I remember why I love/hate this show. "Let's talk about potential future action for 57 minutes". Also, WHY ARE THERE ALWAYS MOLES. ALWAYS. And the Q-Grade "character plot" about the Senator's son (LETS GUESS HOW TANGENTIALLY IT WILL APPLY TO THE PLOT) is a fucking drag.

But then, right at the end, 2 minutes of JACK BAUER and I'm hooked again.

This show also has the worst case of Fake-o Tech Jargon-itis since The 'Net: "I'm going to need to sync up the Q Wave Generator with a Triangulation of X Chords vis a vis the FRU Firewall". "Okay".
Title: Re: 24 Season 7 starts TONIGHT
Post by: Bloodwake on January 12, 2009, 01:21:25 PM
I think they are treating the mole a little differently this time. For one, I'm pretty sure they are treating it as if Jack is the audience.

Jack: There's a mole, we have to find it
Fembauer: No, there isn't.
Jack: Well, here's your proof, bitch. Trust me, I've been through six seasons of moles.
Fembauer: Oh.

Second of all, the plot looks much more structured this season. Again, its the first four episodes of the season, but I have this feeling that something in these first two episodes may show up again in the end and completely shock the fuck out of the audience.

It's no surprise that people don't like these first episodes on GAF/EB. I believe that some people just want to fucking hate shit without giving it a chance. There's at least three satisfied customers in this thread.

And honestly, moles are 24 trademarks. Did you seriously think they were going away? At least they are giving us the moles in the first two fucking hours rather than later in the season. This logically means that they are probably going to go away from moles later in the season and not concentrate on the plot device.

My only real complaint is that Tony got captured WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY too early. However, since he "died" because of an overdose of the torture drug, it's going to make the interrogation really interesting.

but the premieres have always been great. even season 6 premiere was fantastic. you have to wait until the episodes after the first four to get the real feel for how the season is going to go.

I tried explaining to my brother why I like 24. He liked the first three seasons but feels there's no point in continuing to watch it considering each season basically uses the same diagram, just filling it in differently. Meh, I like the atmosphere, I like the characters, I like the political intrigue. Especially in S6, which I admit is repetitive even in the political arc but all the White House drama is interesting. Well except this most recent thing with the VP's aide...

Jack isn't the most complex TV character but he doesn't need to be. He performs extra-ordinary feats to save his country time and time again while in the process being stripped of his humanity. As Heller just told him in the last episode I saw, everyone he forms a relationship winds up dead or worse. The series can't go on forever, and eventually the writers are going to have to realize there is no salvation or redemption for Jack. He can't honestly walk into the horizon after another day is saved. He has to die eventually

Not only was season 6's premiere fantastic, but it was one of the better premieres in show history. That's why it was sad that the season was disappointing overall.

Well I really liked the first two hours.  I'm sure the second two hours will be good, since they usually are.  We'll see how it goes from there, but I don't know how much I trust these guys anymore to make a 24-episode story that makes any kind of sense.

And PD, did you mean the President?  Do we even know who the VP is?

I do trust them. Here's why: It's much less difficult to produce a television show with a coherent plot when you have a year to write all of the episodes as well as film them.

There's two things that worry me:

1. Brennan Braga

2. The writers' tendencies to spend half the season building up to a major event, only to completely disregard said event.  I want one consistent, coherent plot that runs through the entire season, please, with as few moles, fake-outs, and last-minute reveals as possible.

But they showed some restraint in using these elements in the earlier, better seasons.  They've been trying to top Nina ever since, mostly unsuccessfully.  I want them to simplify things.  Bigger, better, and more is not always better.  Make the threat smaller and more personal and get to know the victims better (like a bus instead of a whole city, or even a single person if done right, like season one).

The best thing they could ever do is cut the season down to 12 or 18 episodes, but then you lose half of the gimmick and considerable ad dollars, so Fox will never do it.  Even in the best seasons, there's too much filler.

