It's good. I just beat the first couple of missions in the campaign this morning. It reminds me alot of Warcraft III, mostly because of the equipment upgrades and leveling, but I actually like the system in place here better. With each level you can allocate 2 stat points to 4 different categories, and you gain XP by defeating enemies as well as specific objectives and proficiency. Where it differs from Warcraft, at least so far, is the flexibility and non-linearity in which you can complete each level. And there are boss fights. I just beat the first one and it was actually pretty tough. I like it alot so far
plus: Achievements :hyper
-
How's it compare to the first Dawn of War?
-
Its completely different. So far in the campaign, there are no bases whatsoever. There are 3-4 control or capture points throughout each map and your allies can respawn there if they died, but you cannot create hordes of troops to overwhelm your enemy. I've only played a few levels, so that may change. Without bases, you are forced to examine how you want to capture the next control point, instead of camping and upgrading troops. It also forces to you use each group's abilities.
-
I don't know, I have it running perfectly at High Setting on 9800GT/Core Duo setup. I would say that it runs better than Fallout 3 on my machine
-
Too bad you didn't try out the beta, in which case you would know for certain if it would run.
-
There should be a single player demo out pretty soon, if you're worried about performance just wait for that.
I wasn't too enchanted with the multiplayer, was really simple and the macro game was annihilated out of the game completely. It's still Warhammer 40k though, so I'll probably break down and buy it at some point soon (but not for $50).
-
I'm having trouble DLing this off of steam! :maf :maf Have to see if I can get it working tonight.
-
Picked this up today. Glad I bought the retail copy.
Got a disc to install from, and a tech tree guide right in the box. Linked to my steam account so the best of both worlds.
Will be starting in about 20 min.
-
Man, singleplayer in this is so awesome. I love the stats/loot system. It just works so well somehow. I haven't been able to play a multiplayer game because the 2 times I've tried, I've gotten a Failed to Load Dump error or something.
-
Well that's about fucking Jaffe......I just beat the campaign and it didn't give me an achievement :maf. Damn the singleplayer is repetetive. It would be nice if there were some kind of random matchmaking for campaign co-op, since only one person on my friends list has the game :'(

BISH WE NEED TO PLAY CO-OP THEN. That versus game we had was a disgrace.

Booooooooo.
My laptop (Q2D 2.20Ghz, 2 gigs RAM, Nvidia 8400gs) can't even run this passably on low. I bet Starcraft 2 will run like a dream on it, though.
-
Tomorrow I shall get it from fry's I'm hoping.
The beta was a lot of fun and it ran pretty well on the home rig. Doubt it'll play on my new laptop but we'll see.

fuck. mine is similar (2.0ghz, 3.something RAM and a 512mb 7600 go) and i was hoping to check this and empire total war out :(
-
So you can register the retail version for Steam re-downloading later?
I'll have to pick up that version if so.
-
How does an 8400 compare to a 9600, in laptop terms? I might have to rethink the purchase if it's going to have issues with my 9600.

I've been playing the campaign exclusively in co op now. On the second highest difficulty, up to almost 15 hours in it and this is all kinds of awesome. This is the way to play the campaign. Splitting up the groups into 2 and 2, makes tactical striking easier with a teammate. One of the best uses of co op experiences I've seen in any game.
The co op partner I've been playing this with is a big time Blizzard fan (especially starcraft), and we are both thinking this campaign is going down in the top 5 rts games of all time. Of course, calling Dawn of War 2 a typical RTS is a bit of a misnomer. The game is a tactical strategy game at heart instead of your typical rts title, and the better for it.
There is only one major complaint I can think of right now, and hopefully this gets patched. Some missions require you to go back to previous areas under different circumstances and clear out enemy hordes. Well if you captured a special strategy point like a Foundry or Shrine they are already taken when you restart the map under the new mission. The problem with this is these points act as rally points to reinforce your own troops like your regular rally points, but there are enemies populated again in these areas. If you hit the retreat button it takes you to the closest rally point.....so if you are by the foundry you took in a previous mission and hit it you are going to run through enemy swarms to this point and you are fucked. The game should automatically know the safest rally point to take your troops. This is a pretty big glitch if you aren't paying attention and can decimate your entire squad.
So you can register the retail version for Steam re-downloading later?

Yes.
You can even install the game off the dvd right away too so you don't have to wait for the download.

Got my copy
add me, Bzchan. If you wanna do some coop or woop my ass.
I hope all of the wargear exclusives don't make for a uneven multiplayer experience.

This got an update today that fixes the Memory Dump/Leak problems most Vista 32-bit users were having. I'm going to bump all my graphics settings up to Ultra and see if I get them anymore.

The War Gear exclusives are only in the single player campaign. The only thing multiplayer gets is army painter colors. The War Gear becomes obsolete as you level up too because you'll get things that are better than the exclusives.
Added you. :D

Well, let's start off by saying something nice. The actual game play is awesome, single-player and multi-player.
Ok, Multi-player would be the best but you know, THE GAME FREAKING CRASHES AND LAGS OUT ALL THE TIME AND I'M SICK OF GETTING STUCK WITH NOOBS WHO CAN'T HOLD THEIR OWN AND WE GET ROCKED BECAUSE OF THEM! ALSO THE INTERFACE IS SO HORRIBLE IT'S LIKE IT WAS DESIGNED AT THE BEGINNING OF INTERNET PLAY!!11ONE >:( >:( :maf :maf >:( >:(
I mean how freaking hard is it to put in a filter option and to be able to search for a specific game name and not use this gay system that is Live? This game feels like a CoH mod that was made by distinguished mentally-challenged fellows and down graded from CoH's awesome performance. I'm just so pissed because I love playing the game but I barely ever get to finish a game it's so frustrating. My cousin and I quit playing last night and played CSS because it's so aggravating. :'( :'(
Edit: Need to play with FatalT as our 3rd more cause he's good. :bow FatalT :bow2
-
Missed my chance to play the beta. Really unsure if I should get this or RE5 or the 50 cent game. Any chance there's another demo out there?
I wouldn't spend $50 on it after playing the full version.

