Title: Best double album?
Post by: Phoenix Dark on January 02, 2009, 04:10:24 PM: The discussion concerning Pumpkins faggatry got me thinking: what's the best double album ever? Seems like even the best candidates have their share of filler. For whatever reason The Wall is heralded as a perfect album, one of the best ever...but while it definitely has great tracks it also has some god awful filler. I love Electric Ladyland but yea, it has boring filler too.

There are few noteworthy double albums. I think Prince's Sign O' the Times might be my favorite, although it's still a mess.

Must have played each disc 500 times at least. Great for working out, playing games, anything really. Like most double disc albums, there is a little filler (esp. in Disc 2) but a lot less than one would expect for a double album.

Use Your Illusion should count, as it was a simultaneous launch. But, as a huge GnR fan, and a big fan of UYI, it's not the best double album. It's got some pretty shitty songs.

I'd say most consistent is The White Album, but that Biggie album is killer all the way through too. And I wouldn't consider The Wall as one of the best double albums, as much as I like it. It would be one of the best concept albums, as far as being realized in different mediums and telling a complete story, but it fails as a purely listenable double album. I have to be ready for a journy when I listen to The Wall.

edit: Can't count Kid A/Amnesiac as brilliant as it was. Those are definitely partner albums but there was a year in between the launches of the albums. No true double album can make you wait a year for the second half. That's a follow-up/companion album.

Filler as in bad songs just there to kill time. There's like 20-30 minutes between Mother and Comfortably Numb that could be tossed out and no one would care. Basically everything but One of My Turns (which has a stupid too long intro) and Hey You.

I like their earlier stuff most. Piper is a pretty good record. Saucerful of Secrets, Ummagumma, Atom Heart Mother (my fave), Dark Side, Meddle. I also found Wish You Were Here more boring than I recall. I think that used to be my favorite, but now, it seems too spaced out and I'm more of a concision guy these days. With that said, Animals has held up well enough, although the long songs did bug me.

It's ok when you're sitting stoned on a couch wasting the day away but it's not a great listen from front to back otherwise. It's a fantastic concept album but as a double album it's sorta fail.

I digest my Floyd mainly through 'Wish You Were Here' which is composed of five really great songs. Animals is also very listenable, as is the obvious Dark Side. If I'm feeling perky for 20 min I'll listen to Echoes, which is just an epic song even if you aren't watching 2001.

I love Floyd. Too bad I fucked up and didn't see them in 93, I'll never get that chance now.

Clash's Sandinista is about the only other triple album that I can think of off the top of my head.

edit: oh, and 69 Love Songs. And Yessongs, but that's crap.
