I don't understand why Deerhunter is the new critical darling. Their music is good enough, but I don't think it's anything particularly special.
-
how is he able to life his hands up?
-
Looks photoshopped or otherwise, he needs to go to a hospital

Hey I'm BrandNew LO couldnt keep my attentio but this guy he's so dreamy hehe
-
he needs a fuckin hamburger.. no wait put some cheese on that
-
if a holocaust survivor and starving African ever had a malnutritioned baby, this is what he would look like
-
oh nevermind. the dude suffers from Marfan Syndrome. I'm an asshole.
-
Yeah, I'm fairly convinced his records only get good reviews out of pity for him being all diseased and shit.

damn we should make an evilbore band then
-

nah, blame him or whoever told him he should take a picture like that.
Yeah, I'm fairly convinced his records only get good reviews out of pity for him being all diseased and shit.
probably
I actually want to listen to one of the songs now
-
I actually really liked Microcastles, but Cryptograms was fuckboring.
I already know pitchfork is probably gonna call it the best album of the year tomorrow, but it probably deserves it more than Cryptograms.
I haven't really listened to Of Montreal's new album, but I haven't heard good things. I loved Hissing Fauna though, mybe I should check it out.
-
I dunno. My favorite album of the year is probably Rabbit Habits by Man Man, which is now my favorite record by them.
-
Hey, what do you know, I just got done listening to that. That's really great too, don't know where it ranks for me.
-
At first I liked it, but I thought I liked Six Demon Bag more, but I've kinda done a 180 on that. I think Six Demon Bag just made a stronger impression on me since it was my first exposure to that weirdass band.
-
if a holocaust survivor and starving African ever had a malnutritioned baby, this is what he would look like
Seriously, straight out of Treblinka. :omg
-
Weren't you really into Dig Lazarus Dig earlier this year?
oh and
(http://www.imagechicken.com/uploads/1229676298046889100.jpg)
-
Yeah, I like Dig Lazarus Dig a lot. I'm a Nick Cave fanthing though so my recommendation and love for that album doesn't mean much on an objective scale.
-
I've given it a few listens and it's pretty cool. Don't know if it was more than just an enjoyable listen this year for me, though.
But I have equally as questionable loves this year, most notably Islands' new album. The Arm was my soundtrack for my entire summer :(
-
I liked Atlas Sound, but the lyrics make me smh frequently.
-
I will never understand the Deerhunter buzz. They were fucking terrible live
-
Microcastles is good, though I'm not super-hyped on the band. :bow Nothing Ever Happened
-
Deerhunter seems to have changed their live act a bit over the past year. I saw them just last year when they toured with Battles and not only were they very confrontational, Cox picking fights with the audience unprovoked, but also considerably more abrasive than even Cryptograms would suggest. Of the folks I saw them with, I was the only one who walked away with something more than a negative impression (although it wasn't much more).
THIS YEAR, I saw them on election night (w/ Times New Viking :rock) and the sound is much more in tune with the kind of stuff that's on Microcastle. All the new stuff is soft and textured and the older songs are scaled back a bit sonically. I also met Cox and chatted a bit before the show and he is an extremely nice guy. I have nothing but heaps of praise for this man and his band.
-
when i first moved to nyc, i was lucky enough to see Wire with Times New Viking. TNV were great live.
-
I can hardly stand to listen to their album, unfortunately. I have a special equalizer set up just for them in iTunes to keep my eardrums from blowing out when one of their songs pops up on random.
-
ha. i can see that.
-
one day i'm going to listen to all these shitty looking indie bands that Pitchfork loves smh
-
one day i'm going to listen to all these shitty looking indie bands that Pitchfork loves smh
They just picked that shitty looking indie band Portishead's album as their second best of the year.
-
Deerhunter pulled in #5 on Pitchfork's year end list: http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/feature/148001-the-50-best-albums-of-2008?page=5
A lot of disagreeable stuff on there, unsurprisingly. The position of No Age's Nouns is a shock.
-
The Carter III at #11 :barf
assholes
kanye at 21 barf barf
-
Fleet Foxes is a really safe pick. I was surprised by that.
-
The Carter III number fucking 11 :lol :lol :lol
I agree with the number one though. I haven't listened to a deeper and more textured album than Fleet Foxes this year.
I'm happy Vampire Weekend was so high. I don't really care what people say about it being overrated and for trendy distinguished effete fellows, the album was fucking fun. Walcott is incredible. I love what they say:
In a time when other populist groups like Spoon, Arcade Fire, and the Hold Steady-- potential radio staples at certain points in rock history-- have commercial ceilings somewhere between "an appearance on 'SNL'" and "gold record," I can't find myself rooting against Vampire Weekend's relative success. At the end of the day, all they've done is craft an album of crisp, endlessly replayable guitar pop songs with expressive, detail-heavy lyrics and charming music that serves as a welcome antidote to today's more overly compressed sounds. How dare they.
Honestly their top ten I agree with.
-
I've talked so much shit about Kanye's album without hearing all of it. I'll download it today, plus this Deerhunter nonsense and Fleet Foxes
-
Be prepared to NOT like Deerhunter, I think. Which album, Microcastles? It's by far their best. But it's tough shit to get into.
Anybody who DOESN'T like Fleet Foxes confuses me. They're so likable. Awesome awesome folksy stuff.
Oh and 808s and Hearts as 21 :-\
-
:rock Titus Andronicus at number 25 :rock
That and Fleet Foxes were by far my favorites of the year.
-
Deerhunter is pretty meh. If I had the yearning to listen to Deerhunter, I'd probably put in a record by one of the several better bands that have similar influences but are, well, better, like Pacement, SY, or The Fall or something. I'm not sure it would have ended up on any sort of my best of list since they are somewhat contrary to my personal aesthetic, but the Fleet Foxes record is really good stuff. I'm not sure how much you will like it, PD. It's pretty much inarguably White People Music.
Also, non-rap sites just shouldn't include rap on their lists. I really hope that someone at Pitchfork feels embarrassed by that Weezy pick a year or two from now.

