Title: Broaden my horizons
Post by: Eel O'Brian on December 20, 2008, 01:34:29 AM
I wish to try something new.  Be it music, movies, books, etc.  Suggest one thing that I would enjoy (you only get one suggestion, I'll disregard any you make past that).  On Sunday evening, I will assign a number to each reply, and then use one of those web dice roll generators to pick the number.  I'll watch/read/listen to the selection, and report my observations here.

PS - It's my slow season, so try to keep it under $25, please.

I'd suggest The Venture Bros a lovely animated cartoon show that's hilarious and nostalgic. All for the low low price of 12.99 a season

If you haven't read it, I would read One Hundred Years of Solitude by Marquez. It definitely gave me a start.

Learn to love the band FLAW (http://www.google.com/musica?aid=46mWilAkxLK&sa=X&oi=music&ct=result).

Listen to the song "many faces", "out of whack" , "decide", "my letter", "what I have to do", and "reliance" :heartbeat amongst the great heavy stuff. :)

My favorite band of 2007.

i got some music suggestions

try the band 10 Years ( http://www.myspace.com/10years )
love or hate kinda music, they have two albums out 'The Autumn Effect' and 'Division', the autumn effect is like a lyrical maze of beauty that never gets old and Division is a bit more radio friendly but still good. two very different albums nonetheless

and if you want some rap try
styles of beyond http://www.myspace.com/stylesofbeyond ( two albums again, 2000 Fold, considered a classic and Megadef which is just ok)
one block radius http://www.myspace.com/oneblockradius ( ignore that first song on their page it sucks and isnt on their albums)

I've tried getting more into jazz. For the most part it just doesn't make sense to me. Granted I love certain albums - for instance I really like Giant Steps (Coltrane). For the most part Kind of Blue makes little sense to me

Where should I start?

If Kind of Blue didn't click check out Sorcerer or Bitches Brew.

I like them more than Kind of Blue.

What type of jazz do you like? How does it not make sense?

Well I definitely like Giant Steps. My parents would play On the Corner (Miles Davis) a lot when I was younger and I definitely like that album. I like Madlib's Yesterday's New Quintet stuff

When I say it doesn't make sense...it just sounds like noise. I dunno, like stream of consciousness chaos with few patterns.

Depends on the type of jazz, and the type of artist.

I think Latin jazz is pretty good at conducting pretty structured pieces, for example.

I have decided to be indecisive, and try several suggestions from this thread over time, since I can sample most of it via the miracle of newsgroups.  I'll bump up the thread as I make my way through the list.
