This was the first dvd I ever bought and besides that, the movie is special to me already.
But man this is the first time watching in almost a decade. I forgot how good this movie is. It basically summarizes EVERY THING AWESOME about 80's anime in just an hour and some minutes.
This movie has so many awesome scenes it is ridiculous.
The opening - "Alright, let's hit it!"

MILK?!

TETSU MAKES A CAPE AND FUCKS SHIT UP

Unfortunately I can't find other awesome scenes on youtube because people are stupid, but this movie is so action-packed, and the only boring part is at the end when there's a bunch of talking.
This movie has:
- explosions
- butt kicking
- chicks getting sexually assaulted
- riots
- people getting shot up
- mother fuckers getting MURKED
- amazing action scenes
- cyberpunk
- great music
- KANEDA! TETSUO!
:bow :bow 80'S ANIME :bow2 :bow2

Never seen it.
-
tetsuoooooooooooooo
-
It's been a few years since I've seen it, I'm definitely going to have to bust it out again sometime.
-
I think Akira is the most technically impressive bit of 2D animation. Probably won't ever see anything like it again.
-
brb watching Clannad.

Studio Ghibli has done some great work with hand-drawn animation, but it's not as flashy as Akira.
-
The animation in Akira makes my pants wet.
-
I bought the dvd when it first came out, but could never get over the fact that they had a new dub with new voice actors.
-
I would pay for the new dub/old dub to be on the same dvd.
-

It's definitely top-tier as far as 2D animation goes. It's flashy, slick, and just cool to watch. I'd put Ghost in the Shell and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust up there as well.
-
This was my first purchased anime (on vhs!) ever.

That's why you watch it with subs. :wag
-
Akira has a not-bad dub though. Honestly, I like the newer dub, anyway -- it's a bit less silly and if I remember correctly the translation was corrected and it's (slightly) more coherent.

Yeah, I'm sure if I saw the two back to back for the first time ever I might like the newer one better, but since I'd been watching the original one for like 8 years or whatever I was kind of nostalgically attached to it.
-
2001 version is the definitive version. New dub is better than the old dub, was digitally remastered too.
-
Uh
if you're getting a dvdrip, typically they come with Japanese voices and subs along with dubs.
Get cccp. http://www.cccp-project.net/
-
there is a blu ray rip now.
http://www.thoranime.org/?p=782
no dub though.
-
I want the dvd version visually with the old DUB.
Someone (here I think) told me this was available on laserdisc and there was a torrent for it. I have the VHS and the 2001 Tin Collector edition, so I don't mind downloading the definitive edition. I couldn't find it though (I downloaded Akira four different times, all had the new Dub :lol)
The main problem is not the dialogue but the voices. If they had kept the original actors and had them read the new script that would have been better, the script is obviously superior in the new dub. The kid in the floating wheelchair isn't nearly as creepy in the new dub, and all of that goes back to his voice actor.
-
Apparently they released a new version in 2004 with both the new and old dub. But Pioneer's dead so...
-
Old dub is WAAAAAAAAY better.
Colonel is WAAAAAAAAAY better.
Tetsuo is WAAAAAAAAAAY better.
Kaneda is Cam Clarke. Nuff said.
-
which dub has them calling Kaneda Canada exactly like the country? that's the one I have on VHS that I taped off the TV. I really do need to get the blu-ray tho.
-
I dunno.
In the superior older dub, it's pronounced "CAH-NEY-DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH."
-

Oh yeah, the Colonel is a total pussy in the new dub. It's all fucked up :'(
-
Old dub has one of my favorite movie lines ever. Some politician is telling the Colonel to watch his ass, be more polite, that there are dudes gunning for his job. He responds, "they don't teach tact at the academy." DAMN STRAIGHT THEY DON'T.
-
I dunno.
In the superior older dub, it's pronounced "CAH-NEY-DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH."
I checked out a comparison of the two on youtube and I'm pretty sure the one I have on VHS is the old one. The new one doesn't sound that bad though.
ok, Tetsuo sounds pretty bad.

That's right.
Lest we forget, original Akira dub produced one of the first internet memes. Shit I remember reading TETSUOOOOOOOOOOO jokes in Wizard Goddamn Magazine.
-
Finally, psychic baby Godfather sounds so much better in the old dub. I think the voice actor was literally trying to do a 10 year old Brando. Amazing.
-
psychic baby godfather? You mean the guy in the wheelchair?
-
Yeah.
-
i hate the little girl
-

She was like the first Little Sister.

Yeah that's what I said. His whole character is ruined in the new dub, mainly because of the voice actor.
'Tetsuo, you know we must return. You know we don't belong here.'
'Kyoko!'
I can still hear that motherfucker.
-
Do you understand my avatar now?
-
I wonder if that South Park episode (Trapper Keeper) and bit where Cartman turns into that tentacle monster was inspired by Akira.
Do you understand my avatar now?
It has total different meaning after watching the movie, like my mind... is blown away.
You wonder? It wasn't obvious after you saw the movie?
-
Maybe it was inspired by...
...The Elephant Man?
-
I can't remember much of the original dub, but if I remember correctly the re-release corrected some of the poor editing decisions made in the original North Am. release, and the story flowed a bit better/made more sense.
-
wait there's a new dub WITHOUT Cam Clarke? fuck that
-
Can't wait for Gary Whitta to make this even worse than it already was.

