I think she was just a few years older than Larry Harvey.  They did a lot with makeup on her, and there's this creepy incestuous chemistry they have on-screen.

No.  There's just a tense incestuous tone going on, IIRC.  I kinda liked the remake, even though if it was a bit unnecessary and way too obvious and librully.  Meryl Streep awesomely chews scenery in it, but that's kind of expected.
