I don't know if I like this or not. First off- No autosave FUCKING SUCKS. I lost like 2 hours of play. Also, the first 2 hours of the game ste you up to think like, "Oh, fighting 3 enemies at a time is a godo thing" and then they're like "Here, start a team on your own", but if you fucking take on more than one dude at a time you get FUCKED UP and lose your progress.
I see the game in here that is good, but it is a long and painful road to get there.
-
WTF, you can save at any time other than when you're in a battle or on the world map, quit crying. Your fault you fucked up.
As for the other thing, yeah new enemies in new areas can sometimes kick your anoos. If you don't recognize something, don't stack 'em! Pick 'em off one by one.
-
Turn it off, it's not for you, sorry. This is for people who don't let people walk all over them
Turn it off
Now

When you get to Blackdale, recruit a leader from the guild and put them in Rush's squad, so Rush isn't by himself. Later, when your stats update, you can begin to recruit weak soldiers and start building your dream team(s).
-
It actually took me hours to figure out how to make a union when I started, so don't feel bad. The game doesn't do a good job explaining itself.

I recruited a couple of dudes, but I'm only allowed 3 team members, so one Union always has 1 dude.
I'm going to invest some time in this tonight- I think I just need to find the game's groove.
-
Early on it's better to err on the side of more dudes in fewer unions. The big fat lizard dudes are indispensable early on as they have a lot of hp to contribute to unions and pack a good punch.

I got that frog dude at the first guild who has a ton of HOP and STR26 and then I got a Lizard dude at the second city or whatever. There's a Tiger-striped Lizard dude I amy pick up from that first quest in the cave, but he's ASSPENSIVE

Is that Baulson? If so, you want him. He's a friggin' house.

You mean Leaders? You can group together leaders
So you would have Emma's group + Rush (+Leader - I picked McGrady)

Right. I'm allowed to recruit as many as I like, but I'm nly allowed 2 unions and 3 deployed characters. So one union has two dudes and another has one.
-
Eventually you'll be able to recruit grunts to support your leaders. Until that happens I really suggest you just dump everybody into one union.

Hmm. Why didn't I think of that? Heh. I'm gonna sit down tonight and really try to get a feel for this
-
I spent like 2 hours with this last night and really started to feel it. I was kind of dissapointed that you do like 2 solo quests and then get your borderline invincible 4 Generals Squadron back. I was really enjoying going it alone.
One Q: I'm guessing I should pick a weapon style and stick with it. Are there any styles that are particularly useless? Also, is there a guide to the somewhat byzantine stats? (GLUTTONY HAS RISEN!)
-
No guide for the random stats, and just use Dual Wield (two swords/katanas/mixmatch) it's the strongest
The only guide you should use is for getting all quests so you can fight the Absolute Conquere and get owned by how insanely strong he is (see my thread)
-
I haven't found a guide that explores the weird stats. "Emma's love has increased!" Uh... awesome, I guess. My used copy of the game didn't even come with the instruction book, so I was REALLY flying blind, lol.
Keep plowing through until Daveed tells you that you can recruit soldiers from the guy in the town square of Athlum; then you'll be able to recruit grunts to your cause. Early on I would just have two really big units- helps you stay alive better. As far as weapons go, I have no clue. I have been using a two handed pole arm that looks absurd in Rush's hands because it's the weapon with the highest offense I found.

Make sure you dedicate what leaders you plan on using
Major contenders are Baulson (DO HIS QUEST) and Torgal, because they learn these "Unique Arts" that do BEAST DAMAGE (upwards to 200k) near end-game and you need need need neeed nend enendndfsnedndn NEEED these
Don't bother with Emma, dump her and build up someone else
-
Sweet, I've been using Baulson since I got him. Torgal occasionally as well.
Rush is hilarious. "Everybody is getting hyped!"
-
Also download the Ancient Ruins DLC because you'll be visiting there quite a bit to grind (people say its not necessary but I call huge BS on that)
-
I still have this game sealed in my backlog, you suggest getting the guide demi? Rpg's scare me, but the gameplay looks awesome.
-
The guide is decent but it has wrong information if you are going for Absolute Conquerer

My Union at the moment is Baulson/Rush/McGrady
I didn't go 2x wield with Rush because it drops your speed to the end of the turn order and Rush just isn't naturally string enough to justify pumping him on damage and dropping his turn order.
-
Rush actually beasts later on. He gets too many useless abilities from doing quests though, and can clog your command list at times. I prefer Dual Wield but I don't think any method is a wrong method really.
Ditch McGrady when you get the option to recruit more leaders/use the 4 Generals, I think generic leaders are poopy mcpooperton

I don't really understand McGrady's place. he has a low STR, but no Mystic Arts. Just Restore. Maybe I should pop that Frog guy back in. I'm just afraid I;ll need Recover, bust Rush has the Item Art for it
-
You want people who know Magic and Item Arts (doesnt have to be both at the same time)
You might be muted in one group, but the item user can throw an herb out instead
It's held together by sticks and glue early on, but later you'll get more people and abilities and it starts to come together and you know what your battle plan is

I think this game really "starts" after Blackdale. It was the first time my formation mattered, the first time I had to balance leaders and grunts (WHOOPS SORRY I FORGOT TO PUT ANYONE WITH ANY KIND OF RECOVERY ART IN YOUR UNION), the first time I really had to spend some time with the Union Board. I'm really getting into it.
Quick Q's: Is there any way to tell which enemies are vulnerable to Mystic Arts vs Combat Arts? Combat Arts are all around effective, so I use them whenever humanly possible, but I'm not sure if this is a wise strategy.
Also, some of the "boss" encounters are kind of dumb. The Giant inside the Catsle Ruins is a perfect example- He's flanked by two huge Eagle things. You're supposed to ignore the Eagle things (They Curse you in the first round, putting a time limit on the affair) because they have gigantor amounts of HP. You're just supposed to focus on the boss. Which, whatever, it just feels kind of contrary to the game's purpose, maybe.
BUT I KICKED THEIR ASS
-
Also, the cut scenes in this game are about as interesting as CSpan
"The Duke of Opia is mad at you!"
"Well, don't tell the Marquee of Frankonia, okay?"
"But what if the Page of Guardia asks?"
FOR 30 MINUTES
-
I had trouble with Emma's quest too. But I got lucky by mobbing the giant as well.
For -any- giant birds, what you should do is try and select "Hold Your Ground!" or something similar. Giant birds will always cast Curse on the first turn, after that it's a regular fight. Later on (like Disc 2) you will get a character who is immune to Curse, which is a huge help

I didn't really have trouble with it, I just thought it was a weird arrangement. Also, I took your advice and Emma is NOT IN MY TEAM! I've got Baulson/Rush/4 Arm Guy/David as my leaders
-
DAVEED. I went with Baulson-Torgal-Rush-Blocter as my leaders.
-
David is brutal in the later battles, with his Gae Bolg. I made him a Mystic.

OK, I'm buying this. My parents were both C-Span junkies, so this will evoke pleasurable feelings of nostalgia.
-
the demo runs perfectly on my PC, but that is one confusing demo. It was pretty fun I guess. The biggest problem was that there were QTE during battles and since I use custom drivers with my 360 controller, I had no idea which button to press during them.

If there were ever a game whose potential could not be exposed in a demo, this is it