I had to watch three time to realize that seeing stuff 'slode was the point.

"Neo-Manhattan" itself makes the whole thing unappealing to me. Still need to buy Akira on BD.
-
He's ruining it by writing a live action Akira.
-
youse just all jealous.
-
Is there just a decent rip of the Streamline dub floating around? That is Akira to me, not the newer (more sensical) dub, and not the original Japanese dialogue version. I need Leonardo as Kaneda!
-
It just depends on what you 'grew up on.' Like Lyte, Akira isn't the same to me without the original dub. The voices, the strange translation, it's all part of the package. However, to a newcomer the new dub actually does flesh out the story a lot better and makes more sense to someone who hasn't read the anime.
Lyte, I was told there are rips of the laserdisc out there with the original dub, however after downloading Akira probably 10 times I was unable to find it. I'd very much like a link to the original dub, all I've got is my old VHS. I own the movie on DVD and will own it on Bluray at some point, but given the opportunity I'd always watch the VHS just due to the dub.
-
youse just all jealous.
Jealous of a former editor for a PC magazine who stole Fallout's story and just threw in a black man with a sword? Yep, totally jealous.

Gary Whitta wrote for PC Gamer and did the screenplay for Book of Eli.

Why is he doing that?
Graphically, Akira is perfect.
-
Because he's the Chris Kohler of movies. A fat distinguished mentally-challenged fellow who's in love with Japan and thinks they can do no wrong.
-
I bet they'll make it PG-13
smh
-
Because somebody is paying him to do it nerds.
-
I think I'm dreading the Cowboy Bebop adaptation even more than I am Gary Whitta's Akira Neo-Manhattan phantomness.
-

That's because of those two, Cowboy Bebop is more likely to happen by far.
-
Was the original dub that much better than the JP voices? I found the latter pretty damn good.
A lot of it (or maybe all of it) is just due to nostalgia. The Streamline dub is the first version of Akira I saw back in '89-'90 and had a big influence on me as a kid, leading me to get into all that manga/anime stuff (which back then was just awesome; quality has a taken a nosedive this decade) in the first place.
Also since this dub was done loooooong before the whole anime craze came about, none of the cliche stupid voice acting crap is there.
-

I bet he goes to work with a chubby. So much power to destroy what people hold dear must be amazing.
-
Oddly enough, after eons of no playback on random shuffle, the AKIRA soundtrack has been on heavy rotation, coincidentally.
-
Apparently the live-action Akira is now dead:
Good news or bad? That's up to you. It was only a year ago when it was officially announced that Warner Brothers and Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way were developing a live-action version of the anime Akira with first-time Irish director Ruairi Robinson. So now its been 15 months and we haven't heard much - but that's because its been struggling internally at the studio. Bloody Disgusting now confirms via "two separate sources" that the project is "dead as a doornail." Robinson is apparently also off of the project. When it was announced last year, the plan was to actually have shot and ready to debut in theaters this summer.
The studio fought for the rights in a bidding war in early 2008, as they had let go of them a few years earlier. The project was being spearheaded by Warner Bros. exec Greg Silverman, who previously brought 300 and Batman Begins to the studio. It was described as "Blade Runner meets City of God" which was more than enough to make me excited. Fans were in an uproar, however, because they were going to move the setting from Tokyo to what was being called "New Manhattan," a new metropolis that was rebuilt after being destroyed 31 years ago. I even heard that Zack Snyder was approached to direct (after 300) but declined.

I bet when The Watchmen tanked, it put the kibosh on Akira. Thanks Zack Snyder. (http://www.evilbore.com/forum/Themes/dilbermc/images/post/thumbup.gif)

Akira, couldn't suffer through it. Ugly, ancient, boring.

Yeah...I don't really see the connection.

Yeah...I don't really see the connection.
:(
Well I don't like it. I don't like GITS2 as well. It was overdone.
That movie has the most fucking unbelievable amount of quoting ever. It seems like every two sentences somebody quotes someone else and it's fucking unbearable. It looks awesome though, at least.
-
The real rumor in hollywood is that Gary Whittas script was just absolute tripe and the producers didn't want to pay someone else to do another draft. :smug
-
Yeah, laugh it up sweater-boy.
-
Why does there have to be a new script anyway?
Isn't there already a script?
-
No, they were moving the city to New York.
-
Yeah...I don't really see the connection.

I liked that part of it because I feel like that's how people would interact with each other if their brains were directly connected to the sum total of human knowledge 24/7.

If they were directly connected, they wouldn't have stupid fucking conversations involving quotations 24/7, they would just get it. It's like if we all had a philosophical conversation and then constantly googled quotations and shit to support our arguments.
-
No, they were moving the city to New York.
They're changing the setting of Akira to New York? So does this mean it's going to be a bunch of caucasian actors filling the roles (and maybe like one rapper, you know, for the street cred)? It's not like I was expecting Asian actors anyway, since there's like three of them in Hollywood and none of them are Japanese (lol), but damn! I hope they're not using names like "Kaneda" and "Tetsuo" then. :P
-
I think they were going to change Tetsuo to Travis.
TRAAAAAVIIIIIIISSS!
:lol
-
And Kaneda to Kenny KENNNNNNNNNNNNYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
-
Saw it in the theatre back in the day. Absolutely stunning

As awesome as Akira still is today, I could only imagine how awesome it would be to have seen in the theater as kid.

Akira sucks, most overhype shit ever by the animefags.