Remember when Frag was pimping this? Turns out its a huge dud? PC gaming :nsfw

The gameplay is awesome it's just that with all the technical issues it has it's not worth $50. It's a sad affair. :'(
-
Pc gaming is rather difficult to deal with in comparison to console gaming. You've got millions of configurations and multiple os'es it has to be made for. Just like with other pc games they will eventually get patches out, relic is great with patch support.
I cant wait to install.

When you buy The Last Remnant on Steam on April 9th, you can forget about this lame "RTS" poopfest

Review scores are high and, while it's a flawed game, it's still a very good one. I think Relic should have just gone full bore for the co-op experience instead of 1v1/team RTS multiplayer, but that's water under the bridge at this point.
I am disappointed by some decisions Relic made at a more fundamental level with the design of the game-they took out base building and streamlined economy/tech trees (which is fine) but the mechanics that they substituted in to provide the kind of macro level decision making that is core to higher-skill RTS mutliplayer is just terribly lacking in the game right now. There really isn't a lot of diversity in potential build orders, the map sizes and capping mechanics are such that the meta game probably won't change much, and the number of units is just really limited given how specialized each one of them is.
I think the game is actually really good at being a team game where the above stuff doesn't matter so much. They should have stuck with their guns and shipped without a 1v1 mode if they were dead set on competitive multiplayer, and told people looking for 1v1 to play CoH which does provide a high-skill 1v1 RTS environment (though it needs some balance changes which are coming Real Soon Now).

Eh, I don't have time for RPG's anymore. I haven't even played Fallout 3 yet.
-
Well, I think I am done with the campaign and co-op until the achievements get patched. I am down for some multiplayer though if anyone wants to play, gamertag: Kestastrophe
-
Achievements are officially Jaffe'd: I got to an 10 win streak and no achievement, even though the 5 win streak worked fine :maf
-
I just ordered this from the GoGamer sale... $36 :rock
-
Buy this game people. Demi doesn't know what the fuck he is talking about.
Best RTS since Warcraft 3.

bought it on steam, nicca

There's a patch out today? I just checked the steam forum and it still says 2/27 was the newest patch date.

Well I meant with the patches that have been released, not that any were released yesterday.
-
Bought the game IN A RETAIL STORE.
Installed the game.
Steam says: GAME UNAVAILABLE PLEASE TRY LATER
What the FUCK?
-
Steam is getting hammered right now and I think it's because of the free Unreal Tournament 3 deal.
-
So, this is purely about immediate combat tactics? No base building or long-term deployment strategy involved? That's quite appealing.
-
In singleplayer every mission is essentially a deployment mission, so there is no basebuilding whatsoever, but you have to capture control points if you want to replenish any troops that you lost. In multiplayer, your base is already built for you, but there are better commander skills/units that you can acquire by leveling your base. The combat is really all about using the environment for cover and such and flanking, with some unit/commander powers thrown in as well. And multiplayer is really quick, most matches take 10-20 minutes and rarely go over that.
-
Sounds hot
-
Looking to pick this up sometime really soon, if only to prevent THQ from dying completely and wiping out Relic with them. Maybe I'll just play in 3v3, where the game's design IMO worked a whole lot better.
oh and tauntaun , for you:

Ever since the beta, I've only played the 3 on 3 multiplayer. One on one just wasn't that much fun tbh.
-
Game is fun, but I had trouble getting the camera/controls to agree with me. For some reason, mouse look seemed to have been "stuck" so I couldn't pan or rotate with any sort of precision. Worked after a restart, and now it's just plain hot.
-
Beat my first boss, awesome. Caused my system to stutter, though, so I may have to adjust the quality a bit. I guess asking for playable performance on high was asking a bit too much from my poor 8600. The game kicks ass.

Finally :)
*edit-Patch arrives on Monday

This is on sale for $20 on Steam today

also, the Last Stand update just came out, which introduced a "horde" type of gameplay mode

Last Stand impressions:
You can choose between Ork, Eldar, and Space Marine heroes and it has a persistent leveling system. I worked my way up to level 5 with a Space Marine. Basically, each hero class starts off with vanilla equipment and abilities, but you are by no means hampered. As you level, you unlock new equipment and abilities. For instance, my reward for level 5 was the healing ability. This mode reminds me more of DOTA than an RTS, except it is much more action based than DOTA and there aren't any friendly creeps. It is just you and two other people against waves and waves of enemies. I really appreciate how Relic is supporting this game with a steady flow of content, and this newest content is a huge departure from the existing game.
I hope someone cares :-\

So the Chaos Rising expansion came out earlier this week. I got it and played the first campaign mission, which picks up right where the base game's story left off, but I haven't put more than an hour of time into it. I know there are a few peeps here who play this game, I would love to hear impressions. I would love to play co-op with anyone here, on base game or expansion, so post if you're interested.
For those that are interested, the expansion adds an additional 1000 GFWL points, its only $30, and I believe that it is standalone 8)
*edit: there is a "gold edition" that is available in store or Steam that has the original game and expansion for only $40. Great deal, with a relatively noob friendly multiplayer