It's too early to judge, but yeah, that's what made season one the best. Can't fucking wait for tonight.

The problem with any TV show that isn't an HBO series or Mad Men is the fact that there is always going to be filler. Always. Anything on broadcast television will be subjected to filler.

Except seasons 4-6 of Lost, which are being produced more along the lines of a cable TV show.  And broadcast TV is dying anyway...they might as well try something new.

With 24 episodes it's hard to not have filler. S4 of Lost have what, 14 episodes or something like that. It was very well done and tight. Fewer episodes would definitely help the show but it's unlikely due to the real time nature of it, plus the name itself

I was about to mention Lost as one that had any filler, but even people on GAF were groaning about filler in Season 4. Although they proved they were stupid when the "filler" episode they complained about the most was The Constant, my personal favorite episode in Lost history. And DAMN, does that show look good in HD (as evident by the blu-rays)

Plus, the problem with not having filler in 24 is that there are always going to be slower parts of the day in real life. I know, we are talking about 24 and realism has no place in a 24 conversation, but action packed shit and epic plot twists aren't going to happen every hour of even an eventful day.

Not only was that episode one of the best episodes of any TV show I've ever seen, but it was ESSENTIAL, not only for character development, but also for the main plot.  What idiots claimed that was filler?!?  GAF has terrible taste 98% of the time.

Quote
Plus, the problem with not having filler in 24 is that there are always going to be slower parts of the day in real life. I know, we are talking about 24 and realism has no place in a 24 conversation, but action packed shit and epic plot twists aren't going to happen every hour of even an eventful day.

But every episode is already usually "slower parts" where people are talking, driving, or typing feverishly on the computer.  Plus you've got 18 minutes every hour that we don't even get to see.  Plus, "24" and "real life" never, ever belong together in the same sentence :)

I don't know, but after watching The Constant (had to watch it online last year due to lack of cable and TV antenna at the time) I pretty much quit listening to anyone who claimed to like Lost on GAF. I truly believe that they aren't satisfied unless they drop a megaton every episode that explains half the shit. Half the appeal of Lost is how slow they reveal shit. We still don't know why

Jack's dad is running around after he supposedly died

and that's been an issue since episode 3 of Season 1.

Dumbass fucking GAF.

I'm not disagreeing that filler can be annoying in 24. For instance: FUCK THE FUCKING COUGAR BULLSHIT IN SEASON 2. Even Season 6's horrible filler was better than the fucking cougar. The cougar chasing Kim is 24 visual language for "we have absolutely no fucking idea what to do with this character until Jack gets on the plane with Mason"

Season 6 was just a complete breakdown with the writers. The fans didn't like what they were producing, and they were forced to change the show throughout the season from an original plan to a shitty plan to adapt with little to no feedback beforehand on how the audience was going to take it.

So you want a 24 show without the elements that make it 24? Moles, fake-outs, and last-minute reveals are a trademark of the show.

What you call "trademarks", I call the show getting stale.

I actually need more than Jack kicking ass.  I need a compelling reason for Jack to kick ass.  I need characters I care about.  I simply did not give a shit during the two hour premiere.  President Clinton yapping.....could have put me to sleep.  Colm Feore's little quest...couldn't be bothered to care.  FBI crew and Fembauer?  Didn't seem the least bit compelling.  Even Zombie Tony didn't seem to be compelling, and I have a nagging suspicion that they will not satisfactorily explain his false death, or even his motivations for being a villain.  I certainly am not yet convinced of Tony-as-bad-guy.  He seemed to be little more than a disgruntled henchman here.

I think the best part of the episode was the opening two minutes, with Jack being grilled by the Senator.  I think that scene is indicative of failed/lost potential.  I wanted more of that.  I wanted more of that potential critical perspective of all the ass-kicking that CTU has done over the years.  That premise held the potential for more personal drama, and for this season of 24 to contain more than Jack kicking random terrorist ass.  But it seemed that after a minute and a half the writers said "okay, enough of that, onto our standard fare."

