Apple has always been ahead of the game. You don't want to be the biggest, you want to get a dedicated base of users and milk them for every dollar you can.

Designer electronics. It's a goal that Sony has been reaching for forever.

They will get people to buy that uber-laptop and the profit on it will be far greater than churning out millions of E-machines.

Isn't Nintendo a much better example than Sony? Maybe not this generation, but for a couple there. Sony has screwed itself into the ground with the PS3. I get what you're saying though. I guess Sony just sucks at it.

Well, my example was pricing yourself into a situation where you are more expensive than the competition (but offering a comparable product) but using your brand name (and the implied social cache that it carries) as the reason for the consumer to pay more. You will never be the market leader (unless you get lucky on a hot product) but will always turn a profit.

The same concept used in the jeans, shoe industry for years.

Sony has always done that with their other electronics (televisions, etc) for years.

also, Sony fails so hard at the designer electronics thing.

also, apple fails at drm free music.  I've seen the amazon way.

Certain netbooks can run OSX pretty much perfectly.  I forget which.  I know there's some blatant issue with my EEE 1000H that prevents me from using it.  No sound driver or something like that in OSX.

Surely Linux is faster for Netbook use, though?

For what it's worth I threw it on my netbook (MSI Wind, upgraded to 2GB RAM) and the OS runs pretty good for what I do (basic Photoshop, browsing and whatnot). I also heard the Half-Life 2 OSX build runs a hell of a lot better on netbooks running OSX than it does on Crossover Linux or Windows.

Certain netbooks can run OSX pretty much perfectly.  I forget which.  I know there's some blatant issue with my EEE 1000H that prevents me from using it.  No sound driver or something like that in OSX.

That's been fixed:

Ever since the CD was invented, has Apple made any must-have hardware that impressed people only because of it's functionality?  Cause that was actually a long time ago.

I'm guessing that the only real reason for covering new Apple products is that Apple fans want to immediately find out what new shiny shit they can splooge over and so there's some ad revenue.  If this was like football, Apple would be the half-time show.

And you hadn't been so distinguished mentally-challenged lately.  Bummer onbreaking the streak, but the iPhone functionality has killed everything else out there, including the Android.  But if you want to go back a bit further, Apple was the first to have dibs on the Core line of Intel processors.  Before that?  Well, 10.4 is pretty much the only reason XP has needed to be upgraded.

Facts are facts: If you think Apple doesn't bring anything new to the table, you are pretty dumb.  They aren't perfect, and they have a bad habit of cutting corners on non-prime hardware, but the fact still stands:  Despite recent apparent improvements, am nintenho is still a distinguished mentally-challenged fellow.

For me, it's the general ease of use and productivity-friendly nature of OS X that does it. Once you get used to dragging documents to the dock apps, using exposé and stuff like that, going back to a windows environment feels very cumbersome in comparison. Also, for graphic designers and artsy assholes, I suspect the superior aesthetic qualities of OS X visavi the windows equivalents is also a factor

I was mostly interested in computer hardware but I didn't know about the Intel thing.  The iPhone was WAY overpriced considering the quick price drop and it's still a pretty niche cell phone since most people don't need data plans and web browsers.

I was mostly wondering what kind of hardware Apple made that the general public would find (technically) interesting?  Since they overprice most things, they're still a pretty niche company in the computer market which is why I'm put off by the publicity they get.  To me, it seems like we get more coverage of new Apple hardware than software.

That little Core factoid sounds fishy. 2006 Macbooks were one of the first PCs to have Core CPUs, but I don't remember any sort of exclusive thing going on, and Apple had jackshit to do with developing that technology.

Yeah, looks like I am wrong about the Core thing.  I am distinguished mentally-challenged.  I do know that comparatively speaking Apple's were kind of cheap compared to the other PCs swith the same tech.  It was Apple's first Intel chip, so I think they got them at a competetive rate.

Yeah the same for me too. I used Windows all my life, then started playing around with my boyfriend's MacBook Pro and I really loved OS X, for me I found it a lot faster, easier and nicer to use so bought myself a MacBook. Also on my PC I was constantly getting ladened down with viruses and spyware, and yes I did run regular scans and I know there are ways to get rid of particular viruses but I found it long winded and I wasn't very good at it.

yeah, I've been using PCs at home for the past 10+ years, been through 3 to 4 desktops and one laptop, and the only time I had problems was on the first computer.  It was a compaq and when the internet was confusing and new to me.  I weep every time I'm forced to use an Apple computer at the computer labs on campus.

in other news, most iphone games are still shit.  Surprisingly, the decent ones I've played (beefheart and some 2D platformer) were free--this further proves that Apple fans don't understand how money works.

seeing a lot of normally non-distinguished mentally-challenged people getting spyware through hacked ad servers lately.especially wow people using all sorts of terribad free guild hosting sites. so it's still possible though a good resident AV nowadays picks up anything and everything.

my beef with apple is the same one it's been for decades-their UIs are totally inflexible and have terrible quirks for people used to using computers in a methodical, task-driven, left-brain fashion.

Sorry we don't hide behind moderators here, princess

You have nice tits and I would bang you so hard

Oh I'm aware you don't hide behind moderators here, I just didn't think there were many genuine assholes.

If we're being honest, most of the assholes here aren't genuine.  Mostly they are pretentious douchebags  :-*

And there are random people on here who do not Vomit or Swear Loudly when they see Christian Laettner on television.

