Title: New car key blocks the use of cell phones!
Post by: ToxicAdam on December 13, 2008, 12:46:23 AM
Wooo .. if I have to wear a seatbelt everywhere, you fuckers shouldn't be able to use your cell phones.

Quote
A pair of US inventors are bringing to market a computerized car key that prevents people from chatting on mobile telephones or sending text messages while driving.
Key2SafeDriving adds to a trend of using technology to thwart speeding, drunken driving, and other risky behavior proven to ramp-up the odds of crashing.

Once slipped into a car's ignition, the key created by US university researcher Xuesong Zhou and Dr. Wallace Curry sends a wireless signal to a driver's mobile phone blocking calls or texting.

"If you're in driving mode, you can't talk or text -- period," a character tells a friend trying in vain to send a text message while driving a car in a YouTube video demonstrating how the keys work.

State law, please. Better insurance rates for using it, please.

I'd much rather a car with a built-in breathilizer to stop the fucking drunks from killing people.

smh

I can switch my Blackberry to speakerphone in my sleep, then just lay it down somewhere.

If I want to dial somebody I just either use voice recognition or type the first letter of their name and press send.

Lots of people say that it's the conversation that is the problem with people driving and talking on a cell phone. This makes sense, because conversations can be a little distracting. But then should you always drive alone in your car or not talk to your passengers ever? That's the thing that gets me. People say hands-free cells are still bad because the conversation distracts you. Makes no sense.

Don't we have any libertarians on this board? I kept thinking the next post would be a furious libertarian laying the smackdown about legislating us into having the rights of children.

I'm not a libertarian. I want to shoot the smokers.

Hope that it would allow hand units or something. Total blocking of it is dumb.

Get your car up to about 90mph, and kill it and let it coast while you dial up your buddies. Problem solved.

Makes perfect sense.  A phone conversation is not the same as a conversation with someone in person.  A person in the car will likely halt conversation if he sees something in your path that requires the driver's attention.  A person on the phone obviously will just continue talking.

Regardless if it makes sense to people who grew up with cell phones, the studies bear it out.  Driving while talking on a cell can be just as bad as driving drunk.

90%+ of the time that I see someone doing something stupid driving, it comes down to them being on a fucking phone.

When you're driving, you should drive.  Not eat, not talk on the phone, not drink a beer, you should be driving.

People take that responsibility WAY too lightly.

If you're talking on a cell and you see a lot of traffic or something, you can easily just end your call. If you're drunk and the same situation comes up, you can't just magically cover up so you don't drive like a moron.

Drivers on cell phones >>>>> drunk drivers

Perfect. Maybe this will finally make assholes USE THEIR FUCKING BLINKER.

Last night someone turned left across 5 lanes without a left turn blinker (in an intersection that a lot of people shoot straight across.)

Luckily no one across the street was waiting to see where s/he was going.

I flashed my lights at them as I followed them out of the parking lot.

A few miles up they made another left without the blinker, just stopping in the middle of the road waiting for it to clear.

I flashed my lights again.  I'm also quite sure that oblivious bitch had no idea why I was flicking my lights at her, but that shit incenses me.

God forbid I see someone driving like that with a cell phone, I usually scream at them.

I'm gonna get shot, but it will be worth it.  I hate almost ALL of you when you're behind the wheel.

You could, but most don't.

If you're drunk, you shouldn't drive.  If you're driving, drive, don't talk on the phone or eat.

It's really that simple.

When I'm behind people like that, I fantasize about driving a tank and running them the fuck over. It makes me feel a little better. :)

Most don't, but the option is still there, making it safer than driving drunk.

Then again, I don't know anyone who was run down and killed by a driver on a cell. I know too many people killed by drunks.

I didn't do the surveys, I'd rather people drive on cell phones than drunk as well.

The point is, driving while talking on the cell phone is more dangerous than most people realize.  If you need to make a call that bad, pull over.

Haha I know. And it is a more dangerous than people realize, but I don't think it's as bad as lots of people make it out to be.

Wasn't there a study about 3~4 years ago which showed the likelihood of driving unsafely when using a cellphone is equivalent to driving drunk? I mean, I bet there's a huge margin for the difference between talking on a phone and texting, and again for "tipsy" vs. "shitfaced, three sheets to the wind, all cannon firing," but still.

That's what I was referring to.  I don't think that driving drunk is safe, but the sheer volume of idiots driving around with cell phones grafted to their ears (plus females who HAVE to drive SUVs/VANs) has made today's driving climate more unsafe than it's ever been.

People are convinced they can have a meaningful conversation with their mom, eat a big mac, smoke a cigarette, and drive in rush hour traffic on the way home.  It's bullshit and it needs to stop.

People need to realize they are in full control of a two ton vehicle travelling 50+ mph and they need to give that their full attention.  Both mentally and physically.

Personally, I'd rather it be a device to stop drunk driving. Thats much worse.

My mom drove minivans for most of my life. She had 2 kids plus their friends, more often than not, to shuttle back and forth to sports practices and the mall. I learned how to drive in a minivan and because of that I am a better driver/parker than people who learn on and only drive small cars.

So wtf? :confused

There are too many issues involved with making this mandatory.  There are valid reasons why someone would sometimes need to be on the phone while driving.

I never said they didn't have their place as vehicles.  I was merely stating that if your kid t-bones me while talking on a cell phone, I'd rather him be in a honda civic rather than a Cadillac Escalade.  Far too many teens/moms are stuck in suv's for 'their protection' while their newfound 'invincibility' turns their car into a weapon.

Sorry for the late reply, but I was banned while the thread was still active, and I was reminded of it today by Charles Barkley arrest.
I'd much rather a car with a built-in breathilizer to stop the fucking drunks from killing people.

In-car breathalyzers are expensive, costing about $1,000. By installing one in every car, we'd basically be fining every car owner $1,000, even when they've done absolutely nothing wrong. Aside from the financial cost, such devices would trample on people's liberties. People who have committed no crimes would be subject to a form of monitoring whenever they attempt to drive their own cars. That isn't right.

That's a good point, actually. You should post more, so you can drop more bombs of knowledge.

Really is a good point.

For the record I wouldn't want this device in anyone's car.  I wouldn't mind for it to be illegal to drive while talking on cell phones (hands-free included) but I wouldn't want to enforce that like this.
