Will listen tomorrow at work. I can't wait to hear Frag.

I'd also like to hear your thoughts on the banking bullshit. Should be good for some lulz. Frag and Patel should be on that one too.

i try to stay away from the really heavy shit, like the economy and politics, just to keep the show relatively civilized.

Good to see this still going. The past 3 1/2 episodes have been very entertaining. Having the set up of informative, random topics with a bit of game talk really helps keep this from becoming too monotonous like some of those other podcasts.

I know it was an aside on the show, but I dislike Jack Benny. The humor and sitcom conventions are just too dated. This goes for all classic radio comedies, Life of Reily, the Bickersons, Amos and Andy, etc. Hate radio Westerns too. Mystery, horror, suspense, and sci-fi hold up. I used to listen to shows like X Minus One, Suspense, The Creeking Door, Tales from the Tomb, The Whistler, and The Shadow and thought they were still entertaining today

jack benny is my comfort radio (i believe i own every available show, and have listened to each episode several times) - i just like the cast

i like all those mystery/scifi shows you listed, but my absolute favorite horror otr show is Quiet, Please!

at 1:03-ish, is this Medal of Honor Frontline music? It's either Frontline or Allied assault, but I'm thinking Frontline.  I remember the Operation Market Garden level of Frontline also had amazing music.  I actually think they might have been the same.

thanks for the work guys

*I liked the talk about JRPGs, and I feel the same way that Doug does about the genre (i.e. there is something I like about them, but I typically can't take the whole pill). I think it's interesting that you think that the stories are nothing but copy and paste with animu thrown in, as I often think the same thing. I remember last year there was an interview on 1up in which a JRPG developer said that the distinguishing characteristic between Japanese and Western RPGs was an "intricate and complex story" or something to that effect (i'll look for the link). Does the fact that the Japanese think that their JRPG storylines are intricate and complex, while being viewed as copy-pasta by non-otaku in the west, have anything to due with the genre's perceived stagnation?

That snip is from the Video Games Live! performance, and I think it was a medley of MoH theme music.  I believe that snippet is from Frontline specifically, but the MoH games all use pieces of the same music (even Airborne).

Oh, that's awesome that the Outfit got some love. Offline co-op was great fun, but I remember hitting a certain mission in the campaign that was ungodly difficult. Fun, fun game though, kind of blends strategy and third person shooting. I need to rebuy it so I can finally beat the campaign.

yeah, the Outfit was a lot of fun local co-op.  It was actually one of the two games my roommate could play on the 360 and we used to play it a bunch way back when.

The quiz was fun, but you didn't have to repeat the book titles each time--bit of an energy sapper, especially since they're fairly long titles.

It was Michael Penn who sang "No Myth," btw.

Don't know why I kept calling him Andrew.  He's Sean Penn's brother.

Lyrics:

See, it was just too soon to tell
and looking for some parallel
can be an endless game
We, we said goodbye before hello
my secrets she will never know
and if I dig a hole to China
I'll catch the first junk to Soho
what if I were Romeo in black jeans
what if I was Heathcliff, it's no myth
maybe she's just looking for
someone to dance with

So I was unable to get the headphone out to work on my computer, so I listened via the internal speaker. Got a few laughs outta some people near by. Not the wisest of ideas though as a manager heard two words and was offended I would listen to such a podcast willingly. But soon after started listening in the cube next to me. You got some laughs out of them and they wanted to know who you were. The bit about live search made them lol (for obvious reasons)

I'm putting up a few "flier's" tomorrow to promote the borecast. Is there an official image you'd like used for such a flier? Making one with a bunch of cut out's with the url.

Got done with it a little while ago.  Man, the "Gaming Segment" is looooooong.  It's not necessarily a bad thing, but it might be worth considering who your audience is.  Previous episodes seemed a little broader in focus, and there aren't a lot of non-gamers that will sit through a lengthy gaming segment.  There aren't a lot of gamers that will sit through a lengthy WW2 games segment either, really.  I thought the guys made a good case for why that period is an interesting setting for games, but it didn't really do much to make me want to play any WW2 games.  I tend to think of the WW2 RTS as something for armory nuts and history buffs -- I don't know anything about howitzer cannons or tiger tanks or any of these units I hear discussed.  As for the WW2 FPS, well I guess it's just fatigue that makes people tired -- always the same weapon sets and locales again and again.

