Oh for fucks sake.  I just bought the complete Civ pack the other day for 50 bucks.  Goddamnit....and I know better than to buy shit off Steam during the weekday.  Wait for the weekend.  Always.

*sigh*

Damn good deal though.

I don't know why I'm doing it but I can't pass up Bioshock for 5 bucks.  It's like going to Costco and seeing that 4 pack of giant sized ketchup bottles.  You don't need it, you don't really want it, and there's no way in hell you'll ever use all of it but the price it just too damn low to ignore.

How's The Settlers Rise of an Empire?  I've never really played a Settlers game outside of a demo a long, long time ago but I'm in the mood for a city building game.  Is it any good?
Title: Re: Steam Xmas 08 sale! :hyper
Post by: Fragamemnon on December 26, 2008, 08:35:47 PM
The latest Settlers game is pretty good. It's sort of a shame that ubisoft doesn't have NA distribution rights for Anno 1701 because it's better, but I liked Settlers: Rise of an Empire well enough. It's certainly pretty and attractive. I think most of the naysayers of the game were people who just wanted Settlers 2 remade again w fancier graphics.

That being said, if you are looking for a citybuilder on Steam you might want to check out Children of the Nile, which I played the everliving shit out of this summer. One big caveat, though-the game is not fast paced and has a lot of downtime-so much so that at times I would read a book while the workers built my pyramids. Ingenious game though and a terrific simulator of an actual community and society, complete with things like a real socioeconomic ladder and a fully contained supply chain. There is a demo out on Steam if you want to try it. Oh, and it certainly doesn't look as good as Settlers:RotE, which is gorgeous.

Yeah I tried the Nile demo a few days ago 'cause that seemed like my cup of tea but the interface was giving me a headache, mostly because of the laptop I was playing it on.  Everything in the interface was just too damn small.   I think I'll give it another go on my desktop with the 26" monitor.

Is there a UT3 community? I sort of want it, again, but I'm not sure if I'll be alright with just playing bots.

well don't some games have problems with online shit if I get them for free, or did I just imagine that?  anyway I plan on getting as many of my future games for free as possible because that's what poor people do.

also fuck yeah I'm gonna get some old games that only work with xp on the steam versions.  HEXEN :rock

Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition
Bejeweled Deluxe
Hinterland
Uplink/Darwinia Pack
Multiwinia + Defcon
Reaxxion
Luxor 2
Trials 2 Second Edition

Also should I dip in with TF2? My FPS skill is pretty shit.

Did anyone get defense grid? I wouldn't mind a nice looking tower defense game.

Defense Grid is sweet. I picked it up before the Christmas deal for $20 and it was definitely worth it.

I got sick of having problems between my Steam Company of Heroes and my retail Opposing Fronts so I went ahead and bought it on steam. Recent purchase:

Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts     14.99 USD
Multiwinia                                              4.99 USD
World in Conflict                               22.49 USD

Grand total: $133.85

I'm done now. For real.

EDIT:

...

Dark Messiah of Might and Magic               7.49 USD
World of Goo                                      14.99 USD

Grand total: $156.33

Done. No more.

Anyone else having any crashing issues with Civ4's Beyond the Sword?  It's happened twice in a row now and I can't figure out what's causing the problem.  It's running on Vista 64 so that could be the culprit right there but I don't know how to isolate the issue let alone rectify it.

I'm thinking about getting Bullet Candy, Hinterland, Mount & Blade, and the Silent Hunter collection. The only ones I'm really on the fence about are Mount & Blade and the Silent Hunter games. I tried out Hinterland and really enjoyed what I played of it and Bullet Candy is only like $4 so I might as well get that (I love Geometry Wars-type shooters). I tried Mount & Blade but didn't really get into it but since it's half off I kinda feel obligated to pick it up and see if it gets better when you build up your army and start taking over castles. The Silent Hunter collection looks awesome because I've never played a naval combat game like it before.

Edit: I pulled the trigger on Bullet Candy, Hinterland, and Mount & Blade.

Got too many things last night :bow Steam :bow2
Civ 4 pack, COH gold, PoP pack, Flatout UC, Bioshock double-dip, Trials 2, Heavy Weapon, and Reaxxion (yay 1 dollar games).
I was going to get the Unreal pack but it disappeared  :wtf

At this point in my backlog I could probably not get another game in 2009 and I'd still have something fresh to play.
