Title: God of War 3 and MAG for 2009. 360 obliterated
Post by: AdmiralViscen on February 20, 2009, 01:50:30 PM
Quote
Tucked away within a Sony press release trumpeting next week's arrival of Guerrilla Games' Killzone 2 was word that two other anticipated PlayStation 3 exclusives, SCE Santa Monica's God of War III and Zipper's MAG, are both slated to arrive this year.

Before today, neither game had been given a firm release window. MAG is a 256-player online shooter, in which players assemble into groups of 8 to duke it out in a persistent world. God of War III, meanwhile, is the latest entry in the beloved beat 'em up series.

"[Killzone 2] ushers in an unprecedented year of titles to hit the PlayStation platform throughout the year including the blockbuster exclusives Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, inFamous, MAG, Heavy Rain, God of War III and MLB 09 The Show," states the release.

I have no interest in MAG, but God of War III this year is very awesome.

While I think GoW3 will be 2009 because it'd be stupid to announce a March+ 2010 release date in JUNE 2009, I've learned to never trust release information from hardware manufacturer PRs.  They like fluffy lists.

IF, and that's a big IF, GoW3, Uncharted 2, FFXIII JPN, Ratchet PS3-2, Infamous, Killzone 2 all come out this year and are good then yeah Sony will have had their first good year of exclusives.

Is Ratchet confirmed or assumed?

Either way it will suck if it's in 2009.

I think at the end of QFB it said coming 2009?  Either way Insomniac hasn't missed a year yet, so it's very likely unless Sony tells them there's too much 1st party in the fall and to release it in early 2010.

I hope MAG is everything they claim it will be. Should be the ultimate military MP shooter if so.

I don't know dude, I was playing TOD the other day (had gritty shooter fatigue something fierce), and I think I might have been a bit too jaded about it the first time around. It doesn't do much new, it's squarely a new Ratchet title to fit right after UYA, but it's still pretty damned entertaining and really well made. I still don't think it was a needed game, but I'm happy it's around, and even if I think this game-a-year stuff is starting to seriously compromise their games, I'm pretty sure it will at worst be a gorgeous breather-title.

It definitely wasn't needed as a game and if the new one has a shred of creativity, you won't be glad it's around either.

It's cool because it's Ratchet HD and it was something to do for 8 hours, that's it. I don't regret buying it, but Insomniac sucks.

It's the third best console Ratchet if you're being generous.

Well, is there anything even remotely like it coming out anytime soon? Granted that I could just play Going Commando and get roughly the same (or better) game experience, but I like pretty games.

Eh, I'd say second best (I wasn't as big on UYA as most), with its biggest downfall being that it was, as you say, little more than Ratchet HD. Bigger worlds, but they never felt all that expansive. I hope they get rid of rail grinding, and avoid weapons like the transformation weapon and the vastly over-appreciated disco weapon. And I do think it needs co-op.

if critics weren't distinguished mentally-challenged and gave R2 good marks, maybe Insomniac would learn to spend more times on their games.  As they are, it's like they're writing a paper the day before class hoping to scrape by.  They need to put in the time and effort into the next game, whether it's Ratchet or a new ip.

as much as I would like a PS3 Jak or Sly Cooper game, I like that both Sucker Punch and Naughty Dog aren't trying to balance old and new series at the same time.

That was a good example of a game getting good scores based on nothing but the game meeting every wish of the critics. Never mind that it had become a truly generic game that completely shat on what actually made Resistance fun for those who did enjoy that game back in its day, it did everything the critics asked for so that's a good game right there.

Speaking of which, though, MAG must have been in development for some time. I so hope they get it right.

Ratchet & Clank Future is the best exclusive on the PS3.

