Title: EB Plays Resident Evil franchise!
Post by: Himu on February 10, 2009, 09:55:21 PM
Got the game on day one, loved it until the castle because it wouldn't end. Let the game sit for years. Picked it back up recently. Started playing it again on um...Sunday? Monday? Played from chapter 4-5 to end game in a rush to the end.

In hindsight, it turns out I actually love the game. Seriously, the only part I really didn't like was the castle and it's not the environment or the length that turned me off either. It was the variety of enemies. I was tired of fighting Ganados by then and the castle, aside from the AWESOME Ashley controlling part, was nothing but that.

But uh...4-5 to end game is seriously some of the best gaming ever.

I'm sorry to have sat on you for so long RE4. :( Now to try out Assignment Ada and Mercenaries.

This was the first RE I've ever beaten btw. RE4 down, RE1, REmake, RE2, RE3, RECV, and RE0 to go.

I've actually been replaying the GameCube version recently. Playing RE5 demo got me in the hankering for some slow third-person action, so I've been playing both it and Dead Space.

I'd probably get the Wii version if it was on sale, but I haven't seen it anywhere.

I can't play any of the older RE's after playing RE4. I tried to play some RE0 & Remake, but I couldn't get into either one.

choke on cock

i would have thought they'd be up your alley because they're filled with capcom goodness and have a ranking system that encourages replays and speed runs.  start with the first three games because they are all amazing (though 2 is kinda overrated), then move on to the others because they drag a lot more.

Positive Touch: I have RE1 OG version in my ps2 right now. I'm in the Guardhouse. How long till I beat it.

Actually, they are up my alley. These days, that is. When I was a teenager, I couldn't stand RE. I couldn't get past the controls, the save system, the lack of ammo...but now, I really fucking appreciate all that shit. It's so weird. Gaming tastes change with age, right?

Awesome game. GameCube's best game for sure.

I wouldn't bother with the earlier Resident Evils either. I could never get used to the tank controls. I did enjoy Code Veronica quite a bit, though.

Going off your stupid Shenmue related posts, I'm guessing you still have a dreamcast? Fucking skip all the other Resident Evil games and get Code Veronica, like, right now.

Is there a reason to get CV DC over CV ps2? Although I'd rather take CV DC to add to the DC collection. As a matter of fact, I should get RE1, RE2, RE3, and RECV for DC rather than psx or gc.

Get RE1 on GC.  Forget the old, go with the remake.  Not like you have a choice since there is no RE1 on DC anyway.  I forgot what it was that was different, but IIRC the GC versions of RE2 and RE3 are better ports on GC than they were on DC.  And the GC Code Veronica is based off of the re-released J-version that has some extra storyline cut scenes added in.  Get them on GC if you can; I think RE2, RE3, and CV are pretty damn hard to find now.  If you're not going to get these on GC, get the PSOne versions instead.

Also while you're on this RE kick, GO AND PLAY THROUGH DINO CRISIS 2 (not the original, skip it) NOW.  It's fucking awesome.

PS2 port of Code Veronica has aliasing issues. It doesn't look as "clean" as the Dreamcast original. The GameCube port is pretty good, if you want to get that.

Resident Evil 4 is one of the better games ever made IMO. I'm pretty nostalgic about it...I beat it in three or four sittings a bit after it first came out. I had the flu, and was laid up when I played it. I don't really have the time or inclination to devote to games like I used to, so it was pretty awesome.

I haven't played it since really, but playing through it left a good memory somehow.  :lol

REmake is also great, in totally different ways. It's old school RE distilled.

Hims: guardhouse is a little past halfway, i think.

play zero last, because it's easily the weakest of the numbered games - fucking hookshot.

CVX basically the same as CV, just with more story, and the PS2 and GC versions are the same, content-wise.  As far as RE2 and 3... well actually just check cvxfreak's FAQs on gamefaqs because he points out every minor change.

all re spinoffs are total shit

I'd say that if you had to play any of the 'classic' RE games from 1 to CV, RE2 would be the one to play.  Best game in the series before RE4.

