Total King's Fieldfag here and Demons Souls caught me by surprise :o Wish it wasn't in 3rd Person though but the fighting mechanics are obviously tailored around swingin' and swangin' yo weapons.

Not really feeling it based on this video. :-\ It looks really mashy, and why are all the enemies human? It seems like there's only two or three enemy types in the whole clip. They've got the atmosphere down, for sure, but that doesn't really look like a KF to me.

I think we've only seen the surface of the game (as far as enemy types). The bosses lead me to believe that the normal enemies should be getting weirder and weirder as you get deeper into the game. There was one regular foe that wasn't a boss but had glowing eyes and knight armor.
As far as it looking mashy, I agree :/ . I like more of the slow, plodding, strategic feel of the King's Field games... this doesn't seem to have it that much. Though, back to that knight enemy, the person playing had to spar it out with the shield and couldn't straf due to the halls, so in that regard some battles look to be more intelligent instead of mashing buttons.
Looks like dog shit.

I believe it is, the frame rate of the game from some of the HD vids doesn't look that bad though.

Only played the first disk. Game is total garbage.

Oh, and Demon Souls looks like shit. I don't understand the hype.

There is no hype outside of some rabid sfags over at GAF. There are a few King's Field fans, but the majority is the same group who have latched on to every single PS3 exclusive, regadless of quality. (ie. Afrika, Aquanaut's Holiday, etc.)
-
Yep, there's a small subset of King's Field fans on GAF but as distant said, the majority of the people in that thread would probably cringe at playing a King's Field game.
-
The framerate in the final version looks fine to me. Graphics are good outside the no shadows. But the gameplay looks :lol
-
I'm interested (King's Field fan here), but no shadows in this day and age looks bizarre. Not a deal breaker or anything, but even sloppy chep stencil shadows are better than nothing.
-
Apparently the shadows were in for a good while but got taken out last minute. Their TGS showing must have freaked the devs/publisher out.
-
What do you mean they took out the shadows? I haven't been following this one closely but I thought it looked pretty damn good before (or at least the pics looks good, in-motion is another story) anyone have a video or stills of the game now sans shadows? I'm a total Kings Field whore myself so it's not like technical problems are going to stop me from playing Demon Souls but it'd be nice to play a Kings Field-esque game one of these days that didn't come loaded with issues.
-
I watched a few videos from the final version, yeah. The TGS build looked choppy 10-15fps with shadows, then this final no-shadows version looks like 30. Then again all the videos I've seen are just walking down cut & paste corridors slashing 1 enemy at a time so maybe the framerate takes a hit in the big areas with giant bosses?
-
Blu Ray can't hold them shadows.
-
Live stream if anyone is interested,

:lol
This is a brutal game, that dude died at least 4 times in last 15 min, each time-back to the beginning of the cave. :'(

Basically what Bebpo said.
Also, it uses the same setup as King Field in regard to Health, Magic and Stamina Bar. Running and Swinging a Sword take up Stamina and herbs are used (at first) to restore health.
-
God, I'm reading through the GAF thread and Mr_No posted some kickass offscreen shots of the various weapons you can acquire.
Spoiler for those who don't want to see some of the better weaponry: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=14833680&postcount=831
Also, you can apparently get the Moonlight Sword (from King's Field): http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=14845894&postcount=852

Yeah, I watched the stream for a half hour one day and it actually does look like a pretty cool game. I can totally see where the reviewer thought it was the best game he'd played in '09 so far. There seems to be good strategy required, lots of great boss fights, and some innovative stuff with how the online ghosting works.
It's not a game for me because I'm not masochist and this game is utterly brutal, but it looks like another winner from From Soft in the line of Otogi and Chromehounds.
Also graphically I was pretty impressed from the stream. It looks like one of the better efforts from j-devs on HD platforms. From are good with the graphics; always have been; always will be.
-
From are good with the graphics; always have been; always will be.
:teehee
Okay, maybe starting with Xbox, or King's Field 4 if you're generous.