I'll watch tonight's two episodes, but unless something really wow's me, that might be the end of 24 for me. Too bad.

PARDON ME GOOD SIRS BUT I WILL OVERHYPE WHAT I PLEASE, KINDLY FUCK OFF.

That aside, I do like this.  I could do without the mole, since CTU is gone and things have "changed", but whatever I'm cool with it as long as it turns out good.  Also, T minus fuck you for new eps.

Hell honestly they aren't even trying; often the mole is immediately revealed to the viewer, and the next few episodes feature everyone trying to find out.

The writers should get together before every season with a big board where they write the overall rules for the season: no moles, no family members/boyfriends/girlfriends getting compromised, no "Jack's gone rogue" moments, etc

I finished S6 last night and I gotta say...it wasn't bad. Sure the repetitive bullshit was grating, all the CTU stuff was annoying etc...but the show has its hook so far up my ass that it's hard to quit. The last few episodes were great, especially Jack's confrontation with Heller. And how can anyone hate on the helicopter/oil rig/F16 action scene  :lol

I'm watching Redemption as I type. Little kids dying within 30min=SOLD :bow

First two episodes of S7: alright, some good and meh. So far this season opening doesn't compare to the previous ones. That being said I like the White House stuff, kinda indifferent on the FBI stuff, and I'm interested in this First Man drama. I hope to god the girlfriend wasn't involved, and the first man is just going crazy; that would be far more interesting than finding out she's some agent.

Jack got a silent clock at the end of season 6
as did Palmer at the end of season 2
also Mason got a silent clock during season 2 as well before the episode that he died in.

and also the actress is signed on to all 24 episodes.

Yea, that last shot was pretty awesome. Killing her off early wouldn't make any sense. 24 really shot their load with the massive amounts of deaths in previous seasons. Now I'm left with two old characters I care about (Jack and Tony) and two I like (Buchanan and Chloe).

And the writers still seem to think character drama=bad bosses, marital affairs, and find-a-mole. I just don't care about the FBI stuff. Janice seems cool but like I said, she's basically a nicer Chloe. I would have loved to see a side story introducing us to the African fighters on the ground, waiting for US intervention. That would be compelling drama. They could have shot it while they were there doing Redemption

They have enough boring sub-plots as it is. Anyway, the writers don't write that far in advance; if they change the plot, all that African footage might end up being useless.

epic bump

Last two episodes were good overall. There were some bad parts, especially in ep 23 with the whole Kim-on-fire and airport shootout. But overall I was impressed, and quite happy the show didn't go for pure shock; I reallly expected Ethan's car to explode, or for him to die in some form.

The ending of the Tony story was expected, and satisfying. He's not a good guy, he's not totally a bad guy. This was the most logical avenue to take him, and people complaining about him switching to "a good guy" don't know what they're talking about. I wonder if he'll be working with the FBI/CTU to bring down the patriot organization.

I thought the first couple episodes were a little meh, but it didn't take long for things to get awesome. Like many have said, the first half of the season is amazing. The second half wasn't bad, it just slowed down. Really there were only a couple "bad" episodes. But...it's hard to compete with the first half, from Renee getting fake killed to the WH invasion. They saved the best for the last couple episodes though. I'm very, very excited for S8. There are so many ways it could go...the possibilities are endless

Also I gotta say damn, I wonder how some conservative folks felt about this season. From the anti-torture stuff to stem cells to Jack confessing to a Muslim  :lol

Another solid season. Not the best, but I'd say it's closer to the top tier seasons than the bottom tier seasons.

S1>S5>S3>S2>S4>S7>S6

imo S6 wasn't nearly as horrible as people claim. The first 4 episodes are amazing, but really the first half of the season is good. Things do slow down, but the last 4 episodes are great, and it has one of the best finales in the show's history

Bottom Tier: S6
(but you're still right)

I've realized I'm a complete sucker for the show.

