2% here. between this and killzone 2 demo it's going to be an awesome troll day
edit: 11%! might get to play this tonight
-
the controls for this are actually quite good
-
How many MB?
-
I heard good things.
-
1.4 GB :o

1.4 GB :o
Hmm,i don't have gold,so i will wait until its on interwebz.
-
Going really slowly here, and I thought I was being clever grabbing it in the morning before heading off to my job.

Just enable background downloading, turn your system off, and it will finish downloading and then finish powering down your 360.
-
I got up this morning and my router is bricked :maf great timing linksys!
does the game have much base building or is it more attack focused?
-
GotG :o
As far as I know you get one base area and you just attach modules to it to build the different types of units.
-
i'll check it out
will delete the RE5 demo to make space
-
Ive seen the picks, it looked alot like CnC Red Alert on Xbox. Dling now though
-
Game is awesome, buying
-
yeah, the demo was pretty fun. Keeping my preorder.
-
CG cutscenes look hot.
But then i had to build a base and make marines and I shut it off. I just don't like RTS. I don't want to build bases and units. Something like CoH I might like, but I need it dumbed down like CivRev.

You wouldn't like CoH at all.
-
I hate RTS, but I like Halo and its music/worldview/art quite a bit.
Had fun with the demo. If I can play on easy so even someone who sucks at RTS can beat the game no problem I might play through it for the story.
-
RTS isn't for me either, but I like Halo. And while this has some nice touches, it's still a real-time strategy game, and it's still not for me.
-
I liked it! Pew pew. This is the first Halo game I actually enjoyed. I like watching all the miniature battles. I did not like the number of times my units spun in circles while Covenant went pew pew on me
-
xbl live is so shitty for me
killzone demo downloaded in like 45 minutes but this demo has been downloading for over 2 hours and its only at 45%
-
My connection is shitty, but yeah, it's downloading even more pathetically slow then usual.
-
the Halo Wars demo downloaded in like 15. XBLA is almost never slow for me. Killzone 2 was 20 or so minutes, MLB 09 was more like 40. PC demos download at 2+ megs a second for me, especially on Steam.
-
This sucks, i've got to get back to the doctors at some point today. if this "glandular infection" is the start of "glandular fever" i'm going to be devestated.
Even typing hurts at the moment :(
Sounds like what I had (quinsy) at the start of the year with my stupidly high temperature. Turns out it wasn't glandular fever but it took at least 2 weeks for me to feel anything close to 100%
Anyway this game feels like the perfect console RTS. Just very simple and easy to get into, with some depth to it.
-
i'm just gonna go with xbl being a piece of shit.
-
After messing in the demo a bit, I think that BFME II had a better control scheme. Perhaps I haven't quite mastered the controls yet, but it seems difficult to separate or organize your forces in any coherent way. I know you can hold A and paint over a small area, but that seems to take too long. I liked in BFME II how you could pull the left trigger and everything in view was selected. I like being able to select all the troops at once, but I think some micromanagement would be good. Maybe i am missing something here, so feel free to chime in. demo was good fun and there were some nice little effects and the cinematics were nice. I'll be playing this sometime, though I doubt that I'll pass over DoWII for this
-
i'm just downloading and playing for trolling purposes

you can use LB and get everyone locally. then you can use LT to cycle through the group types.

This gold only policy for demos is seriously retarted. Have to wait a week or so.

you can bypass gold only rules by find it online, burning it to a DVD/CDR, and running it off that.

It feels like a great attempt at taking a PC RTS and fitting it for a console. I don't really understand the need, but it works and is fun. I'd still like to see a console RTS made. I haven't tried EndWar, so maybe that's good. I think so far something like Pikmin is closest to what it should be.

See, when I use that it selects all if my units, not just the ones on screen.
-
weird, in the tutorials they're very specific about one button calling all on screen/local units
-
just did a skirmish as covenant, built up 2 uber scarabs :o. unstoppable. honestly, i don't know if any amount of forces could stop 2 scarabs. this game is fun, even if there isn't alot of depth or strat involved. I like how they kept basebuilding to a minimum
-
LB selects all units in the game (which seems like too much), RB selects only nearby units (which is slightly larger than your viewing area, which seems like too much)
-
what did L3/left stick click do? pressing it would seem to cause something, but it didn't say in the menus and I didn't see any effect during the battle.

RB selects all units on screen.
I played through the demo last night. Got silver on the first mission and tin on the 2nd because I took too long. :(
It's pretty fun. Just might be the first Halo game that I buy.

Is there a video of the original Halo (circa 1999 on Mac) showing off the RTS gameplay? This is the only video I could find from its first incarnation:
Yep, it's called "Evolution of Halo". It's narrated by a few key Bungie employees and it's quite funny. From RTS to 3rd person to FPS.

