Title: Suggest me pc games to play
Post by: Himu on March 09, 2009, 08:12:58 PM
Recently got a new computer. New as in..."new". It's used, old as shit, not that powerful. Still, at home I've got a pretty decent rig.

Has over 400 gigs, AMD Phenom 9150e Quad Core Processor 1.80 GHZ, 4 gigs of ram, Geforce 6150SE nforce 430.

I've been really liking what I've played of Civilization IV. I'm dling the demo for Age of Empires III and trying to find a demo for Sim City 4.

My tastes for pc games are strategy (turn based primarily, but if you can suggest me an RTS I may like I'll give it a shot), adventure, and rpg.

Time to catch up on old pc games. Titan Quest, The Witcher, and NWN2 are mos def at the top of the list.

I'm currently playing Stalker(fps-rpg) and Scratches(click and point horror). Both are pretty good.

I also wanted to try out Vampire Bloodlines, but the game won't run on Vista. Getting all kinds of error. Pretty gay.

That's why I hate PC gaming.

Aside from what's already been suggested:

-System Shock 2
-Deus Ex
-Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines
-Fallout 1 and 2
-Baldur's Gate 2
-Planescape Torment
-Galactic Civilizations 2
-King's Bounty

It works just fine in Vista for me. Do you have the latest fan-patch?

That's not the computer that's weak as shit.

The weak one is a laptop. The one at home is a desktop.

-System Shock 2 - Played and own it
-Deus Ex - Played and own it
-Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines - What's this?
-Fallout 1 and 2 - Played and own them, well, I've played 1 but not much of 2.
-Baldur's Gate 2 - Played and own it with the expansion.
-Planescape Torment - Played and own it
-Galactic Civilizations 2 - What's this?
-King's Bounty - What's this?

I'm a nub when it comes to 2000's pc gaming in general. I think I've played very few pc titles from this decade. The few that I have played being Still Life, Longest Journey, Civ IV, Deus Ex, and a few other titles including mmorpgs.

I'd like to emphasize I want to concentrate strictly on 2000's pc gaming for now.

-Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines - What's this?

It's a Source-based first-person RPG made by a lot of the same guys behind the first two Fallout game, Baldur's Gate, and Icewind Dale. It's got its flaws, but is one of the best PC RPGs of this decade thanks to great atmosphere, great writing, and some great RPGing for the first two-thirds of the game. After that it starts to fall apart. Definitely worth playing, just make sure to get the latest official patches and reputable fan-patch.

-Galactic Civilizations 2 - What's this?

Turn-based civilization builder set in space. Borrows heavily from Sid Meier's Civilization series.

Quote
-King's Bounty - What's this?

Turn-based strategy RPG in the vein of Heroes of Might and Magic.

Scratches is pretty much the best adventure game this decade; just ask demi, he knows. The Lost Crown is pretty awesome too, it's at least the best one in the past year.

King's Bounty is like 1/2 RPG, 1/2 turn-based strategy, like the Heroes of Might & Magic series. It's awesome, you should play it too.

Is Scratches point and click?

Yes. Don't let the first-person perspective throw you off, it's just a straight up, old-school adventure game.

I think III, IV, and V all were. Also there was a spinoff, Myst Uru. I'm not really a Myst fan though. I played the first one, a little bit of Uru, and a demo of V. That was enough for me.

Great thread himu.  I'm actually just getting back into PC gaming again too, now that I got a new vidcard.  There's so many good PC games released since a lot of us were out of the loop with outdated hardware that it feels overwhelming.  Especially because so many good PC games are HUGE and deep (at least rpg/strategy/sim games).

Scratches is pretty much the best adventure game this decade; just ask demi, he knows. The Lost Crown is pretty awesome too, it's at least the best one in the past year.

Himuro, buy a decent card for that and let the good times roll. I just bought a PC myself and I'm having a lot of fun discovering these games that I couldn't play on my shitrig or the consoles.

The adventure gaming community was in quite a tizzy over that review at the time, let me tell you. It's was equivalent to the effect of IGN giving God Hand a 3.0 to Nihonphiles.

Play the Neverhood for shits and giggles.

I tried to play this a few years ago and couldn't finish it.  So tonight I will try to play this again although I have no idea where I am with my save since the game HAS NO NARRATIVE >_<

I love the art/music, but the puzzles are a little out there for me and I never have any idea what the game is about.

Well I found where I am going by the faq.  I am in "the middle" right after the wall maze.  Man I remember that wall maze and how it killed my will to continue to play the game :(

Anyone here with a Nvidia card going TV-out to a widescreen HDTV know how to output in 4:3 resolutions?

When I load Neverhood it's stretched to widescreen, as is any 4:3 program.  I want to play it in a 4:3 resolution with black bars on the side.

i know, that's a weak integrated graphics card, you're not gonna run the witcher on it for sure

i just use the widescreen settings on my tv

check your nvidia control panel and see if you've got the option to disable display scaling

himu go here:

and use their system requirements check if you have a question about what games you can run

i find they're a bit more accurate than the system requirements lab check

Alright, finished Neverhood.  Was cute and nice art/music.  The backtracking was ughhhhh though, so much of it, especially having to redo puzzles each time and not being able to skip/fast-forward the fps walking.  It didn't help that I didn't have the hints I wrote down two years ago on me, so I had to go find them again.  Also was missing a disc at the end so had to go through every building to find that.  But the game is 14 years old, so oh well.  It was kind of nostalgic playing a game that forced you to write down puzzle clues.

How was Skullmonkeys?

Best parts were the giant robot vs. beast battle and the line after the final boss, "you know, I never really got that guy"  :lol.  Was a bit weird that there was no final boss puzzle and it just ended by getting to the final room.

Anyone here with a Nvidia card going TV-out to a widescreen HDTV know how to output in 4:3 resolutions?

When I load Neverhood it's stretched to widescreen, as is any 4:3 program.  I want to play it in a 4:3 resolution with black bars on the side.

My TV can't squish 16:9 pictures into 4:3.  It can only stretch 4:3 -> 16:9.  I looked around online and supposedly there is an option in the nvidia control panel called something like flat panel display adjustment.  Except since I'm doing component out to my CRT HDTV that doesn't exist.

But I found a temp solution.  If I just tell it to output in 480p instead of 720p to my TV it sends a 4:3 480p signal.  This means for games that are old enough to be 640x480 or less I can play them in their original aspect ration (like Neverhood).  But in the future if I ever want to play a more modern game that just isn't widescreen I'm gonna be stuck playing it on my crappy old LCD.
