I'm going to avoid this question by bringing up THE FACT that Green Day totally sort of sampled off of this song and used it on Holiday.

I'll always have a soft spot for the Iggy Pop version. The other just doesn't get me going.

The Siouxsie and the Banshees version is better, but you probably knew I'd say that.  I am enough of a gothofag to say that I prefer the Bauhaus version of Ziggy Stardust (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6a_YQXFs7Ts) to the original.

As for Iggy's Passenger, what the fuck is with that horrifying backing vocal that pipes in during the LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA part?  It's simultaneously obnoxious and frightening -- it sounds like a drunken mental patient undergoing shock therapy.  I swear I don't remember it being there when I first heard the song so many years ago.  If there is a version that excludes or mutes that part, I'd probably rate the two versions pretty even.  

Most music fans would probably say the Siouxsie version is too over-produced with the horns and the bells and the more harmonized vocals, but I think the horns in particular make it pleasantly reminiscent of Oingo Bongo.

God dammit TVC, this is hard. I just might have to give the edge to the Banshees, their version is just more "fun."

I'm not a fan of the horns.  Those are really my only complaint.

As far as Bauhaus' Ziggy, it was far too much of a literal take on the original that it didn't leave much of a mark on me.  Their cover of Eno's Third Uncle is absolutely incredible though.

The Banshees are totally a singles band to me, though.  I love basically all of their singles, but I can't get into the records, really.

That's David Bowie. :-\  Also my least favorite part of the song, but he only does it really obnoxiously the first time it's sung.  That might be why you don't remember it.
