Looks like this is coming to the 360 this week. It's supposed to contain both the original R-Type I&II and the shiny 3d remake. I wish they would have reworked the original and made a widescreen version of that too. I've always found the Giger inspired pixel art for this series rather good.
Looks fine in 3d, but I would have preferred a less shiny look for something grittier. Either way it's going to look nice on a good HD screen. :drool
-
Will buy
Are you sure the original look isn't also widescreen? You can switch between the two styles on the fly, it'd be weird for the aspect ratio to change.
-
You know, I've never seen an actual R-Type arcade machine so maybe the aspect ratio is wider than that of the console versions. There's been quite a few of arcade shmups with wide aspect ratios (some insanely wide) so R-Type could be one of them.
EDIT: Arcade aspect ratio was 384 x 256.
-
Ouch $15??
I have to decide if the co-op is worth the $9 premium over the PSN version of R-Types (which I didn't know was out until now)
-
$15? Nothx.
-
Seems like this is in widescreen.
"And so, after years of work, R-Type Dimensions is nearing release. The package contains both R-Type and R-Type II, both with completely reworked visuals. There is now an option for on-the-fly swapping between the original, classic 2D graphics and the all-new 3D look. Just hit a button and you can move back and forth from one look to the other without pausing the game -- a first for the Live Arcade."
-
best shmup EVER. i'd pay $150 for this and piss your fat dumb mouths
-
1200 points is a bit rough.
-
Maybe, I have like 1700 points rotting away and XBLA library is just so shit to consider buying anything, that diamond in a lump of shit sounds good right about now

Here's some of the game's features:
* Classic arcade action: R-Type Dimensions includes R-Type and R-Type II, two fully playable classic coin-op games.
* Multiple game modes: Try the Classic game mode with play that exactly mimics the original coin-op experiences, or the all-new Infinite game mode, assuring the completion of your game regardless of skill level. Either mode offers both single player and all-new co-op play (both local and over Xbox LIVE). Switch on-the-fly between 2-D and 3-D graphic modes even during play.
* Crazy camera: Play from a non-orthogonal camera view, adding a whole new perspective.
* Cooperative play: New cooperative play uses a simple yet thrilling revive system, and a ship collision feature that can be turned on for added difficulty and sparring.
* New features: The new stage unlock functionality allows you to have immediate access to your favorite stages, and the new Continue option lets you restart from the last accessed checkpoint when the game's over.
The new camera perspective sounds like it could be interesting.

Switch is shown in this trailer:

I'm def getting this or R-Types this week, I will try the demo before I decide.
-
Looks good. Might pick it up, but I think I will stay poor until SFIV week. Maybe buy this in a few months when it drops to 800points.
-
800 or bust. I already have 1 which I can't beat anyways. :'(
-
R-Type is a game among games, I remember spending hours on the Gameboy Color remakes way back in the day. Damn right I'll be picking this one up, $15 is nothing for what I would have bought if it was a full disc release on the PS2.
-
Who am I kidding, I'm gonna get it.
-
I am so buying this.
like it will be available in Japan :-*

