Look, I like Will Ferrell - I think I've seen almost his entire filmography (albeit on planes and in other people's houses) save for Kicking and Screaming.
But must he take down promising comedy talent, Danny McBride, with him in his quest to rape and pillage a cheesy childhood pleasure in Subway's® Land of the Lost (http://www.subwayfreshbuzz.com/) presented by Subway® Freshbuzz™?
My original synopsis of the Super Bowl trailer was that it looked marginally funny, but had the bonus of co-starring Danny McBride. A full fleshed out trailer shows a film that feels like it should star Brendon Fraser.
:-\
-
not one funny joke in that entire trailer :-\
-
Spiders! Mosquitos! Dinosaurs! Lizard People! Matt Lauer! A Giant Walnut! Will Ferrell is Yelling!
-
Shake and bake
-
I admit to paying money to see all the McKay/Ferrell flicks. John C. Reilly is a good pairing with Ferrell.
... but this is no Talladega Nights and it's not like that was a sacred cow to begin with.
-
land of the lost was the fucking shit
-
This doesn't look very good. I have liked all his Adam McKay films though. Well those and Elf.
-
Land of the Lost was definitely a fun show.
Also, I've got a big grievance with what I call "The Brendon Fraser Effect" - casting someone totally incapable of actually performing the job or duty of the character. A lot of the gags in this trailer hinge on the fact that Ferrell is totally incompetent at his job as a paleontologist, which is a field that requires a PhD. A brain the size of a walnut - hysterical!
-
Adam Sandler can only do so many shit movies at a time, Will had to pick up the slack as Hollywood kept churning out the scripts.
-
Here's the deal I'm the best there is. Plain and simple. I wake up in the morning and I piss excellence.
-

Elf was one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Jesus, I wanted to shoot myself in the face for letting a girl drag me to that shit.
-
To be fair, Sandler did show range at this point in his career. Will Ferrell has not. First person that posts Stranger Than Fiction (although a good flick) as a serious rebuttal will get donkey punched. Toning down the man child act does not indicate range. The only difference between the character shown in Land of the Lost and Stranger Than Fiction is the frequency of outbursts and he's not as incompetent.
-
From now on I'm El Diablo.
It's like... Spanish for like a fighting chicken.
-
Obviously, this film will appeal to the WrikaWrek demographic. Is this how low Ferrell has sunk to?

:lol
Just kidding. Talladega Nights is the only Will Ferrel movie i actually liked. The T.V station one wasn't bad either. The rest has been pretty much shit.
-
Talladega Nights and Anchorman. You'd probably like Stepbrothers, as well. They key here is that they're all directed and co-written by Adam McKay, who I feel has a better understanding of funneling Ferrell's physical humor into actual comedy.
-
I got the Brendan Fraser vibe too, I attributed it to that 3D movie he did recently. Which is to say they must have really fucked up Land of the Lost. Because that's NOT how I remember that show.
-
Old School was fun in a guilty pleasure sort of way, too. That had the benefit of a pretty much all star cast, tho.
Land of the Lost looks like poop, but the show Danny McBride is in on HBO or whatever looks hysterical. "So, listen I'm pretty sure a couple of boys were holding down and raping a sixth grader... no, I'm just fucking with you!"
-

He did. I have tried to avoid any comedy he has done like for nearly 10 years now though. I am really curious how his next movie Funny People turns out, him doing a R-rated apatow directed comedy with Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill...etc.
-
I've said this previously, I'm pretty much Apatow'd out.
Speaking of Old School and the illustrious Frat Pack, why have they all drifted apart? I'd really love a new film with a good combination of all of them. They seem the best when they're playing it fast and loose. Then they all blew up and did their own things.
-
Has there even been an Apatow movie in a while? Last one I can remember was Forgetting Sarah Marshall.
-
All the films he produces have a strong Apatow bent, plus he did writing for Pineapple Express in addition to producing.
-

This.
Although I'm ashamed to admit I sorta liked Anchorman. :(
Well, at least that anchorman fight scene anyway.

