Did Climate Change Kill the Roman Empire?
http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/JustOneThing/story?id=6428550&page=1 (http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/JustOneThing/story?id=6428550&page=1)
Scientists have discovered extraordinarily precise data on rainfall in the Mediterranean region from 200 B.C. to 1100 A.D. which suggests that the fall of the Roman and Byzantine empires may have been partly caused by climate change.
Okay this is some scary shit. If climate change could bring down the roman empire then it will certainly be the end of the world as we know it. Tomorrow I am ridding my bike to work and I promise to recycle all my plastic. I'm writing my state senator as we speak and asking him to ban all offshore drilling and to introduce a carbon tax bill ASAP.
WE CAN DO THIS IF WE WORK TOGETHER FOLKS!!!

You don't recycle plastic?

Well... really. The Byzantine Empire was brought down by the Ottoman Turks in 1453 AD.

It also probably didn't help too much that Constantinople was a favorite pillaging spot for the later Crusades.

lol. I hear the war in iraq and the current market crisis are also caused by climate change. And butt sex.

iirc this (at least for the Romans) has been a semi-mainstream thesis for some time now. I think I remember seeing it mentioned in Larry Gonick's "Cartoon History of the Universe"
