Title: I made my first bad hire :(
Post by: The Fake Shemp on February 07, 2009, 09:14:05 PM
My track record in terms of recruiting and developing talent is pretty awesome - so much so that I've been nominated for a regional training promotion.

But in a desperate move to fill a position I settled on a so-so candidate. Very raw, but maleable. Said candidate turned out to be a total bust.

As I moved to find an external candidate for a promotion, the employee became disgruntled and started doing all kinds of whacky shit at work.

Finally, the employee no call-no show'd yesterday (after picking up their check when I wasn't around) and then today.

I feel totally bummed, like the hiring was a failure on my part and a blemish on my otherwise awesome track record (I've got over ten people promoted to management positions within the past year - including SM).

bum hires are part of learning to manage, everyone makes them and learns to spot when NOT to make hiring decisions

when the last 20 candidates have been utter drek, you start to suspect you have to settle

obviously, you can't settle, but that understanding only comes after you make a bum hire

This.

This hire was made over 30 days ago. Since Circuit City and other competitors have shut their doors, the situation has improved dramatically.

This started - the employee's whacky behavior - after I brought on an external candidate for ASM (who last night and tonight single handedly made up our negative sales comp). It became apparent that I needed to do that after repeated operational failures, though.

the last job I got I was given because I was able to give the appearance of at least base competence in the interview, unlike EVERYONE ELSE who applied for the job.

I know finding a decent gig is never easy, but I'm always buoyed by the thought that there's a sea of mediocrity out there and standing out isn't usually that difficult.

Don't feel bad, only an idiot would pass up a job in this market. He/she must have had more deep rooted problems
