Title: Going to be a big brother!
Post by: mojovonio on December 28, 2008, 10:09:58 PM
Decided to apply. Feeling so bored and empty with my day to day, figured I may as well contribute some how.

Anyone ever do it?

A bunch of kids did it when I was in high school, they seemed to like it well enough.

I also applied recently to Big Brothers/Big Sisters. I was told that they were still pairing big brothers up with little brothers for the school mentoring program (which is what I would like to do), even though that is typically reserved for people who can volunteer for a full school year (I cannot as I'll graduate this May and will leave over the summer). I must have been told wrong because the woman that called me up following the interview said she'd have to get the green light from HER boss if I was going to mentor for only a semester. I'm still waiting for a call back after speaking with her.

i hate kids

They suck pretty hard. They can't even take a decent punch or a toss down the stairwell.

I always debated doing this and never did. Sounds interesting though!

Oh, and at first I thought this was going to be a post about your mother being pregnant with your little brother. I was going to ask how old you were that you have a mother young enough to still be bearing children, lol.

How old are the kids in these programs usually?

Tell us how it goes man. I love kids. If they're not brats that is.

little brothers/little sisters are kids of any type so long as they sign up. How often, I dunno.

How often and what type of kids? (like orphans?)

Usually you hang out with them once a week and the kids are identified as problematic in some way (they almost always come from underprivileged backgrounds and broken households).

Yeah, if my kid was in a big brother program, I'd probably feel guilty for being a bad parent and take it out on my kid with wykd beatings.

I've looked at this thread a twice before now, and I always thought it was about the TV show... as in you were trying to join the cast.

How do these families trust their kids with complete strangers? I mean it's not like babysitting where you're at least asked to stay in the house (and usually to be a girl) but you get to take them out, right?

With the school mentoring program at least, you don't take the kid off of the school premises. They also do an extensive criminal background check on all applicants.