I'll go back to RE1 tomorrow.

Got any tips? I'm playing the OG version, as in for the playstation. Non-directors cut version. I find the spiders in the guard house impossible. I may just ignore them but it's hard since they're so damn fast. It's honestly not that hard, unless I'm get bit in the ass by bad luck (ie. the snake).
Title: Re: Just beat RE4 for the first time

After looking through a bunch of sites, in terms of price, I've come to the conclusion that the original playstation versions are the way to go because they're more readily available. But I'm not sure what features the ports add, like better graphics, new modes and stuff. Seems worth looking into. I'd preferably get 2, 3, and CV all on the Dreamcast though...

Let's see how expensive and rare this stuff is. Sigh.

Resident Evil: Directors Cut dual shock edition psx (http://tinyurl.com/cdkd5l)

Resident Evil 2 psx dual shock edition (http://tinyurl.com/dbewjr)

Resident Evil 3: Nemesis psx (http://tinyurl.com/bqk8xj)

Resident Evil: Code Veronica X ps2 (http://tinyurl.com/d4js9b)

Resident Evil: Zero GC (http://tinyurl.com/czjhc6)

Whew. I wonder why RE: DC, RE2, RE3, and RE0 cost so much while Code Veronica is so cheap....

Is the RE: Outbreak series is worth investigating....?
Title: Re: Just beat RE4 for the first time
Post by: Arbys Roast Beef Sandwich on February 11, 2009, 03:45:53 AM
I bought RE2 and 3 on the 'Cube for cheap just so I have everything on one system. So that's REmake, 2, 3, CVX, 0, and 4. Pretty solid.

Outbreak just bored the hell out of me FYI. Online play was supposedly good but I never got to check it out since I didn't have a PS2 network adapter at the time.

No.  Without an HD you have AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL load times, plus the online is dead.  Don't bother.

Oh, and again-

FUCKING GET DINO CRISIS 2.
Title: Re: Just beat RE4 for the first time
Post by: Positive Touch on February 11, 2009, 08:13:01 AM
i'd say get the regular director's cut version of RE1.  the dual shock version is the same game but with awful, awful new music.  the saturn version has some minor new stuff if you wanted to check that out.  the ds version is also pretty awesome and worth getting.

get the dual shock version of re2.  it has new content.  it's also the version that was ported to dc and gc.  the n64 version has some unique bonus stuff, but it's on the fucking n64.

re3 has the same content on all systems.

cvx is the same on ps2 and gc.

Quite simply the greatest game ever made.

I made it all the way through the castle in the original gamecube release but never beat it. Picked up the Wiimake back in 2007 and blasted through it, and had much more fun. Still think its a bit too long, but a fantastic game none the less.

Has this ever happened to anyone else? You stop playing a game, for some odd reason despite enjoying it, only to pick it back up years later and you just blast the hell through it?

Yeah, I think I've narrowed it down to:

RE: Directors Cut psx, non rumle verson. Even though I have RE1 psx OG version and REmake, I think it'd be worth having for arrange mode.

RE2, RE3, and Code Veronica for Dreamcast and RE Zero for GC. Apparently all they added to CV ps2 and GC are new cutscenes. Quite frankly I'm not big on RE's story to begin with but if I like the game, I'll probably just end up watching the cutscenes on youtube or something.

Hopefully it all doesn't cost too much in a month!

I'm at work so I can't spend too much time waxing on.

With action games, I think that excellence exists below the surface. The little tiny touches that make up the gameplay, like how you aim your weapon, the feedback that enemies give when attacked, how your guy moves, how he turns, how he reacts when damaged, it determines the quality of the game.

I believe RE4 nails its mechanics more than any other game. The entire combat system gels perfectly.

