I wonder, would ones enjoyment of Forest Gump have been a different if the lead wasn't played by Tom Hanks?

I don't particularly think so.  The movie is incredibly schmaltzy no matter how you cut it.  Being that's what Tom Hanks is good at, he probably was the best person to play the role.

Yeah, when I heard the Forrest Gump thing and realized that the premise of Benjamin Button could be very schmaltz-friendly, drudge sirens started flashing.  And then Ebert's review listed some points that I was sort of thinking of before:

http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20081223/REVIEWS/812239995

The whole thing about this being a "moving" movie when the premise has no congruence to reality, that really clicked with me.  And also the movie is too fucking long.

It is an ok movie.  I think it is getting dogpiled right now for reasons unknown other than to join in.  They laughed at how arbitrary some things seemed to be but didn't mind it in The Dark Knight, Iron Man, or all those other comic book films that had loose ends that were left untied or done half assed.

That said, it wasn't brilliant either.  It was a stylish but generic film that had some hot chicks in it doing what hot chicks tend to do in movies.

It is worth a rental at least

I got fifty dollars in movie theater funny money and am seriously considering blowing some of it on Benjamin Button on Sunday.  Prole is trying to discourage me from seeing it - calling it Forrest Gump 2: Gump Harder, but I refuse to believe that Fincher would be dragged down to that level of schmaltz.

I don't know, I just don't think The Spirit is something that needed, or should have ever seen movie adaptation. I have no idea how the film turned out, maybe it's a good film, but The Spirit? Pick some other fucking material. But hey, I guess they are starting to run dry, so it's either this, or create something from scratch.

Sin City is mixed: certain arcs are good, others not so good

The first part (Yellow Bastard)is still jarring to me; Michael Madsen's performance sounds so phoned in. The Hard Goodbye is very good imo, mainly because Rourke is a badass. The Big Fat Kill is good too, although there are some WTF moments. And I like That Yellow Bastard as well.

Title: Re: i saw benjamin button last night.

I think The Big Fat Kill + Yellow Bastard part 2 are the weak parts.  Mickey Rourke's section was the best.

I never read the graphic novels but comic book movies are still big business and I expect other material to get exploited until the profit opportunity is gone.  Probably won't be for another few years.

The whole thing about this being a "moving" movie when the premise has no congruence to reality, that really clicked with me.

 ??? ??? ???

So no fantasy story or anything that isn't based entirely in our reality can be moving?

Not based entirely in our reality, but that is in some way analogous to our reality.  And to make it clear, I'm not condemning the movie based on that issue, it's just something I was thinking about.

So our attempt at seeing Waltz with Bashir failed last night. Gonna try again this evening and then hit up one of the restaurants that Cohen recommended.

Anyone else seen Waltz with Bashir yet? It looks like it's only in New York at the moment in the states, but it's playing at two theaters here in Vancouver...

Way too long, I definitely felt the two and a half hour running time, although I think it definitely picked up quite a bit in the second half. I didn't understand why

The Clive Owen section of Sin City was my favorite part of the film up until the part when Clive gets hit with a grenade and all it does is toss him back a few feet.

I could deal with Mark Madsen shooting Bruce Willis six times in the chest and then saying "damn it, don't make me kill you." I could handle Mickey Rourke surviving multiple collisions with a speeding car without any broken bones. But you can't expect me to believe that a person can stand right next to an exploding grenade and not end up with at least a few third-degree burns and shrapnel wounds.

I thought he was in the water?

I thought this movie was okay.

Very beautifully done, with great performances all around.  But this literally felt like Forrest Gump 2: The Gumpening.  It felt like it really tried to rely too much at tugging at your heartstrings, to the point of where your tears would cry tears.  It rubbed me the wrong way the way they handled death, but that's more a personal issue than anything, not something I can fault the movie for.

But there were some flaws, I thought.  The movie felt like it changed styles and filmmaking techniques throughout, and there's this scene in particular where it felt like a Fight Club scene more than anything.  I still hate how movies do aged make-up; I haven't seen ANY movie that does it well, and this is no exception.  There were scenes I thought were unnecessary and motifs that I thought had do real relevance to the theme of the movie.

