I'll probably end up seeing the 3D remake sometime next week, but I don't want the remake to ruin the first one for me too much.
Is the original Bloody Valentine worth watching? My understanding is that its only merit is that it's just ridiculously gory for its time -- is that right? There's nothing else worthy of praise or note in the film, unlike other competent early-era slasher films? If there's nothing to mind-blowing about the 1981 version, I don't really care if I end up seeing the new 3D one beforehand.

Oh I thought you meant the band. YES, you should see them if they come to your town.
-
when did you crawl out of OA?

It's an R rated horror film in 3d. Why the heck not?
-
Theres the possibility of 3d boobs so I would definitely go.

good news, the first one sucks and is stupid anyway

Yeah the first movie was just your average 80's slasher. The remake isn't really desecrating anything sacred. Plus when was the last time we had a wide release 3d horror film? Probably not since Freddy's Dead, and even that was in the old red and blue.

We're taking about the movie, dummy!
I'm definitely going to see it.

The original was horrible and not very gory.

Supposedly the DVD re-release restores a bunch of gore that the original film did not have.....but if gore is all it has to offer then I'm not particularly interested. Halloween had like no gore at all -- it seems so strange that the genre it spawned eventually became about nothing but gore.

Did you see the original? I know you are the resident slasher guru.

I saw it once when I was a teenager. It wasn't very memorable - I don't know how it has maintained its cult status. There are a few good elements and some of the genre staples (omg the REAL murderer is NOT THIS HORRIBLE LEGEND BUT RATHER A SUPPORTING CHARACTER!) have been said to come from the production.
Yeah, the genre evolved to just pure shock, because teenagers like sex and violence. The original Halloween is an exercise in tension, everything else is just sex and violence!

i was about to accuse you of being disingenuous but then i had to stop and think about counter examples and i really couldn't
i really dislike the slasher genre.

It's a guilty pleasure of mine. I'm so addicted to it. Not because I find it totally compelling - usually quite the opposite, since so much of it is boring trash! But ever since Halloween, I feel like I'm searching for the next Halloween and that one day, I will find that magickal flick. It's out there and until I find it, I will be like a lost Jew wandering the desert in search for the holy land.