That's one of the reasons I am a staunch tank control advocate. It is an input system that works perfectly within the larger scope of RE4's gameplay. Free aim, movement while aiming, strafing while firing, all of that nonsense, would disrupt the perfect system which RE4 has.

One of these days I'll have to sit down and type up a long love letter to the game. Try to put my adoration into words.
Title: Re: Just beat RE4 for the first time
Post by: Draft on February 11, 2009, 01:51:28 PM
Pro mode is really not that hard, btw. I would say that it is the better way to play the game once you have beaten it once.

Like most action games, RE4 requires a bit of trial and error to figure out bosses and other encounters. The encounters don't change on professional, they're just more intense because you take more damage, and enemies can absorb more hits. You don't have to be perfect, but you do need to know what you're doing.

Excellent. I started a new game last night with my clear file and made it to the castle in like...one hour. Heh. Of course, that was with my beefed up pistol, magnum and shotgun..:D

But I still avoided more enemies than usual.

On my clear file it said I killed 885 enemies  :o

That's why normal is no good for repeated playthroughs. Once you learn the upgrade system and know when certain weapons are coming your way, normal becomes a joke.

I never do new game+ in RE4. Just makes it way too easy beginning with a souped up shotgun and sniper rifle.

I also never use the auto sniper anymore. The bolt action is simply way too awesome.
Title: Re: Just beat RE4 for the first time
Post by: Himu on February 11, 2009, 02:05:08 PM
On the subject of RE4's greatness in terms of controls and feedback...I agree 100%.

The people complaining about RE5's controls, I can understand...I guess. But one thing I love about RE4 is the balance between offense and defense. I really enjoy the fact that I can't ALWAYS see where enemies are, so I have to take notice of my surroundings at all times. I especially love how the game has the enemies slowly walk towards you and it's your job to kill them before they get in your face and rip it off, I loved that in Killer 7 too.

The stop and pop gameplay works perfectly because of this. In any other action game where you could use free aim or run and shoot, I think most of the tension is lost. I'm just popping some guys as I'm taking cover (yawn) or whatever. But in RE4, when I'm fighting a chainsaw wielding maniac I CAN'T back away and shoot at the same time. I've gotta run away to survive, and shoot when able. It's a totally different type of playstyle from modern games that have ripped RE4 off, and I can't describe it in words. It's just so satisfying being backed into a corner while a troll who's like 12 feet tall heads towards you, as you blast him in the face with a shotgun.

I think RE4 is the very reason I can't get into cover combat systems that have been popular since Gears.

Post by: Draft on February 11, 2009, 02:07:45 PM
I could probably right many paragraphs on it if I could get the motivation, but I think there is something beautiful and perfect about the marriage of the run, the walk, and the 180 degree turn. It's a limited movement system, but within its confines is the potential for some truly slick maneuvers.
Title: Re: Just beat RE4 for the first time
Post by: Himu on February 11, 2009, 02:08:49 PM
I don't see what's wrong with limitation.

Skate was all about limitation and the game is better for it.

The limitation of the controls in K7 are why I love it. It's so simple, but I find it fun as fuck.
Title: Re: Just beat RE4 for the first time
Post by: Draft on February 11, 2009, 02:12:28 PM
I agree. Wouldn't use K7 as an example of limitations being a good thing, though :lol

But definitely agree that a limited control system or movement system often results in a tighter overall game. Having gotten pretty obsessed with Bionic Commando Rearmed recently, I'd put that forward as another example. No jump, no falling through floors, no control whatsoever while falling. But once you embrace what IS available, you start to see the beauty within the limitations.

If it's the dude in the rectangular box, you need to hang on below the box to drag him down, and then swing quickly up and stand on top of the box to finish the drop.

I actually had to check a faq on a boss. Skipped area 2 when I started the game (months ago) and ended up fighting the "upgraded" version of the boss who spins bionic arms around you. Figured out how to beat him on my own, but couldn't figure out how to shoot him. Killed the upgraded guy with the angled laser thing.

