... I have spoken to Eric P about the series, but I thought I'd open it up to the few Grant Morrison and comic enthusiasts we have. I just finished volume one and it definitely feels like it's building up to something. I'm a big fan of Morrison's New X-Men run - it's what got me back into comics following the landmark Age of Apolcalypse where everyone jumped off the industry it seems. I've been told Animal Man breaks the fourth wall and to anticipate it. If it's along the lines of The Coyote Gospel, one of the issues in the first volume, I can deal with it. But if it's Mark Millar-esque douchebaggery as seen in Wanted, I think I might skip the rest.

I'd give a more detailed response, but I haven't read Wanted--dug the movie though. But if you liked The Coyote Gospel, I think you'll be able to deal with Morrison's run of Animal Man.

The movie is nothing like the book and I'd argue its better for it. Worst ending ever to boot.
I just hate self-masturbatory comic artist crap.

Does the comic take itself seriously? Some of the voiceover shit, especially towards the beginning, was emo and overwrought to the point of lolness. In the frame of the movie, it worked, but if the comic has some really meta ending, I'm curious if it was being serious.

No, it goes the totally opposite direction.
Wesley addresses the audience in the last page, as basically an avatar of Mark Millar and says:
You used to think the world was always like this, didn’t you? The wars, the famine, the terrorism, and the rigged elections.
But now you know better, right? Now you know what happened to the superheroes and you know the funny thing? You know what makes me laugh now that I’m on the other side?
You’re just going to close this book and buy something else to fill that big, empty void we’ve created in your life.
This is my face while I’m fucking you in the ass.
That's how it ends. It's total Millar douchebaggery that kind of ruins the theme of the book. And it's abrupt. It's like he didn't know how to end it. It really didn't set well with me.
