Title: What are some good, cheap old 360 games? Budget titles, if you will.
Post by: Human Snorenado on December 23, 2008, 01:14:56 AM
I love a bargain.  It's a sickness in me; can't help it and probably wouldn't want to if I could.

Since I'll be joining in the current gen finally, what are some good budget options to occupy my time until I go back to school in June?  I'm already eyeing Viva Pinata and maybe Blue Dragon... the latter if I get positive feedback from someone that isn't demi.  Other suggestions are appreciated.  Some action games would be nice.

Dead Rising
Crackdown
Project Gotham Racing 4
Call of Duty 2
Condemned
GRAW

I don't know if they would be cheap or not, but they are old.

Do you in general like RPGs?  If you are a DQ/SNES-era FF fan, check out Blue Dragon.  It got plenty of shit for not being innovative, but it's fucking pretty and has really varied visuals.  It's long (60-70 hours), easy, and pretty charming.  I compare it to Skies of Arcadia in that it doesn't really do anything special while still managing to feel "special."

Dead Rising is probably the best budget title, its a fucking top game

I second TVC's recommendation of Blue Dragon, and raise it with Enchanted Arms...  :tomato I actually really enjoyed it, characters were fun, battle system was enjoyable and the story was engaging enough.

I liked the teensy bit of Enchanted Arms I played, but I will throw up a caveat that it is definitely like, C+ gaming, at best.  And although the localization is hilarious at the beginning, it doesn't stay consistently hilarious, which is kind of a shame.

Ridge Racer 6
Blue Dragon

Got both of those new for $5 and $10 respectively so I'm sure you can find similar deals in your area.  Both are good games.

i agree with most of drohnes post

earth defense force is probably the greatest cheap title for x360, simple shooter with loads of guns, nothing deep story wise, yet challenging and fun

i'll join the crackdown and condemned love train, they're both dirt cheap right now ($12.99 each)

if you don't already own it for pc, the orange box is $17.99 used right now

i don't know if you like racing games, but burnout paradise is $26.99

I've played the most 360 games here out of anyone. I play the good games and the bad games. I am on the mark on all my recommendations. Everyone else here is a joke.

That said, you want

Prey
Dark Sector
Condemned
Tomb Raider Legend
Kameo
GRAW
Dead Rising
Lost Planet (Colonies if you want)
GRAW2
Overlord
Crackdown
Enchanted Arms
Blue Dragon
Lost Odyssey
EDF2017
Operation Darkness
Rainbow Six Vegas (multi is still habitable)
Viva Pinata Party Animals (Because me and TVC are in it)
Call of Duty 4 (if only because the multi is still very popular)
Halo 3 (again, huge popular multi)
Gears of War (huge popular multi)
Viva Pinata

If you haven't played it on PC, Rainbow Six Vegas (only the first one) is awesome, and can be found super-cheap used.

Also Dead Rising.

I failed to mention that I know for sure I'm getting Fallout 3 and Lost Odyssey as gifts.

So, since GS will be doing the Buy 2 get 1 sale after Christmas, this is what I'm looking at:

$17.99 variety pack
Viva Pinata
Blue Dragon
Dead Rising

$17.99-$19.99 variety pack 2
EDF 2017
Assassins Creed
Enchanted Arms

Mid $20ish Action pack
BioShock
Gears
Lost Planet: Colonies
-or- DMC4, but I don't know if it sucks or not so someone tell me, 'kay?

$12.99 and lower value pack
Condemned
Crackdown
RR6

demi- Last Remnant looks awesome, but I'll wait until it's cheaper.  I've got like 3 years of catalog to go through at a cheap price first!

so much fail.

The second one imo is only good if you're into online. And even then I didn't like it much.

For everything the first one did badly, it struck me as greatly ambitious. A great deal of care went into it...

the second one, not so much.

I can blanket recommend the first one. If people really like it, the second one is pretty cheap too.

**edit/ I'd put in DMC4 over Enchanted Arms. DMC4 is better than Lost Planet, both are better than Enchanted Arms. If you really want an RPG, pay a bit more for Vesperia.

I think with Fallout 3, Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon I'll be fine on rpgs for a good while.  Then when Vesperia and Last Remnant drop a bit, I'll pick them up.

Gamestop occasionally has a buy 2 get 1 free offer on used games.  Apparently they're having one for a couple of days after Crimmus, so it's time to stock up!

Great timing for this thread. I just won $250 from my FF league and am 50/50 on getting a 60gb one as early as tomorrow.
Looks like DR, Crackdown, and GoW1 on the cheap. :hyper

I want to play Gears1 first and get the story and mechanics down before playing G2.

unless you an arcade unit with no hard drive, you can always just try out demos for a lot of these games.  Just take into account that some demos aren't indicative of the final game quality (Banjo and Blue Dragon have bad demos, Mirror's Edge has a good demo)

:wag Get an arcade and a 60 gig hd pack for $99, it's what I did.

Benefits:

-More likely to get a Jasper.
-3 months of xbl gold
-no obnoxious chrome disc tray

Cons:

-no hd cables included with arcade, but you can get an hdmi cable for like $7 on overstock.com
-instead of lego indiana jones and kung fu panda, you get sega superstar tennis and 5 cruddy arcade games.  I'd be trading either in regardless, myself.

I really liked Mirror's Edge, but if you go in expecting more of the demo, that isn't what you're getting.

Why wouldn't the 60gb ones be Jasper by now?
Doesn't the Arcade lack a headset too?
I already have a HDMI cable, so no loss there.
3 months of XBL sounds like the deal breaker to go your route.

You still get 3 months of XBL with a Pro, you just have to spread it across 3 accounts. So you'd sacrifice your saves and gamerscore.

All of the anecdotal evidence I've seen on various interweb forums has the majority of the Jaspers being Arcade units.  As for the headset, if you buy the 60 gig pack for $99, it COMES with a headset along with the hd and 3 month live card.

I actually started buying some budget titles for 360 (there's a lot since it's selling like shit), but only gotten Bioshock and Gears of War (the first one) so far.

Haven't played Gears very far yet, but it's pretty entertaining so far.

Bioshock on the other hand is a total shitbag. Terrible game. Only paid 20 euros for it but still feel like I was ripped off. Fucking awful.

Before that I only had GTAIV. Pretty bad game.

I ordered it.  What the hell, NG1 (the xbox version, that is) was probably my favorite action game from last gen.
Title: Re: What are some good, cheap old 360 games? Budget titles, if you will.
Post by: Himu on December 24, 2008, 01:29:19 AM
I think it does some things better than NG1. It's a fun game. The action is probably better, and it's a lot harder too. Problem are the boss fights, mostly. But compared to the other action games this gen, I think NG2 is definitely a step above those.

You like Dragon Quarter right? Have you looked into Dead Rising? A lot of BoF:DQ's staff made Dead Rising, and it uses a similar save system, time limit system. If it weren't for Fallout 3, Dead Rising would remain my favorite game this gen.

Should be a must play for all 360 owners. The sequel is going to be the best thing ever hopefully maybe oh god it better be. Just don't go into it assuming that you can do everything first playthrough and you'll enjoy the shit out of it - hell, you'll probably have to restart after a few hours just to grind your levels up a little.