Went back to area 2, beat the first phase of the boss easy, and then got frustrated at doing like zero damage to the dude with the laser. Gamefaqs was all like swing under his seat and grab onto the machine. I was all like  :-\

Went back to area 2, beat the first phase of the boss easy, and then got frustrated at doing like zero damage to the dude with the laser. Gamefaqs was all like swing under his seat and grab onto the machine. I was all like  :-\

The first time I figured it out easy. The one I'm stuck on now, I don't know how people beat him without an faq.  :-\

Gotta hack the terminals, they give you clues.

Reason I couldn't figure out the guy in Area 2 is that I thought you simply couldn't grapple onto the machine proper, because when I tried so from directly below nothing happened. But instead, the part I needed to grab was just a little too high, and I was wiffing.

I've beat RE4 way too many times. I last played it in January IIRC. I've probably gone through the game 7 or 8 times. I've got a mission clear file with the Handcannon, the Infinite Rocket Launcher, the Chicago Typewriter, and 9 gold chicken eggs.

Title: Re: Just beat RE4 for the first time
Post by: Himu on February 12, 2009, 02:22:52 AM
This is insanity. Why did this happen?

I noticed that in the lab, my game started to skip whenever voice acting occurred, for example, when I met Chris in prison after putting in all MO discs or when I turned on the computer to type in the password to unlock the doors on B2 and B3.

So I get in the elevator, meet Barry, and Wesker shows up, shows his true colors. Barry puts his gun on me and the voices start repeating and jumbling. I'm like,"what in the fuck?"

I saved before, so I didn't mind taking out the disc and wipe it. This game used to belong to my friend and it was in rough shape when I got it years ago. So I decided to clean it. So I cleaning it, wiping it with my shirt and I hear a crack. I notice a giant crack. FUCK. I know it's not going to work after that but I wanted to try anyways. So my ps2's not reading the disc at all now. I don't know what in the fuck happened. I'm always gentle with my discs and I didn't press to too hard or anything. It just cracked like that.

Fuck.

I just came up with a hypothesis as to why my RE disc cracked. I take care of my games, I have about 200 games that are disc based, so I put them all in a giant case. Bad mistake? Because I'm thinking the weight of the other discs, or maybe the quality of the case cracked the disc. Either that, or my friend didn't take care of it well because it looks the same way the day I got it.

I better check out the rest of my games because this is any game collectors nightmare.

That and the fun of playing through Mercenaries with Leon, Ada, Wesker, HUNK, and Krauser. Pulling in ridiculously high scores is easy for me now, but I remember how challenging it was for me to get the Handcannon.

And the Handcannon unlock requires you to get 5 stars on every stage with every character. And you need several hundred thousand pesetas to fully upgrade it to infinite ammo and 99.9 power.

I guess if you suck.  :smug

I've seen every FAQ say shit like this...but I was able to buy the Infinite Rocket Launcher and the Chicago Typewriter, AND fully upgrade the Handcannon in about one and a half playthroughs. Just make sure you pick up EVERY treasure, sell all ammo you can find, and combine r/y/g herbs to sell for max price.

Oh yeah, Himumu: beat Assignment Ada. I think that's what you have to do to get the Chicago Typewriter (it still costs 1,000,000 pesetas). It may not be as cool as the Handcannon or as fun as the Infinite Rocket Launcher, but NO gun compares to it. Its firing speed is probably better than the TMP and its firepower is 10 (which is like double the shotgun's initial firepower). You can mow through everyone and bosses take only a few seconds each. That way you can easily run through the game quickly and then get enough cash to buy the Infinite Rocket Launcher and fully upgrade the Handcannon.

Yeah, I have to admit that swinging the girders, doing backflips over thrown girders, jumping across the gaps when the bridges fall, and stabbing him in the eye are all pretty fun.