Oh okay. I don't know, Pineapple Express was fucking great, so I guess I'm not Apatow'd out.
-
Holy shit, the Ban Willco initiative will become even more resolved
-
stepbrothers raped the funny, threw it out the back of the van, and backed over its head repeatedly
-
If you've seen one Will Ferrell flick, you've seen them all.
He is nothing more than a one trick pony and his trick got tired years ago. Basically he is a yelling, screaming manchild that runs around and does dumb shit. Cue something breaking apart or falling into something. Cue awkward moments between him and a good looking woman.
I'm also tired of the Apatow flicks. A formula that got driven into the ground fast.
-

Yeah there is two apatow movies this summer. One he is directing himself, Funny People which stars Adam Sandler & Seth Rogen. And Year One which is yet another Michael Cera movie.
-
the land of the lost trailer is really awful

This is confirmation that Apatow is creatively bankrupt

Look, I like Will Ferrell
You lost me here, Feder. I cant stand Ferrell or any of the Frat Pack or their movies.
-

leper this filth
-
Elf and Old School were awesome.
-
Willco raises some good points. Ferrell has his ups (SNL, Talladega Knights, Step Brothers) but he sure as fuck has his downs (Semi-Pro) and even the ups are rehashes at this point. Stranger than Fiction was good, but that's because Will Ferrell was Will Ferrell without half of the YELLING FOR NO REASON AND SAYING FUCK LAUGH AT ME.
The man needs a break. I like the Sandler argument pretty well. I could stand Sandler movies up until Waterboy and after that, they went downhill. At least Jim Carrey had Eternal Sunshine and the Truman Show, which showed he could act or at least adapt himself to other films.
-
Sandler and Carrey had the same failing: they both ended up landing dramatic roles that they did reasonably well with, and then they thought they were actually decent actors. Will Ferrel has always been shit, but I really doubt he'll ever do well in a dramatic role and get himself a big head.

I definitely agree with you on Sandler and sorta agree on Carrey. It's hard to argue against Carrey when he made The Number 13. Seriously, wtf.
-
That is because Sandler and Carrey are both one trick ponies (like Ferrell) and as a result, their act gets stale over time. At that point, they try to do a serious drama to revitalize their careers. Then, once people forgotten how stupid and shitty their last few efforts were, then they go back and make another string of bad movies.
That is the biggest problem with these guys. They have one certain act that only works for a few movies.
I will admit that Liar Liar, Dumb and Dumber, and Happy Gilmore were some of my favorite movies as a child. I can't think of Ferrell (outside of maybe Old School) that I could think as worth watching.
-
God help me but imo Talladega Nights is the best thing Ferrell has done. It's one of those movies that you know you probably shouldn't like as much as you do but you can't help yourself and are kind of embarassed in how many times you've seen it. I think it's freakin' hilarious.
-
I'd rather see a film version of his one-man George W. Bush Broadway stage show than another stupid movie.

They are airing it on HBO later this year, close enough.

Works for me!
My in-laws saw it in New York earlier this month, they loved it.
-
I can't blame Willco though, I sort of have a thing for Sandler movies. Something about the recurring actors that always show up in all the movies that are produced by him. Though, all those movies nosedive when the emotional turnaround comes around.
-
I think the Apatow formula worked better on TV, tbh (note that I'm only counting the two movies he has directed himself, although some of the films he's produced/written sometimes have the same issues).
He kinda made his name with dramedies, which could get away with having a mostly funny episode and then capping it with a more sentimental scene, with the occasional full on sentimental episode. That works well in a TV show, but in a movie, you tend to either want something sentimental or something funny. And the problem is that both Knocked Up and The 40 Year Old Virgin have tons of laugh out loud bits, but when they go into sentimental high gear, it's kinda like "Hey, where did the funny go?" The change in tone is just jarring.
-
the homogenization of internet opinion is frickin sad
Elf rocks. Carrey is easily above Sandler/Ferrel/whatever.
-
Elf rocks.
Elf does rock.
-
Carrey is also dating Jenny McCarthy, which also lowers my opinion of him.
-
I met Jenny McCarthy. She's nice and she's probably awesome in the sack.
-
But she's outspokenly anti-vaccination. That's a position with a body count. The US had its first recorded measles outbreak in more than a decade because of cunts like her.
-
yeah, i can't respect anyone that's anti-vaccination, even if they ARE nice and/or hot.
-
To be fair, I never said she was bright.
-
Edit: and some of you have to be kidding when you throw Jim Carrey in there with Sandler and Ferrell. If Eternal Sunshine didn't show you that Carrey has more acting talent in his fingernail clippings than either of those two, then you need to stop commenting on actors and go find a new hobby.
have you seen Punch Drunk Love? Sandler killed in that role. To be fair though, it was pretty much tailor made for him.
