My question is: Do I have to have the Original RPG linked here ( http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=starwars/article/rpgsagaed ) to play it? I have a group willing to try it, so thats why I'm looking into it.

A group of friends and I tried to play some D&D in high school. It was an epic failure.

No, it's just that we didn't really know what we were doing and it sucked and was not fun.
for dnd to be effective, it has to be like a virus
one nerd gets it, then spreads it to other nerds
once you get familiar with crap like THAC0, no role-playing rules will stand in your way.
i was never a big star wars roleplayer, largely for the same reason i wasn't a strong Aliens roleplayer. I didn't really have a lot of fun with licensed games. everyone wanted to make thin amalgamations of the heroes of the properties rather than just playing in the sandbox that was that world.
my favorite world was probably Torg, but the rules were shittastic. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torg

THACO is no longer around. It disappeared when third edition came out.

yes and then replaced that with skills and feats and stuff
i never played 3 or 3.5 but really like 4. everything goes so quickly and you can concentrate on doing stuff rather than consulting tables and the like.