Damn, RE4 does so much shit so well. The QTEs and context-sensitive actions really add so much to the game, and they're all animated so perfectly.

RE4 quicktimes are the best because there's very little of that Simon bullshit. They are very well suited to an action game, because they reward reflex and not memorization. Like, SHIT BITCH HIT A HIT A.

Fuck I love it when you control Ashley in RE4. I would pay full price for a horror game where you had no weapon AT ALL the entire game, like Ashley's segment in RE4. It's a shame your partner in RE5 is also a warrior and not a princess made out of glass like Ashley. That kinda means the chances of RE5 having ANYTHING remotely similar to the Ashley segment is slim.

RE5 is definitely desinged for co-op play only.
Singleplayer just doesn't work well when you have something like Shitva around.
You'll have to check up on her health all the time, and she makes some stupid decisions. She's such a distinguished mentally-challenged fellow. *based on the demo*

I'll have to admit the game is pretty fun when you play it online with someone else, but the singlepayer was always more important to me in a RE game.
That's why I'm so dissappointed and bitter about RE5.

I hope RE4 isn't the last traditional RE game. Hell, even RE4 wasn't traditional, but it was such a strong singleplayer experience.

How many times have you played the single player demo? I've played it about 20 thousand times now, and while I thought her Ai sucked at first, I find it quite competent. She shoots when she needs to, assists you when she needs to. She's basically Ashley except actually useful.

While the game be designed around co-op, I felt the demo was perfectly playable in single player mode. So much, that every time I play it I'm doing something different from last time.

Keeping in mind, though, that during the more extreme encounters, Ashley spends a good amount of time hiding in some dumpster while Leon takes care of business. I haven't played it in a while so I may very well be forgetting some scenarios, but I can't seem to remember many great escort scenarios. One of the two I remember was also pretty bad (sniping baddies from above to keep them from taking Ashley away) while the other (covering Ashley while she raised some platforms) was alright. RE4 was a masterful game, but a masterful escort mission? I'm not seeing it.

When you get your gun ready, she always hides behind you. When you aim at her, she cowers in fear so she doesn't get hit. Usually in escort missonis, the escort is one big liability. Not Ashley. Also, dumpsters rarely appear in the game from my recollection. There's one in the farm area with all the cows and blue coins, there's one in the optional area where you fight the chainsaw sisters (you have the choice of choosing between chainsaw sisters or the el gigante, I always go with the gigante). And there's one near the end of the game where you fight like three regenerators in one room.

But for the most part, when Ashley is with you, you are definitely escorting her. But unlike most other games of this type, she tries her hardest to not make her presence known so that she's a nuisance.

One notable Ashley escort part was entering the castle. You had tons of snipers, cannons. If Ashley got caught in a blast, game over dude. So you had to make her wait in safe areas while you did the damage. At least that's how I go about it.

Alright, that is definitely true. I think I even nerdily pointed this out to the missus when I was playing it, that they had really gotten the escort feel down like in no other game. But I guess that's the thing, though; she isn't a liability since in the end, it's all about your actions. In RE5, you have to rely on an A.I. to be on your level. We'll see how it works out, hopefully for the better.

I don't think you have to rely on the AI being on your level.

In the Shanty Town part of the demo, where you and Sheva split up, I had to help her out as much as she did me. The sense of team work, even on the single player portion of the demo, was dead on I thought. When fighting the chainsaw maniac she ALWAYS does crowd control while I kill his ass. Despite the AI being limiting, they definitely work.

Still has better AI than Dom.

I still think the AI for Sheva is a waste.  I'd sacrifice her "assistance" for the sake of conserving ammo and not having a death magnet running around.  RE5 is probably going to be a 100000 times better when playing online, but I don't think I can pull that off, at least not the first time through the game.

