Title: Worst night ever
Post by: The Fake Shemp on February 10, 2009, 06:27:56 AM
I took a new employee out for drinks to celebrate his first week on the job.  He got totally drunk.  Then he became belligerent towards another regular, who happens to be a Secret Service agent no less and the bartender told him to knock it off or leave.  I was pleading with him to leave the guy alone and come back to our part of the bar.  As I called a taxi - dude disappears.

Next thing I know is that the cops are called, and the manager of the bar said my employee contacted my DM.  He calls me as I'm going home saying that the "bartender is done" and that he was assaulted and someone broke a beer bottle over his face.  Then my DM calls me - angry as hell - and I'm forced to type up a statement when I get home.  Now HR will be involved as of this morning.

I just wish I knew what happened.  I feel like I'm living in the twilight zone.

Word is that I might be done over this.

I hate angry/belligerent drunks.

Looks like your last two hires have backfired on you. Soon you'll get desperate and hire PR

edit: just read your last post. You can't really be held accountable for this, can you?

We will see today.  I guess if the new guy declares that I invited him - I can, since I'm a superior.  If I can make it seem like I went out for drinks and this person just happened to come with, probably not.

But we'll also have to see what the fuck happened.

He's claiming he was assaulted with a broken beer bottle and all this nonsense.  I'm a regular at that bar and that's not something the bartender would do.

Does Hollywood Video have a specific policy regarding drinking with employees?

See what happens when you be social? Fucks sake, Willco. Do I have to be a role model for everything?

whoa wait a minute, I think I got some things wrong here (my English is failing):

Who called you while you were going home? DM or your new employee?

Who got hit by a beer bottle? New employee or Bartender?

Your English isn't the problem; the pronoun didn't have a clear antecedent.

The employee called Willco claiming that he was hit with a beer bottle and saying that the bartender was done. Afterward, the DM called Willco.

Has anyone been keeping track of these tales of Willco? I need to set up some blog for this shit. We could have a great source of ad revenue. Think about it.

No, but if he can claim it's a work related event - I could get in trouble.

i still don't understand what the district manager has got to do with a bar fight -- why did your employee call him in the first place

Why the fuck would the employee have the DM's number in the first place?

Post by: The Fake Shemp on February 10, 2009, 08:20:03 AM
Well, here's his story (just found out).  His version of what the bartender and the regular said varied from mine - he claims they physically threatened him.  Then he went outside to phone a ride behind the bar and two guys claimed they knew me and that I hate him and beat him up.  He has a broken hand and his cell phone is cracked now - he had to go the hospital.  He called my DM to allege that I told these guys to jump him or something, and that they knew the bartender and the regular.

so do you think the district manager knows you well enough to know you wouldn't do something like that?

yeah, it doesn't look like you're going to get in (too much) trouble.  It's a he-said, he-said situation and believing the new guy would require believing that a belligerent drunk wasn't looking for trouble, that you sent guys to beat him up for some reason, AND that these guys mentioned that they were doing this for you.  He must have not been totally sober when he called up the DM and maybe the DM is just panicky right now but he'll probably calm down soon and tell you to let the new guy go.

I'm guessing that after getting into a fight, the new guy thought that you you might report his behavior which could get him fired of course so he called up the DM and blamed it all on you.  The problem is that you probably have a good record and of course, you know the DM better than he does so there's no way the DM won't take your side (hopefully).

Jesus.  Also what happened with that girl Wilco?

I called her after I got home late last night.  I'm kind of an insensitive prick that keeps my emotions at a distance, but booze destroys that self-defense mechanism.  We talked for a bit and I wasn't trashed - I know what I said to her.  She referred to me as a "love-y" drunk this morning and was all giggling about it.  But - aha! - I was sober and went back to my normal routine (telling her I hate her, she's old, etc.).  Sucker.

Have not heard anything from work.  HR told me to expect a call back, which I never received.  Don't know if that's good or bad.  I faxed a statement from the restaurant/bar that basically was almost EXACTLY what I said verbatim, just with more detail.

The employee claimed he did not call the police, but the bar's statement is that the police officer actually responded to someone calling and saying they were assaulted.  So it had to be him.  Within a span of ten minutes, he apparently was kicked out of the place, assaulted, "did not call the police", called the DM and walked home.  The timeline doesn't add up.

It's all irrelevant, as it looks like I'm going to catch some disciplinary action for drinking with a subordinate.

Is drinking with a subordinate outside of work not a good thing?  It's not like you were trying to drug him and play with his toys.

I'd still be hopeful that they don't punish you to harshly but don't argue with them if they are unfair.  Do you think they will fire the new guy?  They should but they might not be able to prove that he did anything wrong.  It would suck if you still had to work with him.

Restaurants are great at gauging people you don't know. Have a couple of drinks at the table, by the end of the meal, you undoubtedly know wether or not they would be cool to go out and drink with.

Lolz, retail.

All this shit about DMs and ASMs and keyholders is fucking ridiculous.

You guys have some of the worst jobs out there; how the fuck do they expect you to actually take it seriously, let alone not get trashed after work every night?

Yeah, I got to the point where I couldn't do it anymore.  IMO the worst part about it is the fact that you pretty much never get two days off in a row due to the open 7 days a week thing.  I couldn't get my DM to sign off on even giving me Weds + Thurs off, and we weren't busy on those days anyhow.

I'm not fired.

The employee did tell HR that when they called the store yesterday morning, that the keyholder on duty told him that they thought he was fired and all this other bullpockey.  The insinuation is that I went around to the staff and told them what had transpired.  I obviously didn't.

I asked the keyholder in question if they had received a call, and they said they did - from the employee stating he thought he was fired after being jumped.  This keyholder went into detail, so much so that they would've had to learn it from employee.

Character assassination get!