I have high hopes for Infamous; the developer is awesome at pretty much everything that has been missing from the open world + superhero genre, such as bosses/villains, interesting characters and entertaining plot. But the most recent gameplay clip I've seen looked sort of drab. I know you will upgrade your powers a lot, so obviously it won't stay like that, but the baseline powers don't look very interesting. The platforming was cool, though, and if those were mini-bosses, then the real villains should be awesome.

yeah, you pretty much echoed all my complaints for infamous.  All the platforming stuff looks incredible, same with the really different ways of finding cover, then you see the actual combat and it's all so blah.  The one super attack showed was awesome, but other than that all they've shown make it seem like the combat will get really boring.

the only ps3 exclusives i'm looking forward to this year are infamous and uncharted 2

On the flipside, I do sort of appreciate their attitude towards what they want to show. Watching clips from Prototype, and having played Hulk UD, I feel like I've seen everything there is to see in the game. I'll still have lots of fun playing it, but it feels sort of spoiled. I just hope the guys at Sucker Punch aren't full of it when they talk about how awesome your upgraded powers will be. Sounds like they have their priorities straight, but who knows.

again, I agree with what you're talking about.  Prototype looks so much like Spider-Man Web of Shadows that even the sense of progression is so familiar.  I think the problem is that Infamous may be too slow paced.  Because it's not a multiplayer shooter, they shouldn't have bothered trying to make aiming/accuracy part of the combat.  It doesn't really make sense to snipe with electricity, but it bogs down the game so much.  It should have just been aiming in a general direction, no cursor, pull the trigger and fire off electricity that way.  Even with the cool cover system they have there, you still are pretty an aim button which changes the game from a platformer to a shooter with a really bad transition between them.

Have they said anything about a release date for Infamous? I was figuring late Spring or early Summer, but they've been pretty quiet about it lately...

Gamestop says May 1st and Amazon has it down for May 31st, but who knows...

Infamous' problem is that it's supposed to be a superhero game, yet you're this bald uninspired messenger boy who has to shoot out little balls of lightning six times to kill an enemy.  That's not a superhero, and if it's supposed to be one I don't want to play it.  And when the premise of the game outlaws any use of weaponry or vehicles, the "superhero" looks even less fun to play.  At least in Crackdown you could drive some zany vehicles, or in Prototype tanks and choppers, but you don't even have the opportunity to do so in Infamous.  Then one of the bosses (or mini-bosses or whatever they are) is a held-together humanoid heap of scrapmetal that's ripped straight from Force Unleashed.  That doesn't make me want to play Infamous, it makes me want to ignore it.

Sucker Punch just needs to show some footage from later in the game where you're fighting an actual boss with ridiculously badass powers or something.

Re: MAG, that could be the best game of 2009 if it fully realizes its potential.  I have the feeling it's getting delayed, though, regardless of what PR people say.

Well, the fact that it has some real villains and apparently a plot separates it quite a bit from Crackdown, so that comparison just needs to go. I loved Crackdown, still do, but it's getting more credit than it has ever deserved.

And as for the powers, yeah, they look a bit weak at the moment, and boring to use. But those will supposedly change, so we'll see. Not sure what was wrong with the mini-boss, though, looked like something lifted out of a comic book to me. Assuming we are talking about the same one. Fighting it looked like a drag, but the creature was pretty alright.

Heh, speaking of which, I guess there was some special on Gametrailers with Infamous. Maybe it's an old program, but that restored my faith in the game quite a bit. Villainous vixen? Wicked.

MAG will suck, I have no faith in Zipper to put out anything decent. Their SOCOM games were phenomenal until they made it more open and on a larger scale. 256 players?  :lol

Wasn't the problem with SOCOM that they tried to simply explode it? If they work towards 256 players from the start, I don't see why it should be a problem. It's all 8-player squad based skirmishes as part of larger battles and with an expanded command structure. From the sound of it, the actual battle scenarios will still be on a more intimate scale than Joint Operations. It could completely fail, but if a company like Guerrilla can dig itself out from under its own shit, I'm not betting against an already experienced and decent studio doing well.

Gametrailers already has a trailer and cutscene up of infamous.  Uh, proven wrong I guess.  One peculiar thing seems to be the music, which is either from The Dark Knight or just extremely similar.

yeah, the cutscene was really cool.  The story seems like it could actually be interesting depending on how they take the idea of the powers being a worsening mutation.  Another problem that is more apparent when you watch the cutscenes is how blah the in-game stuff looks compared to it.  I mean, it's not bad or anything, but if they tried to get something to match the cutscenes more then it would look more unique for the better.

True, though I think they have done pretty good in terms of character design (except for the main character, eh) and especially the locales. Maybe my expectations were just low given the whole open world approach, but they seem to have put a lot of care into giving the environments some personality.
