Title: So I'm getting my small intenstines chopped out

Anyhow, went for a colonoscopy/endoscopy today. The drugs were very nice, but 2 hours later oh man are my internals fucking sore and shrieking in pain. Well turns out my small intenstine is so damn narrow it's a surprise anything can get through and that I haven't been whisked to the ER and surgically Frankensteined over the past year. So I'm going up to LA on Friday to talk with my new best friend the surgeon and set an operation date hopefully within a week or two after that. They're going to take out something like less than a foot but more than 6" of my small intenstine and then sew up the remaining stuff to my large intestine. Sounds fun! Luckily I will be on lots of drugs at the time and during the days following until I recover and can eat food stuffs again. But then I should become HUMAN again, which I haven't quite been for 4 years-ish now, which should be cool.

I'm not too worried about the surgery because it's orthoscopic(?) where instead of cutting you open like jack the ripper, they go in through your belly button and use a scope that has magic fingers and it's not a huge deal. The survival rate seems astronomically high and people with Crohn's get this done regularly (studies show that like 80% of people with Crohn's get this done at some point in their life).

I just wish DQIX hadn't been delayed so I could have moped around and played some DQ while recovering in bed afterwards. But maybe I'll rip DQVII to my psp and play that instead. :D

but oh the drugs you get for this kind of stuff is aaa. morphine, tramadol, oxycontin, fentanyl patches and iv drips oh my etc

What has been wrong for four years?

Good luck with the surgery.

Crohn's disease living which has made it harder and harder to socialize freely and enjoy an outgoing lifestyle. Surgery removal of the disease doesn't cure it permanently, but most studies show the diseases doesn't come back for 3-5 years usually and I'll be on medication to prevent it from returning, so maybe longer.

Plus Crohn's is becoming SO prominent right now with everyone knowing someone with Crohn's that tons of new medications are being tested and coming out on a yearly basis, so even if it comes back there might be much better medication in 3-5 years from now to fight it (or maybe with stem cell research they'll find an actual cure for it!).

The main thing is that I only have 1 & 1/2 years of law school + 3 months study time for the bar left. So if I can get back to normal health and during that time finish law school, get a job, and maybe socialize enough to meet a nice girly girly :-* then even if the disease comes back, by then I'd have a lot of my life together and would be at a more stable time for handling it.

Plus I'll get to eat pizza again for the first time in god knows how long. I love pizza and have sorely missed it (not supposed to eat dairy or tomatoes).

Should be a win win situation.

I hope this doesn't happen to me, my doctor's telling me I need to go on Humira or else it'll be surgery before too long :-\ I guess I really need to get on with that.

Update:
I went and saw the surgeon today.

Surgery is pretty straight forward, they cut and sew and then you are good. Have to spend 5 days in the hospital recovering (hopefully hopped up on stuff to make it fun :teehee ) and then recovery takes about a month at home. Then I have to come back in a year and they cut me open again and put a camera in to take a look at the stitched up intestine and make sure it's still all good.

They wanted to schedule me for a week from tomorrow, with Friday getting all prepped up for it, but they couldn't book a room at the hospital so I'm either going in on March 20th or 31st depending on if the 20th frees up at the hospital.

I'm a little nervous about the 5 day in-hospital recovery, but otherwise I'm ready to get through this and get healthy again. The surgeon had a fun stat sheet memorized which included the poll that 99.3% of 1 month post-operation patients wish they had done the operation sooner instead of living with Crohn's. Also using this method of aggressive medication post-surgery, the rate of Crohn's returning in patients in the last 3-5 years since they've been doing it is only 4%, which is pretty good assuming the aggressive medication isn't going to be messing you up.

On the plus side with the surgery not for a month I get to see Watchmen and play RE5 before I have to take the plunge. :D

Oh and the unfortunate bit is that he is not a Blue Cross provider and I am BC, which means even though the Hospital fees will be covered since I've met my deductible this year already, this is probably going to cost me like 10-15k out of my pocket to get healthy again. >_< Thankfully my grandpa left me a good chunk of money when he passed :\ , so I won't be on the street or anything.

My mom has Crohn's. She had the excision done 20 years ago when it was considered experimental. She has a nice, wide smiley-face scar on her stomach. Should be much less invasive now, I'd hope.

Her recovery was rough. She remained in hospital for about two weeks. Shortly after coming home, she had to return due to acute intestinal pain. The cause: flatulence. Good ol' gas. Be careful about that. Also, be careful about driving and any strenuous activity. Sudden reactions, or even your garden-variety stretch can pull stitches/staples if not careful.