Hell, the game was announced at TGS.
-
i am playing the trial now
switching between 2d/3d with the y button is worth 1200 points alone
-
1200 points...
-
eh, really can't see the point of replacing pristine r type pixel art with 3d, though the 3d's done pretty well for what it is. maybe i'd buy it for $10
-
yeah i really love the look. 800 points it would be such an easy decision.
-
Really? 5 USD makes that much difference to you guys?
-
it's not about 5 dollars, i'm just to lazy to buy a prepaid card or deposit money in my bank account.
-
The game just got put up. If you're an R-Type fan then I say it's worth the mere $15. The classic game is able to go widescreen and looks really clean and good on an HD screen. No filters or soft looking pixels. The 3d actually looks pretty good in motion and is very sharp and vibrant. It's kinda cool to be able to switch back and forth between styles on the fly.
The tilted camera mode is kind interesting but I personally won't play the game that way. It's too disorienting to dodge bullets. Still it's cool that they included something like that. Multiplayer is online but I haven't had a chance to mess with that yet. The game also rewards you with gamerpics if you complete certain stages. There's also good amount of options available too. One of which adds different kinds of pixel filters to the 3d effects.
The game is pretty much the same as it always was. Even without the 3d option the clean widescreen mode of the classic versions is the best looking port of R-Type period.
Current High Score (Classic Arcade)- 74,700
-
Oh, what I would have given for a remixed soundtrack. It's cool to have the original music, but an arranged option would have been so nice! The remix of the first stage in R-Type 3 was all sorts of sick.
-
This is a pretty nice conversion. Lots of options both gameplay/graphics-wise.
When I got to level 2 in R-type I realized I'd never actually made it past level 1 in the arcade, lol. I played Delta and Final, but I guess I never played R-type 1 or 2 outside of occasionally at the arcades and never made it anywhere those times. This should be fun!
I've been really happy with the portings of classic shmups to X360 lately. Japanese developers seem to be putting a lot of love and care into their X360 ports and loading them with all kinds of graphical filter options so the player can decide how authentic he/she wants it to be. Same with tons of gameplay options allowing old school difficulty or allowing the player to actually SEE ALL THE LEVELS if they choose :P It's much better than the early days of X360/PS3/Wii/PSP where companies were just rom dumping stuff in emus (although they're still doing that on the PSP too often :yuck )
Also I realized considering how many shmups I now have on the X360, I need to buy a new controller with an actual working d-pad. I have an arcade stick but I've never been a fan of sticks for shmups. I play all my PS2 shmups on the DS2 d-pad. I think I might grab one of those madcatz SFIV X360 pads specifically for shmups.
-
i played the demo and i think it's worth the $15 for any shmup fan. there's enough options and it's practically a complete makeover. i'll be picking up this tonight for sure. i've spent $20 bucks on worse.
-
kinda mixed reactions, here, as an r-type fanboy: r-type 2 has been made easier on its classic setting; the r-type 1 stage three boss has either been given more hp on its weak spot or the collision box is massively reduced (you should be able to one shot it and i haven't yet), and the arc on the red powerup gun is slightly reduced. still a really good effort all around, and it's sad to see how my r-type skillz have diminished -- i only got to the stage 4 boss on my r-type 1 attempt :(
-
Got it, rox my sox
Multi is great, the graphics are great, achievements look fun and challenging
-
This game is pretty rough. I thought it was just a 3D remake, but I didnt know it had a HD 2D version.
-
Some HD pixel art would have been glorious, but it looks pretty nice.
-
finally got around to dling the demo and wow this game rocks. im definitly gonna be buying it
:bow press Y to switch between classic and 3d :bow2
:bow infinite lives :bow2
-
DL'ing the demo now. It better be good, fuckers.
Edit: This game bored the fuck out of me
-
man, they really botched the radius for force attachment -- it hooks up even when you're a fair ways away
really annoying on stage 6
-
Finally made it to stage 4 in one credit. Taking out the core of the fortress really does seem to take longer than what I remember. Current high 219,500 rank 685. :-\

Haven't gotten the game yet, but is it botched even in old school graphics mode? :'(
-
dunno, i will check
-
The one thing this release is missing is the ability to download replays of people on the leaderboards like some of the other X360 shmups. I'm really crap at R-type and I'd like to watch some super play replays to get the hang of it.
-
yeah, replays would fuckin rule
-
R-Type I no items run

Seems like all the bosses have received some sort of health increase. Probably done just to make it more challenging.
-
it always did go down in two beam shots
-
I gotta say, some of the stages in both games are pretty insane. I'm not a multi-tasker so I mainly stick to shmups where all I have to pay attention to are the bullets coming from ahead of me like Cave games or the Raiden games. Some of the later R-type I & II stages where you are dodging not only bullets from every direction, but enemies flying ALL OVER THE SCREEN from every direction AND the environment coming at you cause my brain to explode.
-
the stage 5 boss' pods now take more than a half-charge shot; the same with the stage 7 boss' turret on the ground
lame
it was an elegantly balanced game before
and MAN the busted force pod reconnect distance really makes me RAGE
-
Having second thoughts about buying this game thanks to drinky.
-
at least try the demo for the ridiculous camera options
-
yeah, the camera transitions look ace
they shoulda just updated delta into hd

It depends. If you're hardcore into R-Type like Drinky is, then yes, you will notice the changes. As a casual R-Type player I didn't notice anything until he and the others started pointing it out. I'm still enjoying the hell out of it though, and haven't come across anything yet that seems cheap or out of place. I say it's still worth your time if you like R-Type. There's just enough there to warrant a repurchase.
-
I got the achievement for using charge shot only. I think the rapid-fire/no powerups one will be too hard.
Dcharlie, did you get the co op ones yet?
-
Did the beam achievement yesterday also. Here's a good thread with tips for Dare Devil. http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/showthread.php?t=123909 I tried yesterday but no cigar.
-
I think Im going to get this, Ive only played level 1 of R-Type 1 on the Master System. Im pretty keen to play a shooter.
Will I be blown away by this shit guys? Sell me on this one

Being blown away is up to you. Go into it expecting a good old fashion shmup with a solid art direction and a nifty 3d -2d effect then you might come away liking it. Also going into it for the sole purpose of experiencing the shmup that pretty much influenced a majority of shooters out there helps too. The demo is there so check it out. If you like the first stage the later ones are far better.
-
yeah got the trial dling now, will give it a whirl

what luck you have, because the demo is exactly level 1 of R-Type 1!!!!!
-
lol, I did play it in like 1994 so a refresher might be good
-
and will I be able to get the achievements? I got 200/200 in Omega V and can 2cc Ikaruga on a good day
-
theres gay co-op achievements, but they should easily be doable
-
played trial for 2 minutes, game owns, its bought :D
