"It didn't involve any hacking or direct security flaws -- but the elections officials made use of the confusing user interface and process of the e-voting machines to trick voters into leaving before their votes had been cast. That's because there's a "vote" button, that some people (silly them!) assumed meant they actually voted. Nope. It turns out that just gets you to a page to review your vote and then confirm it. However, these elections officials told people that once they hit vote they had voted -- and were then able to go in and change the actual votes."

Apparently they did this to keep themselves in power and their friends. At least they were caught.

This is why they need paper records of the votes.  It's surprising that they even found out about t his.

also, a simple voting interface where clicking vote actually votes instead of going to a confirm your vote page where u can change ur votes, with maybe a printout of your votes for record keeping.

I can give you some background on Clay County that will make this have more meaning. I live in London which in the county over from Clay County.

Basically, Clay County is the most poverty stricken county in Kentucky. A lot of poor counties are devastated by the coal companies that still operate in most of Appalachia. Clay County used to have a coal mining operation (mountaintop removal) that ended, and they "reclaimed" the land by putting a federal prison in Manchester, the county seat. Without the coal company, the poor county got poorer and unemployment skyrocketed.

The coal company always tried to do corrupt shit behind the scenes to get their politicians in office. The fact that some of this was actually exposed (although after the coal company left) is probably a step in the right direction for the county and should be seen as a good thing.

The coal company pissed on Manchester and so did its leaders. There's a prison, a Wal-Mart, a few fast food joints, and that's it. Other than that, Manchester is a complete slum with 95% of downtown boarded up. It looks like a big gaping hole that the coal company fucked for all its worth.

Knowing this is sarcasm, the media will probably start talking about how all of fucking Kentucky is stupid and poor and can't go to school when in reality our school systems are either fucked over by coal and politicians as well or (in my case) the school decides to spend way more money into making a high school football/basketball program that is as prestigious as the University of Kentucky basketball team or the Notre Dame football team.

A lot of what makes Kentucky suck isn't necessarily the poor redneck people. It's the fact that the rich smart Republican people have invented ways to continually fuck over the state to make more money through rooting the state in religion, which in my opinion makes people very against the idea of speaking out against the government.

One more quick story involving Clay County: I went to North Laurel High School, and after I graduated, the North Laurel football team played the Clay County football team. The student section at North dressed up like fucking hillbillies and poor coal miners to make fun of Clay County. There's a local author named Silas House who saw this and wrote a large scathing column about this event in the local newspaper, mainly speaking out against the kids for all of the reasons I posted above. All of the kids' rich conservative parent then each wrote large scathing columns that basically ostracized this famous author in his own hometown, saying it was nothing more than a childish prank. North Laurel now does this on a yearly basis. These are the same kids that gave me and tehjaybo shit in high school, so we all know they were truly douchebags, but not to Laurel County.

God, fucking Kentucky pisses me off.

I have to confirm my vote here in PA, too. It's never fooled me. Maybe it's because I'm not an idiot?

I've been to Manchester. It's most definitely a place where the bigass coal companies have crapped on it. Here in WHIRLIN STERLIN, the town has lot of factories, stores, and places of employment, but it is by no means rich. Manchester is about as desperate a place for jobs as Floyd County. There's a lot of crooked politicians in this state for sure.
