Title: C'mon, EB, don't ignore Flower

Get this game.  We need too support innovative game design.

I've only seen screens. What does this game do that's innovative?

Motion controls that actually work, amazing art direction, coupled with addictive mechanics.  I would say the concept is pretty innovative--you'll be hard pressed to find these types of games on the HD consoles, which are in danger in becoming FPS machines.

distinguished mentally-challenged fellow simple games don't need any more support.

Perhaps you haven't seen the last 20 or so NPDs?

actual 'game' of it is pretty shallow, but it's a really beautiful game.  If Rare is the worst at making visually pleasing games, whoever made this game are the best.

the real difference between this and things like fl0w and Braid is that it's fun to play, but the things you're doing is flying over to collect things over and over.  Controls are really great and doing moves like a 180 kinda just work when you want them to; you're not really sure how you pulled it off, but when want it to happen it happens.

Wario64 said the final stage is awesome so I bought it.  Otherwise at $10 I would have passed since it looked really non-gamey like Flow (which I liked but was only worth really $5ish).

I will play soon.

Title: Re: C'mon, EB, don't ignore Flower
Post by: dammitmattt on February 12, 2009, 11:54:18 PM
No demo and it should be $5, but I'm still enjoying it.

In fact, my wife played through the first two levels and liked it, although it was a bit frustrating watching her constantly waggle too much.  Any game that sucks my wife in for more than 3 seconds has my vote!

and admiral, I completely agree with you re: demos (reason why I haven't bought crash commando, everyday shooter, lumines, crash commando, etc), but I made an exception with this game.  even after the first level I love it.

I've done two levels and it's a better prince of persia than price of persia was.

Except it has even more collectibles!

To do the dude (and anyone else) who said the controls suck - you're an idiot.  It's the best Sixaxis motion control yet.

Then that VW GTI turd gets a demo, wtf?

Yeah, I passed on Crash Commando because there was no demo and I don't trust XBLA/PSN games in general for quality purposes.
Title: Re: C'mon, EB, don't ignore Flower
Post by: Bebpo on February 13, 2009, 01:28:44 AM
No trolling but is flower actually a game? It looked more like an interactive screensaver to me. Is it sometype of puzzle game?

It's like a 3d flying sim where you can't die.  Is pretty fun, controls decently considering motion controls are made of the devil's flesh, has really nice music and art.
Title: Re: C'mon, EB, don't ignore Flower
Post by: cool breeze on February 13, 2009, 01:38:48 AM
it's collecting flowers by controlling the wind using the sixaxis in a 3D space.  You'd be surprised by how entertaining that is when you throw in beautiful graphics, music, and, for the first time ever, good sixaxis control.

I don't get why games on PSN don't get demos.  I would have bought Pain at release if they had a demo, but instead I waited until the sale months after.
Title: Re: C'mon, EB, don't ignore Flower
Post by: duckman2000 on February 13, 2009, 03:00:08 AM
Well, what kind of demo could they have really made for Pain without basically including the whole "game?" In some cases I think it's understandable, but yeah... I would like a demo here. Still buying it at some point, because I'm tough that way.

I like it a bit more than dcharlie and I feel that it's more of a "game," but I don't see how some people are getting so completely excited about it.  It's a fun little game for an hour or two and that's it.  It doesn't transcend anything.

Title: Re: C'mon, EB, don't ignore Flower
Post by: Ninja on February 13, 2009, 07:43:07 PM
I agree with that, I don't think $15 is too much for R-Type but I can see Flower being a more appealing purchase as it's an interesting experience, even though it's prety short. To beat it in an hour you'd have to be really rushing it though. It took me over two hours and I didn't find most of the secret flowers or unlock many trophies.

I succumbed.

Not much of a "game" but a hell of a lot better than Flow, that's for sure.  I don't know if it's really worth the 10 bucks but then again there's a lot of shit on XBL that isn't worth the money either.
Title: Re: C'mon, EB, don't ignore Flower

I just like it because it again shows art >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> technology.

The windmill level looks incredible with the changing time of day.  The colors are just wowowow.  I wish I could walk through fields like these in Fable or FFXIII or Gears of War 3: Color Time.

Come on dc, Flower's a really unique and great experience.  It's a hell of a lot better than 90% of the stuff on downloadable services, that's for sure.

Also, I'm pretty sure that for the most part, the people complaining about R-type's pricing aren't the same people buying Flower.

Well, whatever. To me all games are an "experience". Flower isn't a traditional game, but that doesn't mean it's not a game.

I guess it's different for everyone.
Title: Re: C'mon, EB, don't ignore Flower
Post by: cool breeze on February 14, 2009, 11:43:40 AM
while talking about if it's a game or not is confusing, for me, I think that including those secret flowers makes it more of a game than what was normally called a non-game in the past.  Some of them are straight forward, others require you to explore or solve a puzzle in the world.
Title: Re: C'mon, EB, don't ignore Flower
Post by: Bebpo on February 14, 2009, 12:39:41 PM
I just did the night stage and that was amazing.

Arguing about whether it's a game or non-game and worth $10 compared to $15 for r-type is silly.  A movie ticket costs $10 does that somehow mean people can't complain about r-type costing $15?  There's really no connection.

Flower is an experience.  Whether it's a game or a painting or a movie or whatever doesn't matter.  All that matters is if the experience is worth the asking price ($10).  That has no relation to the pricing of other experiences.  Everything has to earn their price.  I mean a lot of $60 retail games are 6 hours of gameplay and then you never touch them again.

Post by: Bebpo on February 14, 2009, 01:13:13 PM
Ok beat it.  I actually found the 3rd to last stage the most impressive artistically.  The last stage was good but it was too long.  I liked the lengths of the other stages.

Also I am terrrrrrible at this game.  I only got 1 trophy and my 2nd to last flower is limp and dead even though I beat the level.  lol, I'll probably replay it eventually.

But flower is something new and r-type is a remake of something that's been released in about 100 versions.

Relative to DCharlies point that doesn't work. How much extra effort does it take to put out a demo?  I was demoing Castlevania SOTN last night and that just had a time limit.

Ok beat it.  I actually found the 3rd to last stage the most impressive artistically.

The windmill one, right?  I really liked it at the end when you're collecting petals at the base of the windmills at sunset - kind of peaceful in a way.  Personally stages 2,3, and 4 were my favorite. I didn't find the last one to be all that impressive graphically, or at least I wasn't impressed as everyone else seemed to be but it was a nice ride.

I've really warmed up to flower overall though.  I'm not sure if I'll ever play it again but the experience was worth it.

yeah, but Prince of Persia was distinguished mentally-challenged because they expected you to contemplate the events going on and reach an emotional conclusion because of the powerful, moving story between Nathan Drake and an even dumber browner Natalie Portman.

I've been gaming for 25 years, never once got motion sick playing a game... but something about zooming up and down the buildings, wheeling around...  :-X