Is this game worth 5800?
-
Is this game worth 5800?
Do you like games where you advance 5 steps, then die and go back 4 steps? Then advance 5 steps then die and go back 4 steps?
The videos/impressions make it seem like it takes A LOT of patience and skill. You have to take it slowly and methodically, can't just run and hack and slash and have fun like other games. But the payoff is when you do survive and keep progressing it's very satisfying.
-
Is this game worth 5800?
The amount of weapons in game looks like it may be packed with content but as Bebpo said, if your not into games that are all uber hard you may not dig this one. It looks to be made around the fact that you will die multiple times.
-
Pre-ordered it and cannot wait.
-
I've wachted a few gameplay vids and read some impressions. Looks and sounds pretty interesting after all.
So erase the last sentence of post #11.
-
Holy shit I've played some six hours with my import copy, this fucking rocks!!! The combat is completely awesome, the brutal level of difficulty extremely refreshing, the atmosphere is out of this world, the level design probably some of the best I've ever seen, the boss fights truly epic and magnificent... this is turning into one of my favorite games ever, I really didn't expect it to be that good. I understand all the praise now, this is truly an AAA game.
Graphics are overall good, especially when it comes to the scale of the environments and the awesome viewing distance. Framerate is mostly very stable, at a few points it will chug a bit but it's very infrequent.
Gotta go get me a +4 broadsword

Does it feel like Kings Field?
-
I've never played a King's Field game, but with this game I'm surely interested to replay the whole series some day
-
I've been watching some videos of this game and it's looking pretty good. Is it worth importing the asian english version?
-
Is there a demo?
I'll import the Asian version sometime I guess.

Eurrgh so wretched

This is like the highest rated PS3 game by Japanese gamer review sites. Everyone who has sunk real time into it sings only praises about how amazing a game it is.
But yeah, going by these posts, it is certainly not an accessible mainstream showoff piece like say Oblivion.
-
Might be a cultural clash.
-
Eurogamer reviewed the Asian English version:
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/demons-souls-review
9/10
I might suck it up and buy it one of these months and try to tough through the thing since it sounds really cool if you're willing to really put the effort in.
-
I ordered it earlier in the week but don't think it will even ship for another week or two. Good to know it's good.

Where did you order it from?
-
http://www.ncsxshop.com/cgi-bin/shop/BCAS-20071.html
yesasia has it too, but they said didn't ship for a month compared to re-stock and ship from NCSX.
-
The Zelda thread at gaf where people were pimping this as a Zelda-like experience on the PS3 finally pushed me over the edge. Got on NCSX's waitlist for the English version and should have it in about a month. Will be an interesting experience.
-
how is it any way similar to zelda
-

No idea, ask in the thread:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=360459
-
I read up a lot on the game before playing and it looks nothing like Zelda. I would be playing it right now if I didn't have a final due tomorrow. Stupid cunt school fucking sucks.
-
The only aspect i really see from zelda is the whole sword and shield thing, the world (slightly) and the bosses (slightly).
Not much else, plus Demon Souls is said to be really difficult so watch out Bebpo
-
So gaffers are idiots once again i guess nvm
-
This game is pretty awesome so far. It's pretty hard too.
-
Yeah, totally awesome game. Ended up playing more than I should have and will probably do a shoddy job on my final paper :-\
The online element is really cool too. It's not online multiplayer where everyone works together, instead it's like other people have been fighting through the same area and you either see their clues, where they died or what they're doing now. It's actually really helpful since the game itself tells you the controls and that's about it. Like, there will be messages telling you that there is a hidden treasure or to be ready for an ambush or strong enemy up ahead. My favorite one so far was one just saying "Welcome!" after you pass a bridge that was almost constantly getting attacked by a fire breathing dragon that killed you in one hit. And so far even the scrub enemies can really hurt you if you aren't careful. It's tense too since dying means going back to the start of the level, though you can open shortcuts eventually. If you do die, all you lose is the time it takes to go back and gather the soul from your dead body (souls are like currency from what I can tell). The worst was when I died in the middle of a field where that same dragon was covering in fire, but I didn't want to lose ~7000 souls, so I had to fucking distract the dragon by going near a cliff, making a dash down my dead body, then running and rolling out of there before getting one-hit-killed again.
And actually, the combat can somewhat be compared to Zelda, but the progression of the game isn't like it at all.
-
Looks kinda meh, the Eurogamer review is reassuring though.
-
i was thinking about getting this game until i read this part:
When you die again you lose all of the demon souls you've collected from your hard graft, and have to fight your way back through the level to your own bloodstain to regain them - at which point you either have to sprint for dear life away from whatever killed you the last time, or face getting unceremoniously dispatched by it once more. Die a third time before you make it back to your bloodstain and those souls are gone forever, which is truly heartbreaking when you have to work so hard for them.
To summarise, you end up playing the vast majority of Demon's Souls as either a dead person or a dead person with no money. Every time you die, you start again at the beginning, with all the enemies you just struggled to overcome back where they were. There is no compromise. There's not even a pause button. You get better, or you get nowhere.
i've got no problem with playing a challenging game but if it's just hard for the sake of being hard then no thank you

