The original bubble bobble was awesome and is still awesome.  But it's one of those games you can't really make again and have it be different but still good.  Plus it's on Wii, so good chance it will be trash.

I will remain skeptical. If it's a gussied up tribute to the original arcade with online multiplayer (yeah right) then awesome, but if it's anything like BBEvolutions on the PSP then I'm staying the fuck away.

some one i know said his friend was working on the X360 version a while back, but yeah.... probably canceled as Sega hate money.

It started out as a 360 exclusive, but then got moved to the PS3.

Maybe that's what he was doing?

Looks like bitter sfags at GAF were bandying VC for 360 about after having ToV pulled out from underneath them.

Are you supporting the wii?

I am waiting for the XBLA version.
While waiting, I might buy the Wii version.

Hey Groo btw I never told you my Otomedius story:

I tried playing it at an arcade and the game was AWFUL.  Like I got to the end of the 2nd level and I just got up and walked away from the machine because I was beyond bored.  Obviously this lessened my interest in picking up the X360 version.  But then a week or so later I figured you liked it so much I might as well pick it up for <4000yen if i found it.

So then I tried the X360 version.  Played the arcade mode and the game still sucked and was boring as hell.  Then I tried the X360 mode and omgwtfyes it was a completely different game and GOOD.  Suddenly it was the next Parodius title to match the quality of great looking/playing Gradius V.  Getting rid of the awful shield meter makes the game SO MUCH BETTER.  Having to earn your shield and only getting it for 1 hit makes dodging things intense.  Game looks pretty nice too in HD widescreen.  So yeah, I like the game and Raiden IV also seems really good and intense (I was afraid because even though I LOVE the Aces collection [shmup of the year 2008], Raiden III was soooooo boring and dull).  X360 shmup library is continuing domination.  Those Cave games just need a date.  I played Death Smiles at the arcades and it was so so awesome.  Need that ASAP.

Otomedius arcade is a very casual and easy game on the default difficulty level.  Ramp it up on the mission select screen and the game becomes much more intense.

I always see people who complain about Otomedius, but these are people who play one game without the E-Amusement pass and just mess around without really understanding the game.  Otomedius can be a very exciting and deep shooter if you keep at it, unlock the weapons, and use the higher difficulties.

Although, most people these days just play versus mode, which is awesome.

Too much effort.  The whole point of the shmup genre is to just pick up and play and be extremely entertained and engaged.  All the good shmups give you intense rewarding experiences from the minute you put your coin in.  Why does Otomedius get a free pass?  It takes 60 hours to get good doesn't work for shmups.

Like I said the Gorgeous mode fixes that a bunch by being 1 hit death.
Title: Re: All bets are off: Bubble Bobble Wii
Post by: bork on January 22, 2009, 11:48:51 PM
Bebpo, I liked Gorgeous mode at first, but once you unlock the difficulties and weapons, arcade mode is way more fulfilling.

Definitely, and this works great for the home version, but I wouldn't (and didn't) want to waste all that time and money getting there in the arcade version.  My biggest gripe about Otomedius is how generally dull the level design is.  The Parodius games do it so much better.

Lyte Edge, shit sound, shit graphics. boo.

Really?  I always thought it looked and sounded good...never had a problem with it.  Same with the Master System version.  But it has been that long.

Eh, it's like a whole different game if you change the difficulty on the map screen.  It's very intense and rewarding if you bother spending a few rounds with it.  Plus, versus mode, play it and you'll realize why the game is so popular.

You want to know why Otomedius gets a "free pass"?  It's what people want.  It's a very casual shooter so anyone can play it without being annihilated in the first round, which causes them to get frustrated and not play anymore.  It has a collection aspect so people have incentive to keep playing, other than the obsessive "1cc crowd".  They didn't forget the hardcore players though, with the higher difficulties being quite challenging, and versus mode for close competition with other players.  It's a new direction for shooters, something that needs to be done to make them relevant in the public eye again, instead of those who just obsess over scores and avoiding beautiful bullet streams.

Otomedius is the most popular shooter in arcades in a long time.  Arcades which have no shooting games have Otomedius cabinets with people playing them.  It was voted the best new idea in the Arcadia Awards 2008.  The 360 port sold extremely well for the genre.  It's a new direction the genre might be taking soon (especially with games like Death Smiles being much more n00b friendly, Cave has already announced a sequel to it).

OK, so it's got several modes:

-Standard Map: The classic game, for up to two players.
-Arrange Map: New(?) maps, for up to four players!
-Super Standard Map: The same classic maps, but with harder enemies.  The first few maps I tried had the same enemy type; they were a little more aggressive and can shoot fireballs.
-Super Arrange Map: I assume it's like the above.
-Expert Map-1: This is DLC for 200 points.  Appears to be up now.
-Expert Map-2: Ditto, but I don't think it's available yet.

You can choose to play these modes in either Play Mode or Ranking Mode.  The Rankings have listings for Japan and Worldwide, so that confirms an English release.

The game's graphics are decent enough.  Maps are 2D, player and enemies are 3D and animated decently at best.  I'm not too sure about the jump animations though.  You get the classic Bubble Bobble theme in the standard map modes and a new(?) theme in the arrange maps.

Seems pretty good to me so far.