Ehh wtf is that? They play it as if it were a beat 'em up game.
But that seems to be the only way to play if you want to reserve some ammo.  :-\

And yeah, I've played the demo quite a few times offline. But still couln't get Sheva. I guess she does help you from time to time, but 4/5 of the action she does is completely stupid.

Ashley wasn't really a nuisance in RE4. As stated earlier, she avoided action all the time.

How is that any different from RE4? In RE4, I shoot enemies in the head, move in to kick them, repeat. Melee works great in both RE4 and RE5. It's an excellent way to conserve ammo, handle crowd control,  and look cool in the process. The reason they did all that was to show off all the cool melee crap you can do.

What dumb things does Sheva do? I haven't noticed her doing dumb things yet, but maybe you have a different experience.

a few ways she has died:  Getting stuck behind a door when the chainsaw guy was right there, trying to point blank snipe the chainsaw guy, getting stuck behind another door while the chainsaw guy was there, getting stuck behind a 3 foot high wall.  I can go on, but you get the general idea.

I think my plan when playing will be to take away all her ammo and weapons, force her to constantly run away while I take care of things.

Just beat RE4 for the second time this week. I've got about 800k pesetas, and I've almost got enough cash for the Chicago Typewriter.

Before I beat it earlier this week, I felt it was a really good game but for some reason I couldn't finish it past the castle section. I thought it was overly long and stuff. But I didn't give a shit about any of that in my latest playthrough. I blasted through the castle in one sitting.

I'm now trying to work on Mercenaries, which I find hard as fuck. Tips?

I can't get enough. I mean, I've beaten it twice this week and I'm actually anticipating a third run with the Chicago Typewriter, maybe even start a game on Pro mode.

Cogedlo, cogedlo, cogedlo, cogedlo.

What's funny is, they're saying those things even before they see Leon. So they're all milling around, mumbling "Grab him, grab him, grab him."

And during the binoculars part right when you enter the Village proper, the Ganados are all doing farm work while muttering "mierda" ("shit") and "a por el" ("after him!"). That's always amused me.

Crushed don't you know how the hourglass and multipliers work? Try to start off each round (and each subsequent start of a multiplier) by grabbing an hourglass that nets you 1000 points per kill for 30 seconds. Make sure you've got a bunch of Ganados around you, toss a hand grenade, then pick up the hourglass before the grenade explodes. Then run around and start kicking ass.

Just beat RE4 for the third time in one week...

Used mainly the Chicago Typewriter. Beat the game in 5 hours and 44 minutes, saved a total of three times.

The game is easy as shit with the CT, but for some reason, it's STILL fun to play. Very similar to MGS and stealth camo, in fact. Fun for speed runs.

Started a game of RE2 Claire disc on my psp.

I haven't played the game in 10 years and so far, I'm finding it way harder than the original and I'm at the beginning of the game. This is due to a few factors, most notably the zombie count far higher in RE2 right out of the gate. In RE1, you'd typically face off against 1-2 zombies in a room tops, and you only had to fight more than a few at once until the end of the game; even then that was only in a few rooms.

To make matters worse, in RE2 you're in a city traveling through alleys and tight corridors. With the higher zombie count, it's really TEMPTING to go all out and shoot these fuckers, but my philosophy in RE is to save as much ammo as possible making this so much more tough on things.

Beat Claire A.

Took me 5 hours and fifty five minutes to beat. I got a D ranking. :(

Review of Claire A:

+ Nice difficulty balance, for the most part, because I only got three weapons in the game.

+ The ability to choose whether or not to recieve the submachine gun and extra inventory should add to replay value.

+ I thought the story was really good, with an interesting set of characters and villains. You have the feeling that you're just one small story in the grand scheme of things, and that Raccoon City's citizens are trying their hardest just to survive. Because the story has a larger scale, the story comes off far more morbid and depressing than RE1's.

+ Fun sense of adventure and puzzles. Although not as good as RE1's or from what I remember in RE3. The puzzles were tame, but still fun as hell.