How is he not a bad guy? He killed many innocent people--and tried to kill thousands more--simply to exact revenge.

Also I gotta say damn, I wonder how some conservative folks felt about this season. From the anti-torture stuff to stem cells to Jack confessing to a Muslim  :lol

The last half-hour seemed like a clumsy attempt to distance the show from the Bush administration. This was particularly event in three eye rollin' scenes: (1) Jack's discussion with Walker in which he expressed regret for his past actions; (2) President Taylor's repeated reference to the sanctity of Constitution (right, that's the first thing that comes to mind when you daughter is about to face life in jail); (3) Jack's request to see an Imam that he met for five minutes on his death bed (somehow religion never came up).

"Bad guy" and "good guy" terms don't seem to fit well with Tony's situation here. He's a terrorist who killed innocent people, which makes him a bad guy in general. Me and other folks are just pointing out that he's not involved in any particular bad guy group, and instead has worked to dismantle it.

Which makes me very interested in what they do with him in S8.

I thought the last two scenes you mentioned were good. The president was just saying her decision was based on her duty to uphold the constitution; it wasn't the first thing she thought of either, considering the long emotional scene with Olivia and Mr. Taylor (who came off as a total douche, and quite different than his portrayal in previous episodes).

I liked the Imam scene, and I thought it did what Jack's scene with Renee failed to do. The first scene with the Imam (a few episodes ago) was great imo, and the scene in the finale was a nice conclusion.

Ah I forgot to talk much about Renee. Early on in the season it was pretty clear she would slowly "become" Bauer. Too bad the cliffhanger means we can't totally validate that theory yet.

So Tony needs to be involved in a group in order to be a bad person? And he had no interest in dismantling the secret organization. He was only trying to kill Wilson, which would actually allow the organization to survive.

President Taylor said that repeatedly throughout Day 7 regarding every single decision she made. Obviously, in that situation, she has to decide whether she will continue following the rule of law or protect her daughter. But she simply glosses over the dilemma and repeats the same phrase over and over again: "I swore to uphold the Constitution." Great zzzz.  The constant repetition is what got to me and it was clearly didactic. The writers and producers were showing the audience how a president should behave: upholding the Constitution even at great personal cost unlike the previous president--who they tacitly supported.

Great, I didn't need the message.

I liked the Imam scene, and I thought it did what Jack's scene with Renee failed to do. The first scene with the Imam (a few episodes ago) was great imo, and the scene in the finale was a nice conclusion.

Why would a man who showed no religious beliefs ask an Imam he barely knows to talk to him on his death bed?
And how believable is it that a Imam, or any other religious leader, would not try for a death bed conversion?

Here's my rating:  ::) (a drugged and nearly dead Jack in handcuffs managed to kill three men in under ten seconds. Then, while shaking worse than Michael J Fox, he managed to immobilize Tony by purposely shooting him in the hand.)

admittedly, I'm a distinguished mentally-challenged fellow for demanding plausibility from this show.
Title: Re: 24 Season 7: The Thread. Spoilers are rampant and untagged.
Post by: Phoenix Dark on May 20, 2009, 02:25:15 AM
I didn't say that. I'm merely saying that any switch Tony had was a double cross of both groups (the "good guys" and "bad guys" in the series). Some folks on GAF and a few of my buddies have complained he switched to being a good guy again, which simply isn't true. Saying he's not totally a bad guy merely points out he wasn't working FOR the patriots or whatever they're name is.

The entire president thing reminded me of S1 when Sherry wanted to destroy the tape that proved their son was innocent. And while I agree with your main point, I still think you're wrong about

Quote
(2) President Taylor's repeated reference to the sanctity of Constitution (right, that's the first thing that comes to mind when you daughter is about to face life in jail);

As I pointed out, that was not the case; she did not dwell on the constitutional issues first.

To me the Imam thing was more about Jack recognizing the error of his ways and wanting to make amends. Cheesy? Sure
