Title: Ringing in my ear after a night of loud music
Post by: Loki on January 18, 2009, 04:58:32 PM
I'm sure this has happened to people before.  I went out last night, and our table happened to be situated 10 feet away from one of the main speakers in the club.  I was only there for about two and a half hours, but the ringing in my right ear (the ear that was facing the speaker more often than not) is still there 15 hours after the fact.

Basically, I want to know if anyone else has experienced anything like this of a similar/longer duration, and if so, how it worked out.  I know it wasn't a smart move to stay so close to the speaker (and the music was unbelievably loud, not normal club loud; we were all commenting about it), but it's not one of those things you think about in the moment.  Some quick googling suggested that I consult my doctor if the ringing persists for more than 12-16 hours, so I guess I'll call him tomorrow when he's in if it's still an issue (I'd call him now, but I'm pretty sure there's nothing they can do for this based on my reading).  It seems like it's gotten better some, but it's still noticeable.  It isn't affecting my hearing in that ear.  I'm just a bit (or more) worried.

lol, ever been to a concert before?  my ears were ringing for tow or three days after an all day festival once.  I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I would give it two days before you waste money on a doctor. I was right by the speakers at a Dragonforce concert a year or two ago and I couldnt hear shit and my ears were still ringing at work the next day. Day after that things still sounded a little muffled... came right after 2-3 days

I'm not a big concert person, but for the ones I've been to I've never been nearly that close to the speakers.  I was literally 10-15 fet away from one of the main speakers for 2-3 hours, with my right ear facing it.  That's why I'm concerned.  It's comforting to know that others have had similar experiences that lasted at least as long.  Is your hearing fine now?

Probably some damage, but hey, you'll live.

sometimes i have a hard time hearing things clearly (mostly speech), but I chalk that up to thousand of hours of music played at ear-shattering levels.  you'll be fine

There's always freak occurances where a short amount of time can do long-term damage .. but mostly it's repeatedly stressing the ears over the course of years. Even low level noise (headphones, working in a factory, etc) over a long period of time is more likely to cause damage.

It happens, it'll stop after a day or so. I used to take my ear plugs out when I was playing shows, the music was so loud. But it would get me into the music even more and make me more active on stage. But the problem is always the constant ringing after wards.

"You know that ringing in your ears? That 'eeeeeeeeeeeeeee'? That's the sound of the ear cells dying, like their swan song. Once it's gone you'll never hear that frequency again. Enjoy it while it lasts."

LOL @ the exchange between Positive Touch and Propagandhim. :lol

Thanks for the responses, all.  It's gotten noticeably better the last few hours, though it's still there.