Man, the memories of growing up with a sick parent (and her mother died when she was twelve of Crohn's...what a mind-fuck). Thankfully, she gets monthly B-12 injections. Hasn't been anywhere near prednisone in years. The flare-ups only happen every four months or so. Not anywhere near as bad as they used to be and usually stress/diet related (red meat can destroy her). I've asked her about remicade but her gastroenterologist doesn't seem to believe it would be effective for her.

Good to hear they've developed better and more effective post-op treatments. What are they going to be medicating you with?

I'm just finishing up my pre-surgery day prep of no eating and all that fun stuff and then I'm going to head to sleep in a few hours. I need to check in at the hospital at 5:15am so that means getting in the car at 4am tomorrow ^^; I don't mind it being so early though since I can't drink any water after midnight so the earlier I get hooked up to a machine the less I feel dehydrated.

Hopefully I'll post something in a few days through my iphone or hospital internet or something and it'll be funny like those drunk threads because I'll be high on crazy meds. I've never been on anything stronger than like vicadine and I'm sure they'll have me on stuff MUCH stronger for the first few days while the insides heal, so that could potentially be wacky fun.

Sort of standing. Was walking and standing last night, but I guess the anestia was still on effect. Now I'm soooooo swollen and they say Im on their stongest med that's stronger than Morphiuos and his judo.

I hear the surgery went as best it could. They made 3 cuts and took the most min amount out my belly button. They scoped the whole small intestine and everywhere else looked great and healthy, as did the large.

Doctor will be here in about 3 hours to check on me and explain. Glad it's all done and thank god for the iPhone 3g or I would be going crazy from boredooomn

Just chest hair and it's growing back in stubbly already.

But I got to talk to the main doctors and they let me know what was up. Should be out on Sat, and once this pain from the actual cut is gone, I'm supposed to feel perfect and be able to eat anything and do anything social. So 2-4 weeks. In the meantime I'll play ds and watch movies in bed once I'm discharged.

They took 23cm and now I can eat anything (although I can't really for now because the healing process requires no fiber, but otherwise I can eat cool stuff like pasta or pizza now or even chocolate or coke). When all the funny healing stuff is done I'm going to start on Remicade which are 3-4 hour IV infusions once every 6-8 weeks as a preventative measure to keep my crohn's from coming back. If I just take a day off to get an infusion 6 times a year and that means not taking any pills on a daily basis or limited diets or pain problems than I'm totally ok with that. Hopefully it doesn't cost 10k a year or something, but considering they are lengthy IV sessions in a hospital it's probably expensive.

Any how, in regards to the funny healing stuff I was doing ok with the cut being swollen and sore and the vicidin being my friend to keep me able to walk around and enjoy life until this past weekend when the cut started pouring out dark blood :( I called the surgeon and he said to go in on monday and not worry about the bleeding. So after bleeding on/off all weekend I went up to LA again to see the surgeon today and he said I had some sort of hemotosis or something where all the old blood had swollen up so he cut open the wound and drained the old blood out and is now letting the wound heal from the inside. This means he stuffed a wet guaze with disinfectent inside the open wound and then taped a piece of big guaze over it to cover it. Now a nurse is going to come to my house and remove the packed in wet guaze and pack in a new wet guaze twice a day until the wound has closed up completely. The doc said this will take about 3 weeks. He gave me lots of vicodin and said I can live normally and the pain should lessen each day as the wound heals up. He said it's not a big deal because it's just a deep skin wound and above the internal organs so it's not like the internal organs are going to fall out. Still he said it's going to look nasty so it's better if I let a nurse deal with it for at least the start.

The doctor's office had a really hard time finding a nurse service that could be available anytime soon. But eventually they found one that could start tomorrow morning. So the doc said not to worry about changing it tonight and just sleep on it and tomorrow change it out.

So yeah I'm sort of back to square 1 on the healing despite it being 2 weeks in, but hopefully this time things should heal smoothly and not swollen and sore and full of pain. I'll see how I'm doing after a few days of this and maybe if it's not big deal I'll be out and about driving and shopping and having fun later this week like I was just starting to do again on fri/sat before the whole bleeding ordeal. Otherwise I'll just sit around home and watch "obtained" video files and play DS and crappy Star Ocean.

Sorry to hear you've had complications, but at the same time your long term prognosis sounds good so that's a plus.

Then when it started bleeding on saturday he changed his mind ^^; Luckily the blood is old blood so I don't have to worry about blood loss which is what kinda made me nervous over the last few days when it was bleeding.

He still said this kind of stuff is fairly normal and happens to a lot of people after a surgery in the abdominal area so it's not a huge deal. It's not life threatening, it's not going to get infected especially now with the fresh bandaging daily, and so it'll just be a little inconvenient for a few weeks until it's healed. Then hopefully everything should be all good. Internally I'm feeling quite ok already after two weeks. Some soreness in the strip they reconnected, but that's about it.