+ I think the game is far more scary and tense than all the other RE's I've played, with the exception of 4.

+ In RE1 I mostly stuck with the handgun, magnum, and shotgun the entire game. I didn't use the bazooka once. In RE2, not only do you get more grenade launcher ammo than you did compared to RE1, the game is designed so that every single weapon should be used at one time or another. I had to use the grenade launcher on Lickers, for example, just to survive their encounters.

This is a part of the reason I feel RE2 is a better survival horror game compared to the original. Unlike the mansion in RE1, at almost no time in RE2 where you feel safe. When you feel safe, the game slaps you in the face and makes you face reality. A room that was once safe suddenly has zombies crawling through the windows; you get an item in an interrogation room and all of a sudden a Licker jumps through the damn window; the shutter in the autopsy room suddenly opening, with a zombie crawling out. RE2 constantly plays with player expectations, forming an extremely cohesive horror game experience and I always had to make sure I was packing enough heat to kill em all.

+ Excellent atmosphere, use of music, and graphics (for its time). I first played the game a bit when it came out, and I was impressed then, but I'm even more impressed at how well it has aged graphically. Small touches like light reflecting on Claire's clothes/skin, the different sounds as she walks on different textures, the amount of GORE in the game. Holy shit. The top half of an alligator's jaw EXPLODED. When the G-Virus embryo's hatch or whatever, they tear their victim in HALF, Alien style.

- Sherry. Fuck. Fuck Sherry. Okay, I don't mind that Sherry follows you, that's good. But when she's infected with the G-Virus? My God. You'll run a good amount, and suddenly she stops following, head balled into her crotch. The only way to make her move again is to go back. When you're in a sewer full of giant spiders, that's the LAST thing you want. FUCK SHERRY.

I'm only half way through the game now, may start on Leon B later but this is shaping up to be a survival horror classic. Shame I couldn't beat it when I was 12 years old for various reasons.

RE2 was easily my favorite RE before 4.

I played the shit out of that game. Unlocked all the extra stuff and weapons.

I think to get the gatling gun you had to beat the A and B game in under 3 hours (so like 90 minutes per game), no saves except for the one to switch discs, no first aid sprays, and sparing use of power weapons (which I think meant hardly any magnum or acid/flame rounds.) That's what got you the S rank, which unlocked the gatling.

When I tried it, I went Claire A and Leon B. Did pretty great all the way to the very end, when for some reason the Tyrant, who I had beaten up a bunch of times, just kicked my ass. And I had a fuck terrible time trying to pick up the rocket launcher. My little brothers were watching me do it, and they were screaming their heads off about how I was fucking up, I was screaming at Leon to pick up the Goddamn launcher, it was madness. But I took him out and got my rank.

One of my most intense gaming memories.

It's funny.

If there is one thing I really miss from the old style REs, it's how you had to play to get S ranks. Which was juke and jive all over the damn place, hardly ever shoot a monster, and have an old school schmup style knowledge of the enemy placement and attack patterns.

RE4 is great, and I wouldn't want the series to regress. But damned if I don't miss doing clean runs through those goofy ass mansions, baiting zombies then busting a 180 turn into a pattern and zipping towards the door like a wide out.

Beat Resident Evil 2 yesterday with Leon B, got rank B, took 4 hours.  Got me some sub machine gun unlocked in the process. I should be starting Nemesis later today, and I can't wait because I love the game and this time I don't have to worry about beating it too fast because it's my friend's copy.

Overall review of RE2:

+ Excellent, excellent story. It is entirely simplistic, but what it makes up for simplicity is an amazing sense of atmosphere, dread, amazing moments, and fun characters. I completely sympathize with the antagonists (aside from Mr. X of course) in RE2. The Birkin's just wanted to continue their research, and if it were not for Umbrella what happened in Raccoon City wouldn't have happened. Seeing Birkin transform from his more human Tyrant form to more traditional Tyrant form, and finally into fucking LAVOS from Chrono Trigger was awesome.

