Title: Dear MadCatz...
Post by: The Fake Shemp on February 14, 2009, 02:21:28 AM
Thank You.

Microsoft's reign of terror is at an end!

No longer must we use the awful D-Pad to play XBLA games and miscellaneous fighters.  Now we have the option of using a gamepad or sexy arcade stick.  And - wow! - what an option.

I just played fourteen straight online matches (went 11-3) of Street Fighter 2 HD with a West Coast buddy (he was using the stick), and we would've never stopped unless he had to go to bed.

I can't wait to see how this bad boy handles stuff like Pac-Man.

I'm probably gonna go to best buy tomorrow and see if they have it.  I'm getting a bit impatient with Gamestop.

Dear MadCatz,

Thank you for making people who suck assume they are actually good. Then I can play them and bring them back to reality. This will make me very, very happy.

Yours,

Demi

Are they wired or wireless?

Are they wired or wireless?

If i remember correctly they are wired due to the whole MS "wireless controller tax".

Maybe it has changed and they are now wireless?

Wired.

I can actually play single player without yelling at the screen.

Yeah baby!  Best Buy had three pads left, Ruy, Chun Li and Ken.  I went with Ken (my favorite character back in the day.)  Sweet, today just got a lot better!

Very long cable for those who were wondering, no Gamecube type controller here.  It also has the xbox-release thing at the top so your 360 doesn't take a swan dive when one of your drunk friends inevitably trips on it.

Is the stick better than the hori one?

Initial impressions make it sound like it's at least comparable if not better than the hori stick.

the low end mad catz one ($80) is better than the low end hori one ($60).  If you just get them normally it's still better, but the added benefit of the mad catz one is that you can buy better parts and swap them out if you do feel the need for an upgrade.  The low end hori one can't be upgraded at all.

Apparently the low end MadCatz stick is a piece of shit.  The joystick gets hung up.

How does the Tournament Edition stick compare to the Hori HRAP 2 SA (a HRAP with all Sanwa parts)?

The HRAP 2 SA is a great stick but I'm still learning to adjust to the looseness of the stick and the ultra sensitive buttons.

What about the arcadeinabox.com stick?  The arcadeinabox PS3/360 stick seems like a better investment since you can use it with both systems.

OUCH.

I'm glad I saw this, not going to get one now until something gets fixed.  Markman is in that thread and says they found out about it last week and are looking into solving the problem.

Haha, I love it seeing noobs and casual players talk about how they need a stick to perform to sound more hardcore.  I doubt that 5% of the people who actually own a stick get any benefit out of it.  Even better when you play them on a controller, beat them, and they counter with "well, I'd have won if I had a stick"!  At least now they'll have an excuse!

Hell, I love fighters but prefer a good D-pad to a stick.  I only use my stick because I like playing fighters in the arcade, so I need to be used to it.

no, a stick does provide a lot of benefits once you get used to it.  Not only for stick movement itself, but having all 6 face buttons present to press in any order makes moves easier to pull off.  Personally, I'm probably better with a pad if only because I'm more used to the motions of my Saturn pad compared to my arcade pad (for 2D fighters), but I try and get more accustom to the stick since pulling off triple punch/kick moves or even doing focus attacks are going to be much easier.  That's just for 2D fighters though, for 3D fighters I prefer a stick 100% of the time over a pad.

I do think that some people do make it seem like a stick is a necessity, which it isn't, but they are worth it if you have the cash to spend.

One thing I want to try one day is hooking up my arcade stick and saturn pad to my PC at the same time, see if I could control movement with the d-pad and use the arcade stick buttons.  For 2D fighters, the concept sounds ideal for me.

I'm probably gonna go to best buy tomorrow and see if they have it.  I'm getting a bit impatient with Gamestop.

No bullshit, I used to know this guy that-

-Always insisted on using the best quality stick (which he didn't have, so he didn't play anything)
-Didn't play some games because they were "broken" (this was back in 1999-2000 when this term was being thrown around), even though the "broken" stuff was done by 1-2 people in some arcade out west that he would never go to anyway
-Didn't go to tournaments or anything but still kept up and worshipped players
-Figured he himself could never be that good so he just didn't bother playing, yet spent all his time on Usenet and reading magazines/guides about the same fighting games he didn't play.

I'd see him around campus and be like "Hey I just got [game name], wanna play??" and he'd just go "Naw, [game name] is...broken."  And I'd say "But it just came out a few days ago!"  And he'd always just go "Yeah but the arcade version has blah blah blah and this one guy in Ohio posted this super unblockable-infinite-string blah blah."  So I'd leave him behind and a bunch of other people would come over and play.  Never mind that a lot of ports back then had these bugs REMOVED, since they were now not "perfect" and now "unplayable," even though the broken bullshit was gone.  I never got this mentality.  I know these games are nice n' "hardcore" but seriously, if you aren't going to arcades and/or playing in tournaments, IT REALLY DOESN'T FUCKING MATTER what game you play and what you like to use.  My friends didn't really take to the Mad Catz pad and want to stick with the 360 controller.  And that's fine.  (Although in that case it just meant more wins for me, lolz)

But yeah, I do feel that a good stick makes fighting games generally easier to play.

Used my pad last night on the Sonic Ultimate Collection.  Works fantastic.  I'm really happy with the purchase.  Between that and my wireless 360 pad I'm set for PC controllers for a long time too.