Great score, great art, great acting, and an interesting story, but it really felt quite forced.  7/10.

I saw it today. Like many have said .. it's a technical marvel and the nuts and bolts of the movie (cinematography, art design, costuming, acting) are at a Scorcese level of excellence. But there is a certain amount of heart that is left out of this movie. Benjamin is kind of a blank canvass .. he doesn't have that likeability or charm that Gump did, Daisy is a cold, somewhat selfish person ... you begin to wonder what Benjamin sees in her at all (considering their limited contact).  In the end, I think there was just too much time to cover in this movie. It felt like a reading the outline of book .. instead of the book itself. You get all the high points, but none of the little points that give characters nuance or makes them compassionate. So, when their paths do finally cross ... there isn't much elation to it.

A movie that just falls short of excellence.

Title: Re: i saw benjamin button last night.
Post by: Phoenix Dark on December 31, 2008, 02:39:15 AM
Saw it earlier tonight. It should have been a movie I loved, but I found it pretty average all around. I can't honestly say the pacing was shitty despite it being almost three hours, but while I never got bored I was never truly invested in the characters or story. Like Forrest Gump, Shawshank Redemption, and Big Fish it introduces a huge cast of eccentric characters yet no one is particularly interesting, and I didn't feel any emotional connection...to barely anything.

The atmosphere was great, I liked the overall themes/idea but everything that surrounded was average and reminded me of films that did this better. Brad Pitt just sleep walks through the entire movie, vacantly staring at life pass him by. In fact none of the acting sticks out except maybe the black chick who plays Pitt's mom.

It's not a bad movie. If I had to rate it I'd say 3/5 or something like that. Very disappointing. Should have been much better

I was really disappointed that the movie actually had Benjamin
spoiler (click to show/hide)
grow into an infant in the end. I know that it's the point of the movie, but I would of rather not see it. Having 20-something Pitt in one scene then a 12 year old kid in the next was too silly to see. The death of Benjamin wasn't sad or anything because it's not really him, it's just some random infant.

Clearly we're not going to agree on the movie. For whatever reason you thought the acting was good apparently, to me there was nothing good about it. What was great about the acting? Pitt doesn't have a single scene I'd consider above average

The love story doesn't work and isn't interesting either.

I think a lot of what I thought about the movie has already beensaid.  I enjoyed it, but you go in expecting so much more.  Biggest problem for me was that most of the characters in it were just plain unlikable; even Benjamin himself quickly became unlikable after the initial bits  And the ending was really dumb, but that couldn't really be avoided because of how the movie and tale was set up from the start.  All that stuff felt unneeded, and while the one reveal you got from it was good, I don't think it was worth the wasted scene or even the telling of the story.

I enjoyed it too. The only thing that I didn't like was the ending bit. It felt really forced and unnecessary.

There wasn't anything likable about him; he was just an empty canvas wandering from adventure to adventure. The movie has some pretty bells and whistles but lacks the personality; I just didn't give a fuck

it's not just that he was unlikable, it was also that was a bit of a prick.  Forrest Gump was at least a charming and pure guy; he would help people out and do his thing -- plus you couldn't hate him cuz he was mental and all.  Benjamin's life was just a culmination of weird sexual experiences.

Eh, I see more charm in Ben than I do with the stupidly cute Forrest shit.

Cate Blanchett ruins every movie she appears in.  She's just so goddamn sexy that I can't concentrate on what the hell is going on and I can never recall anything she says or any scene she's not in.

Well at least in this movie she's a cunt for a portion of the film so it doesn't matter what she's saying. Just a bunch of cunty bullshit.

I'm not even a CB fan, but that was one of the most erotic dances ever done without a stripper pole.

No. Ben has no personality. Even if you hate on Gump the film it's hard to deny that as a character he was likable and entertaining. There's nothing likable or entertaining about Button, and he's surrounded by a bunch of eccentric characters who aren't interesting either.

I'm getting dizzy without even knowing what you're talking about.  Another work day down the drain!

Benjamin Button reinforces that mental > cripple for movies...except for Sean Penn
