Title: This is really freaking me out.
Post by: Eric P on February 12, 2009, 12:26:44 PM
I have never worked in a tall building before.  The highest up I've ever been previous to um, right now has been 25 stories or so.  Before this job, I was working on the first floor of a three story building.  Before that, 8th floor.  Before that 3rd.  So on and so forth.  The DC and Richmond areas are not known for their illustrious skylines.

I'm currently on the 20th floor in a High Wind Advisory situation and my building is slowly rocking back and forth.  If you look at the blinds, there is the illusion as they sway counter to the movement of the building.

This would be fine normally because how much of your time at work do you spend looking at the window blinds?

What's really doing me in is the noise.

Creeeeeeeak  pause

Creeeeeeeeeak pause

Creeeeeeeak pause

as the building sways.

It sounds like the foley artist was brought in for Pirates of the Caribbean today.

The top corner of our building is splitting the wind and it sounds like a jet engine.

As far as I know, no skyscraper has collapsed from high winds. The fact that it's swaying in the wind is actually a good sign, because otherwise the base would snap and your office would end up in the middle of the street.

yeah i know that from a logical stand point

yet the experience itself is freaky.  my cto told me a story about he was working on park ave and it was so windy due to the pressure differential between two fronts that windows were blowing out on his block.

Most buildings are designed to give a little bit in the wind, so I wouldn't worry about the swaying.

If Eric P dies, I'll need a new co-host for our podcast.  I will be taking submissions.
