong.

Less innings, worse WHIP, worse ERA. I'm confused

Glancing through one of their posts, I did notice that they base it on FIP (Fielding Independent Pitching). But once again, Meche's is worse. I remember right off the bat y2kev was calling them garbage, the more I dig, the more I agree. At least with their win values. I think their WPA stat is pretty interesting and more accurate. THT is still better.