Sympathizing for a villain in a horror game, or story period, is a rarity for me. And it is because of this simplicity that RE2's story shines. You constantly wonder about intentions; Ada's intentions, Anette Birkin's intentions, why the fuck is Mr. X chasing me?! Although the story isn't full of absolute mind fuck worth moments like Silent Hill, and I'll be first to admit the story ain't that deep in a SH or Jacob's Ladder sorta way, the story is still full to the brim with memorable moments. Mr. X; the giant Croc, Ada slapping Anetta in the face and pushing her off a platform, fucking Ben, the last quarter of the game entirely including Ada shooting Mr. X in the FACE.

+ The dual scenario concept is pulled off extremely well, aside from the first half of the game, which is full of doing the same puzzles as you did in Scenario A, which makes no sense.

+ This is survival horror to its fullest. I truly felt like I was trying my hardest to survive, especially at the end of Leon B in the lab. For some reason, that was friggin hard. There were a bunch of enemies that were easy as well with Claire because she had the bazooka, but with Leon my weapons barely made a dent and I had to go out of my way to use special weapons, which I was planning on using on the final boss. I had no more shotgun ammo, handgun is pretty much useless at that point in the game, and using my Submachine Gun and Flamethrower or Magnum would spell bad news for me later in the game.

I kept dying on Mr. X in the room with Leon, until I could evade him soundly. But I only brought herbs and a magnum because I didn't see a point in bringing too many weapons when all I did was dodge him and use the rocket launcher. By the time I got to Birkin's final form, I had exhausted all of my rocket launcher ammo, and I just had my trusty magnum with only a few bullets. I didn't think I'd be able to kill him with that, but I somehow did. The pay off was worth it.

+ Amazing music and atmosphere. RE2 completely outclasses the original in this regard, well, except music.

+ Insane incentives to replay.  I like challenging myself. One of the perquisites to get an S rank is to not use any First Aid Sprays. So I didn't use any as Leon. I tried my best not to use many special weapons as well. I ended up with a B rank, I think, because I didn't beat it under 3 hours but I did well for a first time. I want to get an S rank with both characters someday to get the Gatling Gun. On top of this, like RE4, there's are extra modes after beating the game. Extra Battle mode is fun as hell, btw. I wonder what you get if you beat it. It's really tough too.

- Sherry is the one big negative for me. Stupid kid.

- I didn't like doing some puzzles all over again in B scenario. It ruined any belivability for me. For example, in the police station, you have to get those red jewels...AGAIN. Claire already put that crap in, so why do it again? There are far too many moment in RE2 where you're repeating what you did in Scenario A. There should have been more unique moments. Thankfully, there are times when the puzzle solving connect both scenarios. In order to get the last Chess Plug, you have to wait for Claire to explode the door to the chief's office and then go and get it. This complaint seems moot because it's really only present in the Police Station. Once into the sewers, factory, and lab their scenarios are vastly different, which was great.

As for ranking..even though I really enjoyed RE2, I still like RE1 and RE4 more. Maybe this will change as I play it more.

as far as replay goes, you are aware that playing leon a > claire b changes the game up quite a bit, right?

does he like RE4

he says that after disliking RE5 to this degree, he really wants to play RE4 to compare. so no. what bothers me is some of the scenarios he describes. Apparently there are 2 on rails parts. I asked: 'what, not some jeep + turret shit right?' after which he replied: exactly that :( one of the on rails bosses is el gigante with a beard

RE4 had a few on rails moments like the mine cart and ashley driving a truck.

yeah but there you controlled leon, in this game apparently just a turret.

ah fuck, i shouldn't be worried like this. he's gonna start RE4 and if he doesn't like that, i can safely disregard what he says

You're just behind a turret? Who's idea was this?
