Title: To Prevent More Patel Tears
Post by: Eric P on March 30, 2009, 07:55:20 PM
Stuff I like recently: (everyone please join in).

if you want to "try" these out, you can usually google search "artist album site:mediafire.com" and turn something up.  Or search their myspace pages.

Acid Fascists- banging garage rock from the uk.  purports to be alternate reality Charles Manson band.  You can download their album free of charge for the next two days from the band itself:  http://www.mediafire.com/?ycznxmjhmbk

Fake Blood - Electro/House/Figit DJ.  Just did one of the best Essential Mixes for this year.
http://deepgoa.wordpress.com/2009/03/14/fake-blood-essential-mix-bbc-radio-1-14032009/

in dance music terms, this is so old your grandfather would be dancing to it.

Glomag - 8 Bit artist just did a bunch of Joy Division covers and it's awesome. http://www.sendspace.com/file/eqgg6s

8-bit pocket calculator cover

O Pioneers - Neon Creeps!!!  This appeals to me and i can't really say why.  It's just good solid rock with some horrible song titles.  you can get this from a completely donation based record label online
http://www.quoteunquoterecords.com/albums.htm

sounds like Against Me! a bit with this song

Baroness- The Red Album, out since 2007 i just found them thanks to a resurgence in my interest in metal.  This is a fucking incredible album and reminds me a lot of the creativity the "alternative" scene in the early 90s was putting out with a heavy guitar sound.

The Coathangers - girl noise punk band.  New album coming out in April which may place them at the forefront of hipster consciousness.  check them out now while they're still cool.

teengirl fantasy - two Oberlin students make electronic music which is dance aware but not slavishly beholden to the constraints of dance music.  check out the CDR self release they did, OR go to their myspace and check out azzclaps.

tombs - brooklyn metal/doomgaze band.  wall of sound and despair.  This isn't what you'd expect when you hear the term  "metal"

wolves in the throne room - ambient black metal.

N.A.S.A. - dance music.  good fun stuff with interesting "collaborations" (like odb)

digital leather - one guy with some dark, dark, dark synthpop.  for fans of stuff like nin, but don't expect it to be as "pretty"  quite raw

dj donna summer- nothing i say will really do this guy justice.  probably nsfw or white booties
http://www.xlr8r.com/podcast/2008/05/exclusive-mix-dj-donna-summer

Duffy - like female white soul vocalists?  get her

Hot Lava - Fun pop from Richmond Va.  check their myspace

k'naan - hip hop from somalia via canada.

math the band - 3 fun spazzes from philly with instruments.  albums are NOTHING like the insane live shows.

nothing on youtube really captures what they're like live.

matt and kim - you probably already know them and may even hate them by now

and now i'm going home.  so i will leave off here

anyone else?

Fake Blood played a few parties down at WMC this year, recognize the name but haven't ever heard them before. Not too big on the fidget type stuff but I'll check out their EM.

http://sludgeswamp.blogspot.com/

start from the top.

nsfwife images.  find their atom feed and go from that.  lots of fascinating new bands there.  though they focus more on the doom/sludge/swamp aspect of things.  so expect more like Baroness and Black Sabbath and less like Krallice (though you'd probably like them too, but they're a bit too epic for my tastes)

to me it sounds like you like energy and minor chords.

try some Death Set

some Japanther

and for the hip hop lover in you, some Ninjasonik

and then Death Set and Ninjasonik combine to make unhip white people feel uncomfortable

i have 0 issue with ten minute long songs, but my complaint is when  they don't do anything to justify their length, such as Krallice

(a short example but their album is mostly long songs which don't do much beyond show off technical chops)

I totally agree. Plus, that Mastodon song is like 3 songs in one.

Of the stuff posted, I liked N.A.S.A. and Matt and Kim.  I will probably try and grab more stuff later.  My musical tastes are all over the place, though.

In the 3rd Strongbad game where you have to make a kickass album cover, I think the album cover might have been based off this?  It's a hot girl on a car with a sword posed to strike, except in the Strongbad one the car is on fire and there is a giant t-rex ready to fight her.

1. They're from the Philippines. I only heard them by chance when they played Second Trace on KEXP while I was driving home over the Summer. I was pimping them heavy over the Summer, but no one listened, apparently.
2. Their Cut the World EP doesn't have a US distributor. It's apparently sold out and out of print now.

Oceansize :bow2.
They been going for ten years, they have three albums: Effloresce, Everyon Into Position and Frames. I recommend listening to them in that order. My favourites are the 1st and 3rd albums.

I've been digging The Faint a lot lately. Kinda funny, because I've never been big on the new-wave/dance scene. Ignore the terrible videos.