I think most people decide what to play based around just the general premise, and WW2 is a premise that has left some gamers bored (even Infinity Ward seems to have gotten bored with it).  Considering that the genre's two major franchises were getting annual sequels for many years at a time it isn't hard to explain the burnout.

I had previously asked that Doug explain "the allure of the JRPG", and he does it fairly well here, even if he seems to indicate that it's just some strange compulsion.  Best Buy has Persona 3 on clearance for $10 and I actually thought about buying it.  When Doug says something to the extent of "Well I really should get out of JPRGs, but if the only alternative is what Bioware has been putting out lately that might be a pretty bad idea" and everyone laughs in unison, that felt like the episode's most dorky "inside baseball" moment where I was totally clueless and strangely alienated.  Which is weird considering that the episode also contains a programming joke about infinitely recursive stacks that should have been far more "inside".

The discussion of "Shameful Late 90's Adult Contemporary That You Love" was pretty good.  If I pick up a new mike in the next week or so I might submit a couple of my favorites for consideration.

The Street Fighter 4 complaints are perhaps understandable, perhaps.  It's one thing not to have the reflexes for the timing, though you are pussies if you forgot the friggin' moves.  You guys really can't do a dragon punch anymore?  I don't feel like the game was really hyped up to be that casual-friendly.  Ultimately the only thing that makes fighters casual friendly is a large roster of very recognizable characters and easy, spammable moves (it's no coincidence how popular Smash Brothers and Marvel vs. Capcom were).  A casual gamer's interest will wane pretty quickly once he has already seen all the characters though, and it will inevitably be time to move on to something else.  I think you should ultimately be glad that they didn't turn the game into SSB or MvC2 though.

I'm sure that there will be an inevitable Wii version where all the moves are just performed with a limp-wristed waggle motion, and perhaps that will be a little easier on you.

the gaming segment ran longer because i figured this might be my only shot to talk about WWII games :lol

That's fine.  The Geekbox has become my favorite of the post-1Up podcasts, and it struggles with similar focus challenges.  They want to talk about all geek media, but it I think it becomes difficult to keep every listener interested when the discussion can shift wildly between comic books, videogames, movies, TV shows, etc.  They do a good job holding your interest though my eyes glaze over when they go on about a TV show (Burn Notice) or comics universe (DC) that I don't have any real interest in.  I think the problem is ultimately solved by not making any particular topic go on for too long or getting too inside with any of it.

Title: Re: Borecast Episode 4: Saving Private Ryu (with special guest Frag)
Post by: muckhole on March 05, 2009, 12:49:29 AM
I didn't take the Street Fighter complaints to be leveled so much at the game itself, but more as gamers who were once good at it finding it hard to recapture their groove, and thus the "magic". I haven't forgotten any of the moves, but there's just not as much passion for me to regain my (at one time, fairly competent) skills at playing Street Fighter as I once might have had.

We'll see, though. I've personally only had it for a couple of days, and admittedly haven't logged much time on it.

I'll be glad when this happens.  Makes online play a hell of lot better when all the distinguished mentally-challenged fellow-scrubs have dropped it and moved onto the next big release.  It's gotten so bad that now you have idiots making one-round fights with 30-second timers in ranked.

This reminds of the old days at my game store job when there would always be a few people that would come in and sell the latest fighting game and tell us that they "passed it."  This of course means that they undertook the incredibly arduous effort of going through the arcade mode on easy at one round, unlocking all the characters, and seeing all the endings.  And that was it.  "Why aren't these games longer?" one guy once said.

No sense playing a game where you'll always be up against a bunch of racist shitwits or guys who play the game 12 hours a day in their mom's basement.  If your friends aren't big fans of the game, I can see why some people don't bother with modern fighting games.