I got a Vundo trojan from Yahoo's main page (one of those featured viral vid clips, it embedded a codec that was a trojan when you clicked on it). Then got another one from a banner ad  on a Howard Stern Fan Forum.

Just two days ago, I got another one when I followed the Pat Buchanan link found on Drudge (serves me right, I guess). I was using Google Chrome and fully updated Java/etc, but it still installed itself on my computer.

Malwarebytes easily cleaned them all up ... but if I was running Adaware or Spybot (like most people do), it would have never detected them.

I like within fifteen minutes of both Duke and UNC. When I moved here it was pretty much "choose your faction", I choose Duke because their seemed to be the elitist pricks whereas UNC is full of yuppie crunchy granola types.

I did go to Free Shoes University-even shopped at the Dillards where Peter Warrick and Laverneous Coles got his cool deals-but I got the hell out of there after I graduated. Working in the same town as you went to college in is a terrible idea and I have a really nice gig that I've been at for like nine years now.

btw even when I was attending FSU I would go to gators basketball games in hogtown because it was actually fun to watch (and I had a friends with benefits arrangement with a high-school associate there), unlike FSU. Except for that time we beat Arizona, which was awesome.

Leave it to Kentucky fan to drag Duke into an argument about assholes and douchebags.  It's not like they'd want to actually discuss basketball.

edit:  In the effort of full disclosure I went to Georgia Tech.  My allegience to dook came long before I decided to study engineering.

well, in defense of the compu-nubs, if you buy an oem machine and don't immediately reformat it, you'll be stuck with a whole host of bloated, unusable, busted-ass shitware installed by the manufacturer. many of those programs are gaping security holes or memory leaks.

and don't reformat it with dell/toshiba/etc... windows discs because they are pre-installed with the same shit software.

it's kind of sad that someone would have a more secure system if they reformatted with a pirated slipstreamed copy of XP from the piratebay than they would if they did the reformat from the manufactuer's install media.

I would say that Microsoft should seriously slap on a set of guidelines for what software can be shipped with OEM machines, but that would get waaaay too much attention from the Department of Justice thanks to whiny shitty software makers who would get crowded out as a result.

I think this thread proves that we need a NCAA Basketball thread.

And yeah, whenever I buy a Netbook later on in the year, I'm totally gonna use my MSDNAA license of XP for it.

the best thing about starting up a new mac is the complete lack of oem clutter -- just a nice (albeit useless) tabula rasa.

No doubt.  I won't be posting much in a college basketball thread.  It's a nice diversion but the season is a month long.  And this ain't that month.

I'll miss the dook/fsu game this saturday while I'm getting drunk in downtown Charlotte getting ready to walk into an NFL playoff game.  That's sports in January.  Wake me in Feb and I'll talk some college ball.

TA, what?

Did you see last year's NCAA tournament? The antics of one Super Mario Chalmers ring a bell? Any team can beat anybody on any given night. I love college athletics more than just about anything in this world. Earlier during the football season, I considered quitting my job and selling blood plasma through the week just to be home on saturday.

Well, to be fair .. I guess it depends on where you live. In the 90's, the Big Ten had many good teams ... even the MAC was much more competitive. Not so much anymore. Kids stayed in school longer, so teams had more of an identity back then. The talent level is so diminished that one elite player can carry a team all the way to the final four. Back then, Shaq couldn't even get his team out of the the sweet sixteen (IIRC).

I can see why you are excited for the season since you live around teams like Kentucky, Louisville, etc.

The Big Ten is on the rise big time. Look out for Minnesota and Michigan in particular.

No, I became a dook fan when I was 10 and started having an interest in sports.  I didn't become a GT fan until I went there, much later.

It's not nearly as blasphemous as the guy I went to GT with who was and still is a fucking Georgia Bulldog fan.  He's a douchebag.

The funny thing is, Tubby Smith is a great coach, but a not-so-good recruiter. Billy G is a fucking lousy coach but a great recruiter. At least in the Tubby Smith days our OOC losses were explicable.

Lauveranous Coles is a dickwad who is going to cost 7 mil against the cap. He's not worth 1.5.

Macs suck. What the hell is it that you people browse that cause spyware+viruses? Can't be porno cause I go on one website and I basically have everything I need.

And College Basketball sucks.

As awesome as you guys think college basketball was in the 90's, you can only imagine the 80s!

Imagine someone like Patrick Ewing dominating for FOUR years!

Go back and look at the rosters of Big East teams circa 1984 and they are littered with NBA Hall of Famers.  Ewing and Sleepy Floyd at Georgetown, Chris Mullen and Mark Jackson at St Johns, the list goes on and on.  I didn't start watching college ball until 88 but just learning about the history was so fascinating.

Now we're watching a generation who didn't go to college, the Kobe's, Garnetts etc.  The one and done rule isn't going to bring back the glory days of seasoned vets dominating though.  The best players will still make only a customary appearance in the ncaa ranks, at best.  Some have started to play in Europe for a year (or you can play in the NBDL too.)  College basketball has as such been relegated to a somewhat regional sport, and definitely only matters in March.

I think that's what scares College Football, that if they move to a tournament that the regular season will be nearly as meaningless as college basketball.  That won't happen though, it will lose some of it's cache but with even an 8 team playoff people will maintain interest in the season with that few of openings.

In college basketball so many teams make the tournament, and so many teams lose their stars that it's hard to keep track of anyone but your favorite teams.  The regular season just isn't a draw for most sports fans, that's sad to me as a college basketball fan but it's the truth.