Both are worth watching as the content and commentary are different and funny (especially the CAM one)

LB works great for me since I am not an RTS player.
1. Select all units
2. ATTACK
3. ???
4. Profit!
-
This game is fun, but extremely dumbed down. Even for a console RTS. I have Red Alert 3 and it's alot better, plus more awesome.
I doubt this game will get alot of post release support either.
-
I can't win the skirmish! I tried 3 times and those giant spider things always destroy my whole army. :'(
-
yeahhhh, this is about what i expected
rts for dummies
-
I can handle fps' on a console.
But a RTS? Nope.
So PASS. C&C X360 made want to kill someone.
-
yeahhhh, this is about what i expected
rts for dummies
yeah that was my impression of the game from reading the GAF thread. I really don't think there's much of a market for RTS on the console, but it'll sell well just because it's a Halo game.
-
pretty much
doesn't mean it's bad game or anything tho, I enjoyed the demo. Unlike Halo, it doesn't really seem to set itself apart outside of being on consoles, so maybe it could act as a gateway and get people into PC RTS games. I've been cold on the genre for a while myself and the demo did make me want to start CoH.
-
Played the demo, willing to buy the game at some point.
-
hah
after another 3 hours of downloading I only ended up playing for about 5 minutes before shutting it off.
-
Just played the demo and don't think it's my kind of RTS. My first ever RTS was Settlers and now I realise deep down I always look for those resource gathering kind of games, watch my empire get bigger, see those cool building animations, be a passivist and then when I'm accidently big enough crush my opponent or turn on my allies. None of this is in Halo Wars, but that's expected since Halo is an action game....still would have been cool. In Halo Wars I usually ended up selecting my entire army and x-ing and y-ing the enemy. The graphics are really cool though.
Everything feels very Halo (graphics, art, menus), except for the music (Bizarro Marty didn't do a bad job, but he's not Marty) and the stupid Uncharted voice for the main guy. Does he need to be in every game? Can't stand his smug all-american voice.
-
So basically, wait for ODST
-
So basically, wait for ODST
If you're a shooter fan and don't like RTS games, then you might not like it. If you do like RTS games, then you might get some enjoyment. I don't like RTS games AT ALL, but I did find some enjoyment during my second playthrough of the demo.
-
I put a decent chunk of time into this demo...probably around 8 or 9 hours total.
The controls are streamlined and work very well. At first it made me happy to play a console RTS that controlled well. Here I thought, "Oh look this is a streamlined RTS which works great with a controller." in a positive fashion. After some extended playtime I'm now thinking "Oh look this is a streamlined RTS which works great with a controller" in a slightly more negative tone. Not that the demo is bad....but it is way too basic for RTS veterans.
I'll stick pick up the title since its Ensemble, but I'll be waiting for a price drop to 30 bucks.
-
You played a demo for 8 / 9 hours. What more do you want?
-
I've played this demo so many times. I set skirmish mode to Heroic and played UNSC. The covenant came in and nearly wiped me out three or four times. I had two scarabs on me at one point, and I finally knocked them back by using my MAC and Vulture barrages.
Also, :bow ODST Drop Troops :bow2 100 resources for a badass team, instantly, wherever you can see. 10 at a time. It's amazing to just send a Hornet over the enemy base and then drop four MAC rounds on it, then drop 10 ODST Shock troops to blow it to hell with rockets and shotguns.
Now, I love Halo. And my first gaming love was RTS. So I might be a little biased when I say that I think I'm in love.
-
I played skirmish mode and had more fun than with the campaign mode, was able to go further into the tech tree and stuff. Couldn't explore my new abilities cause when I went on a 2nd covenant base it was the last one and it was over...Pretty cool stuff
-
lol, rts on a console.....loooooolllzzzz :lol
-
This game sucks. RA3 on consoles is much much better. At least that has a steady 30fps, diverse units, 3 campaigns, and tech trees and shit.
This game is toooooo basic even for consoles.
-
Yeah, but it's made for people who don't play rts games because they are complex.
If they were smart they'd release a HW: Complex version on PC later on to satisfy both groups.
-
I'd get it for $20 or less

6.5
youch.
-
It's okay, the PC community will develop many more maps and mods for this game....
... oops :teehee
-
That's an outlier anyway
Co-op looks cool

I'll buy it once it hits $20.
-
I went through some of the reviews on Metacritic this morning over my cup of tea, it's interesting how the lower range of scores were from genre veterans pointing out that the game's really simple for an RTS, with the higher reviews basically apologizing for its simplicity due to the fact that its a console game, so it magically needs to be simpler.
Halo Wars is a simple RTS for simple people. :tophat
-
I enjoyed the demo, don't plan on getting the game (if there were no games coming out near it, I'd check it out) and I admit that I haven't been big into RTS games for a couple years now (I do own CoH, which I need to play someday), but the way people (both critics and on the forum) talk about this game is so bizarre. On the recent 1upyours(Listenup, w/e) the sole defender of the game was essentially saying "I like it because I've always been ignorant towards the genre", then goes on to say things like "this is how an RTS on consoles should be". Both those comments just confuse me so much; it's not like he is the only one saying these things, it seems like a lot of people are echoing them. All it seems like to me is that they're dumbing down the RTS formula enough to fit it onto consoles, not designing it for the consoles. Both Pikmin and Full Spectrum Warrior seemed to have the right idea going for them with how to make an RTS for consoles.
