Sony plans to refresh the PlayStation Portable product line with a PSP-4000 model in late 2009 and launch a true successor - a PSP2, if you like - later.
Publishing sources, speaking to Eurogamer, were unable to provide any further detail on next year's update, which will presumably follow this year's PSP-3000 in taking an iterative approach. The PSP-3000 launched this October and followed a 2000-series model, the first Slim & Lite, in September 2007.
Even fewer details were available on the PSP successor, but we're told that developers are already working on games.
Sony has not ruled out either scenario, despite SCEE president David Reeves' assertion in MCV last week that "there are currently no plans for a PSP2". "I go to Tokyo quite a lot and no one has referred to it - I think they have their hands full at the moment," he said, non-committally.
Sony UK told Eurogamer today that it would not comment on rumour and speculation.
PSP-3000 bundles currently retail for GBP 129.99 the UK following its October launch, and despite sporadic software support and fewer platform-exclusives than Nintendo's DS, strong sales in Japan have propelled it to sales of over 30 million according to Sony's corporate sales website.
i wonder if they'll finally manage to get the screen right.

How powerful you think it'll be? My guess is somewhere between PS2 and PS3. The only way it could match PS3's specs would be if it released in like '11 or '12. Or maybe they'll go the Nfag approach and give it ancient tech
-
honestly i don't care if the psp2 isn't much more powerful than the psp as long as sony ditches umd and puts a nice high quality screen in the system
-
i'm not buying another one until they add a second analog stick
-
the 4000 is just another hardware revision but the article mentions that developers are working on psp2 games
i'm not buying another one until they add a second analog stick
oh yeah, forgot about that.
psp2 needs to have another analog stick.
-
nope. never read anything about gpu rumors
considering the line up for the psp i just wish the psp2 would come out already
fuck another revision
-
If they make a next handheld, I hope they are less shortsighted. UMD and the lack of a second analog are terrible design decisions. Still my favorite handheld, but it would have been so much better.
-
I wish I could put an image in my head to those numbers. Those stock images are not very descriptive. Maybe, Drinky can comment. He's usually good with this tech stuff.
-
yeah, how many wiis could fit inside a psp2
-
Don't care about psp4000, but psp2 intrigues me. 2 analog sticks are my only requirement.
-
I was planning on checking out the PSP but I might just wait for the PSP2
-
if psp2 gets rid of the UMD (which i give a ~90% chance) an maybe use flash memory of some sorts (memory stick again?) then i would be interested in checking it out
-
I'd be really interested in a PSP2 that's backwards compatible.

I think that only way to make PSP2 PS2 compatible is to put full PS2 hardware into it,with some improvements for PSP2 games(memory,aa,af,...).

I'm still waiting for the PS3 to get full PSP emulation