People have commented that's a really one sided quote. The enemies respawn, but all the doors you've unlocked and opened, puzzles you've solved, shortcuts you've opened up, etc...stay as they were. It's no different than warping out of a dungeon in a normal rpg and coming back and everything is as it was except the enemies have respawned.
-
also all the items throughout the level don't respawn. You can essentially run past almost every enemy if you wanted to. The longest it took me to regain my lost soul was like ~2 minutes, and that's with fighting enemies since they still give you souls/money/etc.
It's not hard for the sake of being hard. It's hard for the sake of expressing consequence in your actions. I'm sure the wuss crowd who couldn't take Dead Rising's save system wouldn't like this either.
The combat isn't Musou like and requires you to be careful and methodical in your actions. You actually need to think of strategies to take on enemies, and I'm not only talking about using water on the fire enemy and simple things like that.
the only bad thing I've read is that acid bullshit dcharlie mentioned above. That shit sounds ridiculous.
-
How is are the loading times? And it almost sounds roguelike in its toughness but without the random levels, loot and perma death (which I guess is what makes a roquelike a roguelike :p )
-
loading levels is like 30 or so seconds, more or less average, but the actual levels are huge and you don't load while in them.
-
That's good then. I hate inter-level loading, one large loading sequence is better then multiple small ones, no doubt.
-
I've ordered the Asian/English version yesterday from NCSX.
Hope I'll get it this week.
Can't wait to play.
-
I'm playing the game now. How do I save? lol
I choose Knight class. And I'm dying a lot.
-
Nevermind fegs. You just have to quit the game and then it saves itself.
I quit the game by pressing the PS button the first time. The game doesn't seem to save that way.
Gay.
But it's a pretty good game, very enjoyable. The graphics are ok. The lack of shadows is laughable and the framrate dips a few times.
And it's too hard at times. Quit frustrating. I'm still getting raped by chapter 1-2. Stupid dogs.

Whew! Yeah, I'd been eyeballing this the more I heard about it. The only reason I'd hesitated so far was due to my backlog that I seem to be developing again. Now I can hold off and wait for the localized.
-
I almost dug this thread up earlier. Looks great. I wonder if they will tack on an easy mode.
-
they just need to fix the glitches in the game. Thing like NPC characters vanishing from the game, not letting you get good items.
-
Yeah, there are a few glitches.
The secret item brushwood armor set in 1-1 vanished.
I couldn't carry it on my first try because I was over encumbered.
So I went to the nexus to load off and came back, but the set was gone.
I just beat Maneater yesterday. Toughest boss so far. Even harder than the Flamelurker.
-
Flamelurker was really hard until I figured out the exploit where you hide behind the bone and spear him for 5 minutes.
and yeah, I want the brushwood armor behind the gate in 1-1, but I don't think I can get pure white tendency at this point. The other set of brushwood armor from that guy who helps you fight bosses was lost when he was killed by a dragon. The major thing lost was Ostrava vanishing so I can never fight King Dorian and get his armor/sword. That pretty much takes away a bunch of opportunities for new armor.
-
Damn, Ostrava bastard glitched out one me too. That sucks.
I'm going to trash him during new game+ to get the key. Won't try to save him anymore.
I also got the Morion Blade yesterday, such a great weapon. Took me a while to get the chunk of hardstone for crafting the weapon.
And I only need to beat sections 1-4, 3-4, 5-3 and 5-4. I hate world 5 because of all the status aliments you can get there...