How big do you think his penis is? :hyper

Pitchfork understands hip hop to a certain degree - they've recognized many of the best hip hop albums of this decade like Madvillainy and Fishscale. The Lil Wayne love strikes me as typical Pitchfork poserness though. Oh, I have no idea what he's saying, the songs make no sense, I don't even know what I just listened to...but this is pretty awesome! smh. I kinda figured they'd trash the album after it sold a billion copies right out the gate.
They rate rap differently than they rate other music. With rap, style over substance is fine - good production that distracts you from the lyrics/flow is praised (hence the Kanye love affair). On the other hand they trash rock bands that have similar set ups
dude my taste for white music is kinda impressive. I've realized I might like Country Rolling Stones more than I like Blues/Rock-yer-face Rolling Stones. Let it Bleed <3
-
:yuck Exile on Main Street > Let it Bleed :yuck
-
Exile on Mainstreet>Let it Bleed>Stick Fingers
-
Like their spiritual ancestors on the 1980s SST Records roster, Fucked Up understand that hardcore is not a means to codify punk rock's parameters, but to blow them wide open.
DIE MONSTER YOU DON'T BELONG IN THIS WORLD
-
haha, wow @ Nouns being #3 :lol
I'm pretty happy about that, actually. Just surprising 'cause I knew the album got a lot of buzz, but didn't realize it was that much of a critical darling to pitchfork. It reminds me of a less refined and less complex Daydream Nation...which is really weird because the two albums don't have much in common, besides the occasional ambient interludes. I just get a similar vibe listening to it.
-
Fleet Foxes is a really safe pick. I was surprised by that.
I really like Fleet Foxes, but man, that was the safest #1 Pitchfork has ever gone with.
That's like TIME Magazine and NPR safe.
-
I dunno. My favorite album of the year is probably Rabbit Habits by Man Man, which is now my favorite record by them.
:bow
-
i still don't think i've listened to any album more than Vampire Weekend this year.
-
Offend Maggie was probably my most listened to album, all in the course of about 3 weeks. that's usually how I listen to Deerhoof albums--non stop from the moment it leaks, so that I'm pretty much done with it for a year by the time I buy the retail release.
Favorite would have to be Spiderman of the Rings.
-
I don't think I've ever seen you say something positive :(
-
I was gonna say, you're a kind muthafucka on facebook
-
Take you're pick, but I meant the former
-
yeah, fleet foxes ??? it's great, but the folk revival thing has been happening for a while now. then again, i can't be assed to rank music.
-
Folk revival? Seriously? I haven't really encountered a Fleet Foxesque artist in the last few years, whereas a Deerhunter is dime a dozen in underground music now.
-
Folk revival? Seriously? I haven't really encountered a Fleet Foxesque artist in the last few years, whereas a Deerhunter is dime a dozen in underground music now.
Dude. As awesome as they are, Fleet Foxes reminds me a lot of Band of Horses and My Morning Jacket.
-
haha, looks like that nicca has down sydrome or something. lol, funny 'lil nicca
-
Folk revival? Seriously? I haven't really encountered a Fleet Foxesque artist in the last few years, whereas a Deerhunter is dime a dozen in underground music now.
there's also the freak folk revival of recent years, but that's a lil different.
Devendra Banhart >>>>>>> Bob Dylan
-
Folk revival? Seriously? I haven't really encountered a Fleet Foxesque artist in the last few years, whereas a Deerhunter is dime a dozen in underground music now.
I know Deerhunter (or Atlas Sound, for that matter) isn't anything particularly special...not sure why you're telling me this :lol
I think of Fleet Foxes as an extension of freak folk + some psychedelic influence, but with a better sense for song craft. So freak folk minus the bullshit, in other words. Sufjan Stevens, Joanna Newsom, Iron and Wine, Devandra Banhart come to mind. and that stuff has been getting pretty popular in the 00s (ever since Wire ran a cover with Sunburned Hand of the Man, claiming there's a freak folk/Americana revival.) Of course, the only truly noisy freak folk group to break through is Animal Collective...the rest is all pretty straight forward, relatively speaking.
edit: not sure why I'm typing all this, just go their last.fm page, you'll see a lot of popular groups from the past few years linked to them.
-
Hm. I never really connected Fleet Foxes to My Morning Jacket or Devandra Banhart, but I guess I see what you mean.
Regardless, I think Fleet Foxes has the most successful formula for that new sort of Americana now.
-
I don't understand why Deerhunter is the new critical darling.
deerhunter is for fegs
ps: i wouldnt have known this guy was from deerhunter unless i read this
